I normally dont have time to write reviews, but this one needs to have one. I purchased this sweater in the grey color. It fits perfectly, so warm and snuggly. I wanted to purchase another color, but the small was gone. I hope LL Bean comes back with more colors in the fall or sometime soon. I LOVED it! I had so many compliments and very well made! I hope to enjoy this for many years to come. Thank you LL BEAN!

The best. Very pricey but classic and cozy. Soft, hibernating feeling for cold winter days! And warm! The best! Hope it lasts for years and years!

Christmas present to myself. Always wanted this type of sweater and the cream color was so pretty and it was the last in my size (XL) so I purchased it. It looks pretty and is true to size for me. I purchased at the store and there was no smell as some reviewers stated. When I got to cashier to pay for it, not only did cashier comment on how pretty it was but also another customer being checked out.
My only disappointment is that since it is a soft, loose-knit wool, it is not as warm as I thought it would be and I don't think I will wear it as "casually" or as "often" as I initially thought. I agree with other reviews that older similar sweaters were probably heavier and could probably withstand more abuse. This is a classic look, yet very "pretty" sweater and I will wear it selectively.
It fits well and is comfortable. I, also, had to roll back bottom of sleeve and it looks fine....just hope it doesn't stretch.

Rated 4 out of 5 by LoneWriter Would love a denser knit, but it's still a beauty
This review is for this year's and last year's 1912 Heritage Fisherman's Sweater, both of which are knit in mid-weight, soft, stretchy wool. The yarn is looser and thinner than Bean's Norwegian sweaters and not as dense, heavy, warm or wind resistant as the women's Fisherman crewneck sold 15-20 years ago, which I still wear every year.
I do love this cardigan, but I agree it has an odd fit. Generous in the bodice with long, tight sleeves and a tight, banded hem that pulls to the back when left unbuttoned. I generally wear my cardigans buttoned, so I don't mind the hem. My only complaint is the rank, lanolin smell, which does dissipate over time, but knocked me flat the first time I took the sweater out of the bag. I just keep reminding myself the oils are what give the yarn its water resistance, but ick.
Stinky or not, I was happy to see the return of the ladies Fisherman cardigan this fall, as I was crushed when it sold out last year before I even knew it existed. Late winter, I was lucky to snag one in "Cream" (if you take your cream which a whisper of mustard and pea soup), and this year I bought the Heather Gray as soon as it became available?a perfect color! The Gray has already sold out, and the Cream is very nearly out, unless you wear size S.
The 1912 Heritage Fisherman's Sweater is a "dress" sweater, ideally suited for work or church or social engagements ... or if you just want to look nice at home. I cannot wear this cardigan as a jacket over other layers the way I can with my Norwegian cardi, but it's still a beauty of a sweater, and worth the investment (especially if you have coupons!).

This is a lovely, classic wool cabled cardigan. I've purchased authentic Irish wool cardigan sweaters several times over the decades, from Irish import shops in the Seattle area. Those earlier versions were a heavier and harder finished wool, and took a lot of abuse over a long time. This 1912 Heritage Fisherman's sweater is a soft wool, and I'd call it a medium weight. The sleeves run a bit long, but the cuffs can be turned back. If you hand wash the sweater, you can block it while air drying it so the sleeves are wider and shorter. I normally take a medium in LL Bean tops, but I ordered a LARGE, and am pleased with the easy but not sloppy fit. (5' 1", 129#.) This is a lovely sweater but I'm saving it for dressier occasions. I would NOT recommend it as a coat substitute or for horse-back riding (which is how I used my older Irish wool sweaters).

I ordered the gray. Lovely sweater, soft and warm, cozy, quality. Unfortunately it was just scratchy enough to require a return. The wool yarn in this sweater is a beautiful natural fiber. If you aren't ultra wool sensitive, you should give it a try. This is a cardigan I wish I could wear.

Rated 3 out of 5 by pixy Sleeves too Long
I decided to get a small after reading the reviews, since people were mentioning that the sweater was tight at the bottom. This is true but I like the way that part fits. That being said, I found that the sleeves are very, very long------------4-5 inches too long and very bulky sideways as well. Weird. I can turn up the cuffs, but then it gets rather lumpy on the cuffs. I like the colour a lot, even though other people do not. Now I am debating whether or not to return it and get the XS. It is hard to know because it does fit nicely in the body and maybe the XS will be a bit too small?? Anyway, when I look at the picture here with the girl modelling it, the sleeves are just right on her and they are not so wide or too long. For the price, the fit of this item should be better. The wool and the construction is very good. The button holes are a bit of an issue as mentioned already by another reviewer.

Finally the Women's fishermans sweaters have arrived. This is the kind of sweater that you really always wanted but just never got, I love sweaters & have a large collection from Bean. Having read the reviews before ordering, I had to order a medium & a large. Am glad I did as the grey heather sold out completely. Have to say.... the sweater is quite beautiful...but it does have a few quirks....Yes you really can see there are no defined buttonholes...but isn't that the look of a real knitted sweater!... and bigger quirk and this was the same on the two different sweater sizes I had ordered, is the facing ( where the buttons & buttonholes are).. doesn't match up to the body of the sweater...It is shorter than the rest of the sweater!.... Guess this is to make it look like it was made by a distant relative in Ireland... ie, handmade. Don't know about the natural color being orange but the grey is just wonderful...Comfortable....Soft...and I'd say true to size. The large just was too, too big. I usually wear a medium in Bean sweaters. And as for the elastic at the bottom of the sweater...it was fine for me but don't you think that that will stretch out a bit...Only giving 4 stars because of the quirks... Yes it is quite expensive....but I think it is worth it...And yet another great garment from llbean!

Rated 3 out of 5 by Midwesterner216 Soft and warm but really unattractive color
I have to agree with the other reviews criticizing the color of this sweater. It's awful. It has this mustardy tinge. I've never seen this color on anything before. It looks like it's under hideous light, but you move it to another room and it stays ugly. I'm keeping it, though, because it's warm and lush. I've never felt wool so soft. I'll just never be wearing it in public.
