Rated 4 out of 5 by CaliforniaMan Classic Field Watch - Gold Plated - is a good deal
This is the third gold plated field watch that I've owned. They're rugged and they stand up to abuse. I've taken mine on trips to Cambodia and Laos and Thailand where the humidity and the dirt can create real problems with time pieces. They have kept good time, the strap lasts, and I have no complaints.
But, as with any device that is heavily used, my field watches have had some problems. The biggest problem has been when time came to replace the battery. Eventually, the watches after four or five or six years won't survive a jeweler's battery swap. Something during the process shorts out, and the watch will need to be replaced. This has now happened with two of them. (I'm on my third.) You could say that the watch was faulty in design, but I don't think that's an accurate statement. Regardless, each time it's failed, LL Bean has provided me with a replacement. So I can't complain. It's a good watch! Not a Rollex, but not a Timex either. I would happily recommend this watch to anyone.

Rated 2 out of 5 by SuperDave748 Small hands
Follow up to my previous review. I bought the black face classic and I just noticed that the hands are the same as the white face with the black outline on the hands. This makes the hands appear smaller than they actually are on the black face. Not at all like the hands in the picture for the black face version. Too bad, I really liked the watch.

The hands are very small and difficult to see...not the same size as displayed in the picture. I love the looks and it fits well on my wrist, but it's going back tomorrow...very disappointing!

Rated 5 out of 5 by LEWINPA NOTHING WRONG WITH THE WATCH
I got a laugh out of the folks that complained about the hand size and the band. I am 75 years old and have no trouble seeing the hands without glasses. The watch is great in every way. I have been buying items from L. L. Bean since 1953 and have never got a bad item yet. I ordered the watch late Wednesday night, got an email that it was shipped yesterday, Thursday, and the UPS man dropped the watch off around noon today, Friday. Not even three days to delivery from Maine to Pennsylvania and free shipping too. When I went on the computer a short time later there was a message from L. L. Bean that my package was delivered. Great folks at L.L. Bean. Too bad other companies don?t work like them.

Rated 3 out of 5 by TexasLarry Could be great with wider hands
I got this field watch for Christmas, to replace a LL Bean Field Watch I had for more than 10 years. Sadly, the hands on this new version have been on a diet and as a result it is way harder to read than my old one. I hate this, as I loved my old field watch and this one just makes me sad. I guess I'll keep it and wear it and just take more time to focus in the dial when I read it. It keeps very good time, but the hands ruin the watch for me.
I love LL Bean, and I can't figure out why they cheapened this great watch by making the hands so darned skinny.

Rated 4 out of 5 by CasualMichiganWalker A correction to my previous review
In my review dated 3/12/2014, I said the LL Bean Vintage Field Watch is considerably larger than the Classic Field Watch. This statement is incorrect. They are very close in size. The Classic is 1-7/16" and the Vintage is 1-8/16". These measurements include the crown.

Rated 4 out of 5 by CasualMichiganWalker Only one flaw
I have two Men's Classic Field Watches, one with a navy blue dial and gold plated case (purchased a year ago), and one with a green dial and stainless steel case (purchased recently). Both watches are very attractive, largely because of the colored sunray dials. I would like LL Bean to make this watch with a red sunray dial, white numerals and a dark black case. The watch's only flaw is that the hands are too narrow, making them hard to see at times. To improve this, they would have to widen the hands just a little. The watch case is about 36 mm wide, which might be too small for the tastes of some people. They might consider Bean's "Vintage" Field Watch, which appears to be about 40 mm. My routine of a desk job and taking walks in the neighborhood is not very hard on my watches. For this non-rigorous routine, the watches have performed well.

Rated 3 out of 5 by heartache Minute Hour Hands
I bought this to replace my field watch that died even after putting in a battery, it served me many, many years. So I bought this new one, in the photo the minute and hour hands are quite visible, but the one I received are hard to see, especially the minute hand. Oh you can not see the hands in the dark at all.
So to recomend it, if you have really good eyes Yes, but otherwise no just because of the hands. But it sure is a fine looking time piece. So I'll be stopping by the store to see what's up.

by Kellan Perfect Size
Being a smaller guy at 5 feet 8 and 1/2 inches tall and weighing around 150 pounds I have to be careful with my watch size. The watches that are popular lately are HUGE and do not fit me at all. This LL Bean watch is the closest I've found in years that fits me, looks manly without looking over-sized and is obviously built to last. I still wear it on the smallest hole in the band but it looks great. I don't want to give the wrong impression though: this is NOT a small watch. It's a NORMAL sized watch for a man, which has gotten harder to find recently. It looks classic. I got the green face (because it was marked down) and I couldn't be happier with it. It's a darker green, like a spruce green, and is slightly iridescent because of the material the face is made of. Thank you LL Bean, I am VERY happy with this watch.
