by KSU1988 Men's Classic Field Watch, Stainless Steel
My classic field watch from 2004 stopped working around the 4th battery change. LLB sent a replacement in 2 days and I've been happy with it so far. It has gained about 5 seconds in 6 weeks.
It is larger all around especially in thickness but I didn't measure the old one before sending it in. Based on a case diameter of 36mm it would fall into the average size category for a men's watch. I have a very small wrist btw 6.75" and 7" for a 5'11'' 180 lb male and I wouldn't consider the watch to be overly large. Many of the new watches take up the entire width of the wrist.
I do feel the hour/minute hands could be wider however I can still see them with my 49 yo eyes. I replaced the leather strap with a nylon one that was included with the 2004 model that I had never used. It fit great but was not easy popping out the spring bars.
Here are my measured dimensions for this watch and I have included a picture of the 2004 model:
Case thickness: 9mm
Case Diameter(8 to 2): 36mm
Case Diameter w/crown: 40mm
Very Top to Very Bottom: 45mm
Band Widest Point: 17mm
Band Tapers to: 15mm

I have an L. L. Bean Field Watch that I bought in the 1990s which is somewhat the worse for wear, and I decided that it was time to replace it. None of the current models are identical, but this one had the most similar design, so I bought one.
I was disappointed to find that it is much bulkier and heavier than the old design. The diameter is the same, but it seems to be between 2 and 3 mm thicker. The new watch weighs 45 grams as against the 33 of the old model--an increase of more than a third in weight.
I would not describe my old L. L. Bean Field Watch as either thin or light, but this new one is of a positively ungainly thickness and weight. On the basis of my brief experience with it (I am returning it for a refund), I would say that this is not a watch that you will wear easily on your wrist or fit easily under the cuff of your shirt. It is certainly solidly made: I can say that much for it.

I love this watch. I love doing business with LL Bean, The first field watch I owned was stolen when I left it out at work. The second one lasted two years or so, then stopped. I sent it back for repair and they replaced it! I sent it back this time for the battery change. Can't beat the price, can't beat the service. Don't pay more to have a more expensive job done by whatever high school kid is in the "batteries changed" kiosk at the mall. Stick with LLBean.

When I read the reviews I have to smile. This is the "Classic Field Watch" and has the protective ears for the stem and knob. The "Vintage Field Watch" does not have to protective ears. This is a mans watch and it is TOUGH. I've had one for 15 years, (3 as a matter of fact). The stainless with the black face is easy to see even at night. I don't think its too large for the average guy, depending on your taste. Get one and I guarantee LL Bean will stand behind it.

I have owned several LLB field watches and have had a gold model for probably 12 years. It proved to be too large, but I wear it at times even though the crown digs into my wrist. I love the accuracy and the classic design. It's just too large for everyday wear.
I ordered this latest one in stainless steel because I thought the measurements posted by LLB indicated it was smaller. It isn't.
The measurement in width of the watch face appears in the photo to be the measurement across the case including the stem and crown. It is actually the measurement across the case excluding the stem and crown (from the "10" to the "4").
My own measurements are that the case is 42 mm across, including stem and crown, and 10 mm thick. In my opinion this is a heavy watch for a guy with a larger than average wrist.
I wish LLB would bring back the smaller version of this watch. For a time they sold one with a French movement that is thinner, lighter, and smaller.
But if you don't mind the size and weight, this one is still a great choice.

Classic Field Watch arrived today. This is my fourth purchase, but I have loved all of them till this one.
It is larger and higher than predecessors, for no discernible reason. NO protective "ears" on case for the large knurled end of stem, unlike illustration. Be warned!
The nylon bands have returned to the simple original design, thank you, from the ornate dual strap of the last one purchased. This is the sole improvement.
The last two I purchased had the black face. I cannot locate a black face basic unit available now, so this BIG white face is staring from my wrist.

Rated 4 out of 5 by CaliforniaMan Classic Field Watch - Gold Plated - is a good deal
This is the third gold plated field watch that I've owned. They're rugged and they stand up to abuse. I've taken mine on trips to Cambodia and Laos and Thailand where the humidity and the dirt can create real problems with time pieces. They have kept good time, the strap lasts, and I have no complaints.
But, as with any device that is heavily used, my field watches have had some problems. The biggest problem has been when time came to replace the battery. Eventually, the watches after four or five or six years won't survive a jeweler's battery swap. Something during the process shorts out, and the watch will need to be replaced. This has now happened with two of them. (I'm on my third.) You could say that the watch was faulty in design, but I don't think that's an accurate statement. Regardless, each time it's failed, LL Bean has provided me with a replacement. So I can't complain. It's a good watch! Not a Rollex, but not a Timex either. I would happily recommend this watch to anyone.

Follow up to my previous review. I bought the black face classic and I just noticed that the hands are the same as the white face with the black outline on the hands. This makes the hands appear smaller than they actually are on the black face. Not at all like the hands in the picture for the black face version. Too bad, I really liked the watch.

The hands are very small and difficult to see...not the same size as displayed in the picture. I love the looks and it fits well on my wrist, but it's going back tomorrow...very disappointing!

I got a laugh out of the folks that complained about the hand size and the band. I am 75 years old and have no trouble seeing the hands without glasses. The watch is great in every way. I have been buying items from L. L. Bean since 1953 and have never got a bad item yet. I ordered the watch late Wednesday night, got an email that it was shipped yesterday, Thursday, and the UPS man dropped the watch off around noon today, Friday. Not even three days to delivery from Maine to Pennsylvania and free shipping too. When I went on the computer a short time later there was a message from L. L. Bean that my package was delivered. Great folks at L.L. Bean. Too bad other companies don?t work like them.
