This bag is not typical LL Bean quality - cheap material, poorly constructed. Sorry, but the Expedition Messenger Bag I bought my husband is much better. Will get one for myself and pay the extra $40. I returned this one. Yikes.

I bought this bag as a "carry all" during a conference when I needed to have my stuff with me, and have space to pick up more stuff. Perfect size. My pad, papers, wallet and essentials git easily and I had plenty of room to pick up all the goodies from the conference.

This bag is great! It's big enough to hold my laptop , a text book, and stacks of papers to grade. Comfortable, cute, and strong. Perfect big bag for a teacher!!

I purchased this bag for my daughter whose in her first year of college. She loves it! She was so excited yesterday that she noticed a special slot for her pen. Now she doesn't have to dig for it like most of us have to do.

Rated 2 out of 5 by UnderBlueSkies Hate the Shoulder Strap
First, let me say my previous Bean messenger bag was the best bag I've ever owned! Durable & smartly designed! This bag is NOT that bag. The shoulder strap is problematic. The flimsy buckle routinely comes undone. I've had to readjust the length of the bag routinely. On my previous bag, I did it once in eight years of use. In addition, the "tail" of the shoulder strap flies loose, which means it gets caught in doors, it gets caught on the velcro of the side pocket, (preventing it from closing properly), and in general is a nuisance. If you are REALLY broad shouldered and tall, this might not be an issue. This is the only Bean product I've ever owned that just didn't seem thoughtfully designed. Am returning after a frustrating month of use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by IdahoMomof3Girls Awesome Messenger Bag for College!
My family is a huge fan of LLBean and my daughter has absolutely loved her messenger bag. She's a college freshman and the size Large is big enough for her small laptop and small enough for her to carry around campus. We originally got the Night color (dark blue) which was so dark it was almost black. Exchanged for the Red with her first initial monogrammed on it. Great bag, and she'll use it for years. My other two high school daughters are already asking for one when they're in college.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Enigma2 Great fit
I like this bag. It easily fits half-size sets of architectural drawings and everything else I need for a businesss meeting, even my laptop or tablet. There are only two things I'm not 100% fond of: I wish instead of the plastic clips they were velcro or magnets. The clips are just too putsy. And I wish one of the zippered side pockets was a little bit deeper. I have a small case for pens, pencils, mini scale, etc. and it doesn't completely fit in the pocket. Otherwise, the material is great and it's a nice classic look.

I have tried so many different bags but this one FINALLY is PERFECT! I ride a commuter bus. I needed something that was waterproof. Large enough to carry everything a woman would carry in a purse and fit over my big winter coat without constantly falling off my shoulder. It holds everything but my lunch! Perhaps LL Bean will find a way to connect a lunch bag to it. I love that my hands are free. I love that it has emergency piping since its dark when I walk to the bus and dark when I walk home! If you are tired of canvas bags that get wet, fall off your shoulder and are completely disorganized - you want this bag. You can organize and find everything - unlike a big purse. And my arm no longer hurts from carrying a heavy bag on it. And if you are wondering - no it doesn't hurt your neck - just move it off to the shoulder a little bit. Yes it would also hold a computer. I don't happen to carry one but it holds my Nook along with all the other "stuff".
