With just one use the top cap came off. Although you can snap it back in just as easily this is clearly a design flaw. I used a zip tie to connect the cap to the rest of the bottle to prevent myself from losing the cap.

I have two of these, love them, and use them regularly. Today when I went to drink from one while kayaking, the top flipped off into the water and sank. My canteen is now useless! The design is poor and with regular use, it top detaches itself.

Rated 1 out of 5 by northbynoreaster pop top pops off - gets lost
Customer service was more than reasonable in replacing the whole canteen, not just the poptop, but it will probably detach again. A more securely fastened drink-through lid is needed to make this a good product. It would be great if they offered a better designed replacement top (similar to the thermos) to customers who purchased this instead of the solid top which eliminates this amenity. Recommendation: go for the thermos - and offer a larger size thermos.

I have dropped this and tipped it upside down and it has not leaked. The little flip top has not popped open either. I bought a 2nd one because it is easy to fill and hold and to open and drink from with 1 hand.(I have small hands.) Fits just fine in my car cup holder. Not a thermos, will sweat if you put cold drinks in it but beats buying bottled water. The opening is large enough for regular square ice cubes to fit in.

Rated 1 out of 5 by AStarGazer bottle good, lid terrible
The bottle itself is very nice. It is stainless steel, with a plastic base on the bottom that protects it from dents. Also, it fits easily in automobile cup holders. Excellent design.
The lid, however, is just terrible.
First, although there is a detent holding the stopper down when closed, it doesn't provide tactile feedback as you close it. I keep pressing on the stopper hard, expecting it to "click", then realizing that it is already closed as tight as it gets.
Second, the stopper is really hard to open. It takes a lot of pull.... unfortunately, whenever I pull the stopper hard enough, it suddenly "lets go" and pulls out of the hinge at the back. Extremely poor design!
Third, the stopper gets in the way and hits my nose when I drink from the bottle.
Fourth, the lid leaks a bit if you have to lay the bottle down sideways on the car seat.
I am returning this bottle; it doesn't even come close to the high design and quality standards that LL Bean merchandise used to have.

by Aviationwife76 Great bottle, horrible lid.
We have two other bean canteens and they both have the sport lid. I like that much better than this one. It's hard to get a continuous drink when you are very thirsty because it seems as though there is no valve to let air in. Very awkward to drink out of. I am using my broken sport top off another bottle to use on this one. I will have to go to another website to try to get a top that fits or sadly have to send this on back. In the picture I have shown the sport lid on the left.

Would be fine, but the cap often comes off when flipped up. While it snaps back on, not fun trying to locate on the trail. Ok for around house and such. Puzzled by such obviouse design defect for LLBean product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Ldrew Well Made But Hard to Drink From
I had the old "Klean Canteen" version of the "Bean Kanteen," but when that got dented, I ordered the new kind of "Bean Kanteen" with a stainless steel body, plastic lid, and plastic bottom.
The plastic bottom is *definitely* an improvement. My old "Bean Kanteen" got dented on the bottom and would fall down every time I put it down on a table. I'm hoping this new design will last longer and be more durable.
I gave this new Bean Canteen three stars because it has no air exchange mechanism, so it is hard to drink from. It's true that the older (Klean Kanteen) model made a lot of noise when you drink from it, but this new design makes noise too as the pressure increases while you drink. A quieter air exchange mechanism would be a great improvement.

Rated 2 out of 5 by VTInnkeeper Handy, well made, but....
As always, LLBean has made a good product, but it needs some improvement. This bottle really keeps things cold, but the cap/fastener pops off very easily! I like to be able to put my drink in my backpack or briefcase, but I can't do it with this purchase. Perhaps a better design for the cap would bring the rating up to 5 stars.

I thought it was insulated to some degree, probably because it looks like an insulated travel mug, but it was not. It is a canteen. A container to carry cold drinks in, not hot. The drinks do not stay colder any longer than any other regular container. Next time I'll read the description more thoroughly.
