Rated 5 out of 5 by OnlineShoppaholic LOVE this vest!
I'm female and quite small - size 4 normally - but I really don't like the color options in many items LL Bean sells for women especially down vests, and really DO like the colors offered in men's clothes. So I decided to try a small size men's in the vest. Yes, it's a bit big on me, but it's not only great looking, it's also wonderfully warm, and I love the extra pockets men get in their clothes. This one has an outside vest pocket and a very useful inside pocket WITH a place for a pen,.as well as the usual hand warmers. Women need/like pockets too, LL Bean!

My Dad's Bean vest is still going strong and a "standard" I use to rank quality.
I wear his now, but it shows the wear of an outdoorsman (and a few fishhook repairs from us kids). His was probably purchased late 70s early 80s.
So I was really excited to get this one. Clean enough to wear in public. Problem is, it is about half as warm??? I can wear this thing indoors on nippy days (and I live in Georgia). No way can you keep Dad's on indoors.
Quite disappointed in that fact. The rest of the quality seems fine, but it has been reduced to a soccer mom vest rather than a vest for outdoorsmen or one from an outfitter. Bring back the old vest please. I don't care if it costs double. Outfitter quality is why I am a Bean die hard and why I keep coming back.

by BurleyK Not as warm as my Dad's LL Bean Vest
This vest is quality and a "nice vest". My Dad's LLBean goose down vest was purchased in the late 70s or 80s I would guess. His is a "great vest".
I can't put my finger on it? it may be that the fill is less now. Definitely this vest is not as "puffy". However, his vest is STILL to this day significantly warmer. For example, I can wear this vest in the house. His I would have to take off in 30 min to an hour as it would be to hot.
Why did I buy another one? Well, the old one was used for yard work and woodland adventures. It shows it's history with stains and a few repairs with a needle and thread (can't blame kids with fish hooks on LLBean). So I just wanted one that I could wear to work without looking like I just walked in from the woods.
I would have to say I am a little disappointed. I wanted the warmth and my fathers vest (and his Bean goose down coat) are kind of bench marks for me. I think most consumers will be fine with this vest, but that is because they don't know the difference in the past quality? at least from a warmth perspective. That's why regrettably I had to give it a 3. If I was rating it on an woodland/outdoors/camp scale? I would drop it to two stars. Keep in mind I now live in Savannah, Ga (not nearly as cold) and I still am disappointed. Tough to type for a die-hard LLBean fan.

Rated 5 out of 5 by mermaidhiker goosedown vest, great fit and good price
cant beat the price on this goosedown vest, got it for my honey..he had one he loved and it got left at a trail ride..i originally got him the waxed cotten waterproof down vest but it was too long and lacks the softness that this vest has. This was perfect, length was right for sitting in the saddle and not having the vest rise or bunch..Hes very happy!!!

The only reason to have a down vest is to get thick insulation around your body for very cold weather. Otherwise just wear a sweater or warm shirt, right? This vest has maybe a quarter inch of down in some cells, and the upper chest cells have so little feathers you can feel fabric-on-fabric at the top of the cell -- empty and totally worthless for providing warmth. This is after shaking it out and giving it plenty of time to "puff up". Each cell should be plump with down, otherwise there's no point in having a down vest. It's a real bummer because the vest is really well made otherwise and would be great if they had just properly fills the cells with enough feathers.

I gave this vest to my husband for Christmas, and he absolutely loves it. Although I live in the South, we still get cold, damp days. This vest is perfect.

I have a previous LLBean black down vest, reversible to red, with firm zipper instead of buttons, and cinch ties on the bottom edge. Wish LL would offer that again vs this cheapened version with fleece, and only buttons that leave slight wintry gaps. Poly fleece also leaves many of my shirts with static, vs the nylon of the previous vest. Quality isn't suffering on all LL products, but it is on some; so be it, bump the price up if needed!

Lightweight, warm, long lasting, great quality. I bought this same vest about 3 years ago and it still looks great. However, while working he managed to burn a small hole on the front. I got him another for Christmas 2012 because he absolutely loved the first one.

How do you do it? A fine piece of outerware! Comfy for southern winters over a flannel shirt for outdoors. Very sophisticated casual look. Nice high collar when the wind whips up and zipped pockets are a great feature. 100% well built.

I've never owned a cold weather vest, and never had a down cold weather garment before. I must say I'm impressed. The quality is excellent, and the warmth and versatility of the vest is everything one could hope for. Wearing down outerwear is like walking around in a pillow. I will be purchasing more L.L. Bean down outerwear in the future.
