Love this jacket, but the sleeves and length could be shortened a little. The arm length is more like a motorcycle jacket. I ussualy wear medium, but the small is very roomy - good thing I tried it on on the store.

As a senior 2nd Generation LL Bean shopper, I expect both the quality and customer that LL Bean provides. In my humble opinion, this jacket is the epitome of quality, functionality, appearance and ruggedness, expected in a medium weight working jacket. When I received the first, I immediately ordered a second in the other color.
The ONLY improvement to be made, would be a heavy-duty main zipper that would be easier to use when wearing gloves......like an older (LL Bean) unlined jacket that these replaced. LL would be proud of this!

Rated 4 out of 5 by sfnativeguy Better than advertised
The design of this jacket seems to have outpaced its catalog description. For one thing, the back of the jacket is longer than the front, like a shirttail, assuring no gaps. Another review faults the interior pocket for not accommodating a cellphone; well, it does now. That pocket is zipped, by the way, not sealed with Velcro as the description indicates. The insulation layer, coupled with the rather stout cotton fabric, results in a warm jacket, not a warm weather chill chaser. I have not worn the jacket for long and therefore cannot assess its long term durability--that's what keeps me from according it five stars. As to size: I am 6' tall, 170 lbs. and wear a 34" shirtsleeve--the regular medium is fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Cobrajet Great jacket!
This jacket looks bulky but isn't. I bought it for my husband in green. It's more attractive than in the catalog. Washes and dries without shrinking. Would highly recommend this jacket.

Outstanding coat that's warm and comfortable. Only problem is the difficult to use zipper. Small and hard to connect.

Comfortable, love the feel of the material, and all the pockets. If you would offer this in navy blue, and not change anything about it, I would order another one!

Comfortable but stiff while still new, Hoping it will soften up with wear or after the first washing. Fits well after adjusting with side buttons. Feels heavy enough to wear on all but the coldest days.

Rated 2 out of 5 by BrianKW Great expectations . . . shattered
Let me preface this review by stating that I already own the Katahdin vest, which I rate 5/5. Hands-down my favorite article of clothing I own. That being said, I had high hopes for this jacket.
If I didn't already own the vest, I would rate this 3.5/5 and likely recommend it. The diminished quality of this jacket vs. the vest leads to my rating, which should be 1.5/5. This jacket is far from rugged and nowhere near as water and stain repellant as the vest. Also, the liner is a department-store quality quilted nylon fabric. I was hoping for the same rugged wool liner in my vest.
All in all, it is fairly obvious LL Bean is cutting corners with this item. It isn't in the same league as the vest and it appears the old style of vest is being phased out as well. Hopefully there will be enough complaints to get LL Bean back on the right track with respect to product quality.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Jech Great, but with one flaw
I had very high hopes for the Katahdin Iron Works Lined Jacket. I was buying this to replace a leather jacket. I was immediately impressed with the Katahdin Jacket. I really liked the exterior canvas texture. It?s very tough and sturdy, yet it?s not unpleasant to touch. There are leather jackets out there that are either smooth and soft, or just too stiff. This canvas is a happy medium.
I liked that the jacket is a relaxed fit that sits nicely at the hip. I loved the rear drop tail and the bi-wing shoulders. The drop tail provides a little bit of extra rear coverage, and the bi-wing shoulders make arm swings very easy and comfortable. Those 2 features are rarely found on jackets, but LL Bean did a great job here. The zippers are heavy duty, and feel like they will outlast the jacket. I didn?t care much for the exterior chest pocket, as I found it to be more for looks. The interior pocket was just the right size.
I also really liked the interior lining. It?s a smooth nylon that allows easy on and off access, with plenty of room in both the body and sleeve width to allow layering underneath. The PrimaLoft insulation is such a nice feature. I have another jacket with PrimaLoft, and the insulation is very warm and very light without extra bulk.
I cannot stress how much I really wanted to like this jacket for the texture, the shoulders, the insulation and interior comfort. However, the big downfall for me was the sleeve length, particularly the cuffs. It is beyond too long, and I wear a SMALL. For reference, I wear a 32/33 size sleeve in dress shirts. On this jacket, the end of the cuffs fall well passed my thumbs when my arms are by my sides. It feels like I?m a child wearing my dad?s or big brother?s jacket. The sleeve length would be perfect for me if the cuffs ended at the seam where the cuffs meet the sleeve. The seam between the 2 sits right at my wrist. The seam also falls even with the jacket?s body length. I?ve tried wearing the cuffs folded back, but then it just looks weird because they don?t fold flat and it makes the cuffs useless. I?ve tried pulling the sleeves up and tightening the cuffs to the second button, but then I can?t get my hand through. The extra 2-3 inches that the cuffs add is just too much. It seems that the sleeve length was sized properly but the cuffs were an after-thought, so they were just added on without sleeve adjustment.
I hate to give up a good jacket for one flaw, but a great jacket only looks and feels good on a person if it fits well. I would still recommend this jacket, as people come in different sizes, and someone else may fit better.
