I was a bit worried buying a backpack for $80 but when this came in the mail I was super happy. It's super rugged and I don't see it falling apart any time. No pocket, no zippers, just a simple backpack. I got this for traveling and wanted something that was a bit bigger than a normal school back pack. This is a great size, the color is great and it has a great oiled bottom leather that if it happens to sit in a puddle of water then it won't be a big deal. I wanted something that was going to look timeless and simple overall just a nice bag and this was it.

This pack is wonderful! The clean lines on the outside of the item are free of pockets and zippers to snag on things. The leather bottom and attachment sites are of excellent quality. I love the retro-looking LL Bean tag; it reminds me of some of the items I purchased from the early seventies. I use this bag daily on my bicycle commute to the college. It has replaced my panniers and has made my bike profile lighter, cleaner and easier to "park and go." The webbing on the back of the pack allows for an excellent thermoregulatory effect.

I am very pleased with this pack. I was looking for a reasonably priced "kletter sack" type pack, and this one is perfect. It is similar to the packs that I climbed with in the 80's and 90's. Today I use it more for day hikes in the woods with my wife and dog, but I still wanted a simple, bomb-proof design without all of the bells and whistles that are more designed for the coffee shop than the woods/mountains. This is a great pack at a great price. And it has an ice axe loop, which makes me feel good, even though I'll probably never need one again!

I bought this backpack to replace/supplement one of nearly identical design that is nearly 30 years old. The old one is still serviceable, however the LL Bean version offered sufficient updates, and at a great price, it was easy to buy.
So - what are the updates - a better hip belt, better shoulder straps, and the inside of the bag is lined. The lining is critical as it improves the waterproofing of the bag, and with leather bottomed bags, wet leather is never fun.
This is not a fancy modern bag with lots of straps - this is a workhorse. Inconspicuous, sturdy, holds a ton, and if it needs to hold more, has plenty of attachment points. I looked at a lot of bags, and simplicity goes a long way!

This vintage pack is very nice and rugged for day hiking or even overnight backpacking for a couple of days in the summer. L.L. Bean understands that it is a good idea to bring back some of the vintage gear, because it is stylish and of high quality. Thank you LL Bean for bringing back gear of the past. I really like the looks and function of this pack.

This bag is sort of fine, but the cons outweigh the pro's... and it suffers greatly by comparison to Bean's continental rucksack... which is a great bag on all fronts.
Now buying this bag, you accept that it has no side or exterior pockets... relying instead on lash points (the straps for which don't come with the bag) and that limits functionality.
The inner security pocket isn't felted like in the continental rucksack, the shoulder straps, while padded are thinner than the rucksack's, the top flap pocket is large, and nice but the zipper is thin and not robust. The waist strap is thin - and doesn't tuck into the frame... like the rucksack.
I'll say also that I really WANTED to like this bag. But it just doesn't feel like the details were all thought out. It's a shame. The leather lash points are handsome, and so is the bag in general - but it's just not enough to offset the design details not being up to snuff. Also - and this is more of a general pet peeve... why don't they put a sleeve down the back on thin side of these bags to allow the comfortable portage of a computer. would be such an easy add on.
