Rated 5 out of 5 by Altotus Easy to install & load; very secure transport
Purchased for use with 12 ft Manatee that I had just bought from LLBean as my first kayak. Hull-a-Port was easy to install on roof rack of our Outback, and after figuring out the strap system the first time (and where to best attach the stern and bow ropes to the car, I had no problems in securing the kayak for its first and subsequent rides on the roof to our nearby lake. Very stable and solid piece of equipment that gives me high level of confidence in providing safe and secure transport.
Final Note: I would consider getting the Hull-a-Port Pro if I had to do it over, as the fold-down feature would be helpful if you are doing frequent, repeated kayak transports with your car AND you keep your car in a standard height garage or carport. With the regular Hull-a-Port model that I purchased, you have to remove it each time you park. Although pretty quick to do (8 quick spin nuts), it's one additional step to do after a long day out just to be able to park your car back in the garage after removing your kayak.

Rated 5 out of 5 by USSAlbany Off to the Nearest Lake
Having only been kayaking for about three years, and never living in a situation where storing a kayak was all that convenient, I nevertheless recently grew tired of renting unpredictably performing kayaks wherever I went paddling and acquired a gently used LL Bean kayak from a colleague. I soon realized that I wasn't going to get much use out of it even at my nearest calm bodies of water without a good car rack to get it there using my sedan. This Thule system has been great so far in my outings, holding the kayak firmly in place during drives ranging in distance from several spots about 15 miles away to a lake nearly four hours down the road. Special thanks to the two guys at the LL Bean's in Tysons Corner, Va., for expertly installing the rack and showing me all the tricks to using the straps effectively!

After research & reading reviews we choose these from LLBean as your price was exactly like some other famous companies; yet, we knew LLBean stands by their product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by yakpacker more rack room. more secure ride.
these are perfect for creating more room on your rack for a box or another boat.
plus when strapping the kayaks down,
the "on-its-side" angel, that these J-racks provide,
will not "crush or compress the kayak itself.
Like it WILL do- if just strapping the kayak directly to a padded rack.
And this side angle makes longer kayaks more stable/rigid with less flexing from road vibrations and bumps...

The installation instructions are completely wrong. Image 5A which details how to strap the kayak down shows an image of a completely different system. Thule support is impossible to reach by phone and email response is just "the instructions should be correct - call the help line". Download the installation instructions online before purchasing and you will see what I mean.

As my friends have said as they've seen the recently installed Thule 834 Hull-a-Port racks on my car, "NICE RACKS!" Yes, they are! Easily installed and fairly easy to load two Kayaks onto my Highlander by myself. A lot easier with two people to lift Kayaks over my head, it is still "do-able" to do alone. Nice Racks!

Rated 3 out of 5 by alh008 Good but could be better
I haven't used these with my Kayak yet but have tried them out with my rack. I have the aero load bars (shaped like wings to cut down on whistling) and the instructions tell you to use the shorter screws which don't fit. Luckily they provide you with longer screws for non Thule racks that do fit but this may be a problem with cars that have the rack close to the roof or where the racks bend slightly due to heavy weight where the screws would hit the top of the car. Also, the mounting bracket just fits over the rack and, while you can tighten it up, it does not make a perfect fit and is hard to get on. It looks like the carriers are of older design then the load bars and somebody at Thule looked at the specs and assumed they would fit. While they do fit, it is close and could be made much better with a re-designed mounting bracket.

Rated 5 out of 5 by iMac6 Overall a great kayak rack!
We had another set of Hull-a-ports we bought a few years ago, so we finally got around to getting another set. Just a few observations:
These newer kits do not have the ratcheting hooks used to tie the kayak down to the front and back of the vehicle. We definitiely miss this.
The tiedown straps are also much longer with this kit compared to the last one we purchased. I don't really know why, because I can't imagine any kayak that would utilize the entire length of those straps!
Overall, it was exactly what I expected. Same quality, same ease of use. Highly recommended if the more expensive kayak racks are beyond your budgetary limitations.

Along with the foot pack and the Thule bars, getting my kayak to the lake is easy. Great easy on and off between trips, only 5 minutes. Very sturdy, strapping easy to use and efficient. Great product.
