The eTrex 10 GPS is an entry level GPS. It has many of the features found on more advanced GPS models. The eTrex 10 comes loaded with a base world map, it is rugged, reliable, accurate, easy to carry and to operate. For those looking for a basic entry level GPS, it is a great value.

This GPS has some issues. It will show a line on the screen to show your progress, that is it. No topo lines, hard to read. Would it be helpful in an emergency, It may be. I set the alarms to let me know if I was in the same spot that I pinned, and basically this function is useless. With a GPS you should be able to mark a spot in the woods set your alarm and return to the same spot and have the GPS beep to let you know you are in the same location. It should have trails and logging roads on them, with all highways. I also tried the Dakota, with the PA chip that was sold extra 100.00.IT was not much h better. Stick with the GPS on your smart phone.

I am very satisfied with the quality of the product. I am extremely satisfied with the knowledge and assistance from the employee that assisted me with my purchase. He was extremely patient and explained in great detail how to set it up and operate it.
LL Bean is always a great place to shop. I have never had anything but great assistance from the knowledgable staff at LL Bean.
Love their return policy.

This is a handy little device. Since I am a beginner I had to download the 60 page manual from Garmin. Don't go out depending on it without practicing first. That being said I look forward to using it on scientific ventures where identifying place is important.

This is a good, basic, no frills gps. We bought it for geocaching, and it works fine. It is accurate. It doesn't have any maps on it though, so you can't see roads or trails or anything except your waypoints.

Cannot figure out how to use it. I am waiting to go to a Boy Scout function to ask! Then it will be a valuable tool.
I just want to put in coordinates manually, have not tried it via the internet!

The functions of his GPS were not exactly easy for me to figure out. I had only used one other tracking GPS one time before. It is not something that I will use every day so I expect that I will have to reacquaint myself with it each time I use it.
That being said, I went out for a walk around the neighborhood and found the point setting very accurate. Unfortunately it wasn't until after I got to my second to last way-point on the way home that I figured out that not only would it give you the direction that you were traveling along a return vector but it would give you the distance and the time it would take to get to the next way-point. I intentionally went past a way-point and the direction of travel arrow went with me when I turned back it told me how far back I had to go to get to the way-point that I had past.
I have not used the compass to navigate to way-points for my return trip yet but that may be easier to use than the tracks.
The common features such as the Stop Watch and Calendar may be handy for some people. Other things like the Proximity Alarm and Way-point Manager will probably be handy for the more advanced user.
The distance calculation was spot on. I am not too sure about the altimeter. it seems to change by about 6 feet when placed in the same spot from one use to the next.
Several times I didn't get the response out of the joy stick that I had intended. For example when I pushed it down to select an option I would actually move it to the next option by moving it down, up or to one side. I had my gloves on for some of the unintentional moves and when I took the gloves off so my hands were cold for the others. All of the buttons on the sides of the unit were responsive and easy to push even with gloves on.
All in all I think for the price I got more than I thought I would be getting. I only wish there were some sort of an on line tutorial on how the use the device.

The eTrex 10 does everything you'll need in a GPS. It just doesn't have downloadable maps. But every hiker/cyclist I know recons their routes on websites beforehand. Just plug the waypoints in and go, or download the .gpx track.
I love the customizeable dashboards, and the fact I can easily export and import .GPX files for later viewing on a PC or geocaching on the unit.

I have an etrex original model and am happy with it. It was easy to use. I wanted another one for the rest of the family. That model was discontinued so I ordered its replacement, the etrex 10. I have wasted a day trying to use it. The documentation in the box is worthless. The documentation on line is worthless. I can mark a waypoint and then find the distance to it with some trouble. After a day I still cannot find the bearing. I'm returning it.
All the new options made it worse.
