Product Details

  • Made from softwoods reclaimed from the bottom of the Penobscot River by West Branch Heritage Timber of Millinocket, Maine
  • Handcrafted by Shaw & Tenney in Orono, Maine
  • High-gloss marine urethane finish

Like L.L.Bean, this classic paddle is a product of Maine ingenuity and hard work. It's made from softwoods reclaimed from the bottom of the Penobscot River in northern Maine. The Penobscot was used by Maine's historic river drivers to transport over two trillion board feet of timber from the late 1700s until 1971. Some of this timber inevitably sank to the bottom of the river where it was perfectly preserved. We partnered with West Branch Heritage Timber of Millinocket, Maine, to recover the wood, and with Shaw & Tenney of Orono, Maine, to build these beautiful paddles.

Because the reclaimed wood displays different characteristics based on how long it's been in the river, each paddle will be unique in appearance. Shaw & Tenney has been making the finest handcrafted wooden paddles available since 1858. Ours is painstakingly built by master craftsmen and finished with a high-gloss marine urethane. The grip is left unvarnished to help prevent blisters. Made in Maine.
