Rated 2 out of 5 by excustomer Very disappointed: Not up to LLBean standards
I've been an LLBean customer for over 30 years and up til now have never had a bad purchasing experience. These bookshelves changed that and have altered my attitude about LLBean.
I ordered & received two of the 60" shelves. First, the positives: The bookshelves are made of solid hardwood. They're substantial. They're attractive as well, matching the several other mission themed pieces of furniture I've purchased from LLB over the years.
The first bookshelf assembled fairly easily, though not with a screwdriver. I strongly endorse what other reviewers have said: Use a power drill. It makes a huge difference in setting and driving the screws.
The second bookshelf was awful to assemble. Six of the holes for anchoring the shelves to the frame were misaligned. Two of them barely qualify as 'holes'. This meant, of course, that the screws wouldn't go into the shelves. I had to spend serious time re-drilling the holes that should have been done properly in the first place, especially given the $319 price tag.
In the end, after spending a lot of time redoing the drilling, I got the bookshelf assembled, but it's much more wobbly than it should be and I've had to anchor it to the wall against which it stands. (As other reviewers have stated, I'd have returned or exchanged it if it didn't take super powers to repackage the unit in the box that LLBean sent.)
In the end, I've got the two bookshelves, though one of them is unstable. The whole affair raises a couple of issues for me. First, these shelves are not cheap. They're an American-made product using real hardwood, so I was willing to spend the money, but I'm not ready to spend it on the real workmanship problems that characterized one of the two units.
Second--and this bothers me even more--the misaligned drilling issue is a problem that one reviewer after another has noted in comments on the Bean mission bookshelves, going back many months. Clearly LLBean must know that people are having these problems. Equally clearly, LLBean isn't doing anything about the problem: They're still selling bookshelves with misaligned or improperly drilled holes.
LLBean used to be a very different company. I'm not buying any more furniture from them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by DelightedwithBean Perfect!
I have made numerous purchases at LL Bean over many years and it is my first go to place for great quality items. This is however my first review. Not only is the shelf beautiful, but was very easy to put together so 5 stars for that but I'd give it 5+ more for the superb customer service. My ever so helpful son used half the wood pegs in the wrong places and we found ourselves short 10; totally our fault. Customer service had addition 10 shipped out ASAP-no charge. I am so impressed with the kindness and understanding of the LL Bean representative. Thank you for going above and beyond!

Rated 3 out of 5 by BIGINDIAN Mission bookcase 46"
Would agree with other reviews that this bookcase is overpriced for the quality of the product and not up to the L.L. Bean name. 2 of the shelves edges were rough with minor splintering which should have been sanded before the finish was applied. Assembly was easy and required only 20 minutes to complete, but here's an indication of quality control. The instructions were simple and easy to follow until you got to step 5 & 6 which referred you to step 4 to continue the assembly but there is no step 4 on the instructions. Fortunately assembly was so easy you do not need the step 4 to complete.

Although a beautiful piece, I struggled to put it together. The holes on the shelves did not align with the holes on the base and it resulted in 3 failed attempts to complete this project. The forth time, frustrated, I completed the shelf but it took a lot of manual labor over an extended period of time. Maybe it was our individual product that was hard to complete, because the other reviews I read said it was 'easy' and 'simple'. It could have been made easier if the pieces were labeled and there was a clear front and back. I found the construction it unnecessarily difficult but that is only my experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by LauraW Love this piece!
Easy assembly, sturdy and it looks great. This is the 4th piece from the Mission collection that we've purchased (the first 2 were in 2008) and we're pleased that the color of the stain matches the older items.

Rated 2 out of 5 by co2ks good quality, too expensive
The quality of this piece is adequate and assembly is simple. However, considering the dimensions and "build it yourself" aspect, it seems overpriced.
I wish now that I had purchased a larger, fully assembled bookcase from a local furniture dealer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Dijor Easy assembly
Just put this together for my 85 year old father-in-law. His house and closets are total LLBean, nothing but! This was easy for me, alone, to assemble (I did use a driver instead of screwdriver) . I just had to wait for my hubby to return to move it to the family room. Grandpa loves it. I was impressed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by daffodil Very nice but flawed
We have two other of these shelves in different configurations: the 3 shelf version, and the 2 shelf under-the-window one. Like those, this is very attractive when assembled, but we encountered some drawbacks not met with for the other shelves. First, one of the shelves had pre-drilled pilot holes which were off-the-mark by about 1/4 inch and had to be redrilled (I refer to the fortifying bar under the shelf, which is at a right-angle to the shelf itself); there was no way it would fit without properly positioning the holes. . Secondly, we have the shelf free-standing in order to use both sides for books. Positioned in this way, it does not have a totally sturdy feel to it, and indeed there is an attachment brace of sorts which is supposed to deal with this issue, but isn't really applicable in our situation. All-in-all I would still recommend this shelf; the former problem may be atypical, and the latter ought to be addressed by a stabilizing design option better than the one provided.

Rated 3 out of 5 by OutdoorGram Lumber bowed
I ordered this piece to match one purchased in 2008. My husband struggled to put to together because the shelves and the end pieces were bowed. He did manage to force it together. Once it's all out of the box, it would be a major project to repack and return it. I'm not sure if return shipping would have been covered by my LLBean Card privilege, because there was an extra freight charge. I'm not sure if this is an on-going problem or not. I'd recommend to friends with caution.

Beautiful. Easy to assemble. Can't wait to get the "matching" console. Very pleasant on the eye.
