I plan on transitioning all of my beds in two houses to these sheets. That's two sets of sheets for eight beds. Good sleep is so important for health and happiness. This is a much better investment than your cable bill.
These sheets are crisp, cool and, yes, soft.
I've been looking for good sheets for decades. I've tried many luxury thread counts and have frequently been disappointed. To get a better sheet than this, you pretty much have to spend several hundred dollars and buy a proper luxury sheet. These are great value.
And yes, they do soften over time. One washing is not enough to fully break them in.
To those who say they're not soft or feel like plastic, I'm not really sure what to say except that for years manufacturers have presented us with ready-made "broken in" softness that is produced by chemically or mechanically beating down fibers. It's no wonder we are confused as to what real cotton feels like. Cotton has a substantial "hand." Those velvety cottons that almost seem like they have a nap are a result of chemical or mechanical breakdown of the fiber structure. Obviously you won't get as much use out of cotton that has already had some of the life beaten out of the fiber. Another kind of softness comes from the way the fabric is woven. "Sateen" has a different weave structure that presents a smoother surface than a percale but again, sateen doesn't wear as well as percale, which is a tighter weave.
The qualities that make a fabric soft also add to it's warmth. The micro "nap" of a pre-broken in cotton holds heat. The sateen weave structure also traps warm are more than percale. Personally I don't love flannel sheets with all their warm air pockets even in winter. Heating-trapping softness can affect how well you sleep. Humans literally sleep better when they feel slightly cool. It's part of our diurnal rhythm. When the sun goes down and the temperatures fall, our bodies actually slow down and prepare for sleep. To me the best rest comes from crisp sheets for coolness next to the skin with a heavier weight comforter or blanket on top to keep my body heat from evaporating into a slightly cool room. Not too hot and not too cold, just like Goldilocks.
To "Good House Keeper" who was unhappy that these sheets came out of the dryer wrinkled, I would remind her/him that cotton without a chemical coating does wrinkle and if that's a problem for you, take the sheets out of the dryer sooner. The wrinkles set as the sheets cool in a heap in the dryer. The only cotton that doesn't wrinkle is chemically treated.
To those who say these sheets don't live up to percale sheets they have known from the old days, I just sigh and wish I could have experienced those.
And to LL Bean I say, "Thank you for the great sheets." And please consider bringing back those Percale 220's everyone is talking about. It seems like you've got the last decent percale sheets in the marketplace. Clearly there's a market, albeit a specialty one. Couldn't they be a premium offer? I'd be interested.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Lithojam Good, not great
With confidence I purchased this sheet set for our guest room. We have happily used Bean's percale sheets for years. Fresh out of the package their softness made a great first impression. After being machine washed and dried, their soft feel was maintained. When I made up the bed, however, I was sorry to discover that the flat sheet was badly mottled with big white blotches in the otherwise cream ("Natural") color. (I had used only Tide and Downy softener - no bleach.). I am keeping the set as I need it now for guests. The top sheet is covered by blankets anyway. Neither the bottom fitted sheet nor the two pillow cases show the problem. I hope others' luck is better than mine if they are not so tolerant of the problem I discovered today.

I used to focus on the thread count when buying sheets until I figured out that I really don't like silky, soft sheets. These percale sheets are much closer to the sturdy, crisp feel that I was looking for. I purchased these pillowcases to add on to my previous purchase of the Sunwashed Percale sheets both in a King and Queen size.

Oh em gee! These are, literally, the perfect sheets. I am super picky about sheets and bedding; I ordered and returned sets from three other companies before finding L.L. Bean's Sunwashed Percale. They are everything others have said: crisp, cool, light, airy, and deliciously soft--the right kind of soft, not that icky, heavy, satiny feeling. I can practically see them drying on the line in the sunshine at a Caribbean spa. I love them so much, I'm immediately ordering a second pair. Please, L.L. Bean, never change them!

I love my sunwashed percale sheets I just purchased from LLBean. I've been trying for ages to get the same feel that I had growing up when the sheets were always hung outdoors. Thank you LLBean for finding just what I wanted. They feel and smell (how do you do that even after washing them, or is it just my wishing and imagination!) just like I remember. Wow! They are great. I'd certainly recommend them to anyone.

These sheets are everything I have been searching for. I bought one set and fell in love and came back and bought a second set. I'm sure I will be buying more. They are cool, crisp, have a body to them that you don't find with supima, and get better with every washing. The deep pockets are great and the sides of the sheets really cover the mattress. I only wish the fitted sheets were offered as separates as I don't always want a flat sheet. Please don't change them.

I recently received my set of sunwashed percale sheets and pillowcases. I purchased them based on the reviews. I am vey disappointed with this product- they hardly feel washed and almost do not feel like all cotton. I wished I would have returned before using-- maybe I got a bad batch. I think the term sunwashed is very misleading when it come to this product.

I just received my Sunwashed Cotton Percale sheet set (with an added set of standard pillow cases) in white. After washing them, they have a wonderful crisp cotton feel. Yes, they make the typical sound associated with a thickly woven, crisp cotton. If you are looking for the limp, silky, sateen sheets, then check other options at LL Bean. These percale sheets are exactly what I have been looking for! I cannot attest to their durability yet, but I am keeping my fingers crossed.
One suggestion: Consider making a queen size pillow case. The only option is standard or king. I would have ordered king, but I wanted the pillow cases to match the ones that came in the queen sheet set and those appeared to be a standard.
Satisfied so far!

This review may sound like a robot wrote it, but I assure you, I researched sheets extensively, perusing several websites and reading others' review over and over. I settled on these and had somewhat low expectations because of the price point.
I wanted sheets that breathed, that had that slight crinkly feel (do not mistake this with lumpy, or sheets that bunch up and leave marks on your skin). They remind me of when I stayed in a pensione in Italy years ago on an Island in Sicily. Or, the kind of sheets you might find at a spa. They were cool, soft.... like super soft and they feel like they have been baking in the sun. They seriously remind me of Summer, and vacations, and they remind me of the salty sea.
They are not sateen soft, which frankly, feel to me like slick, silky, slippery sheets that don't absorb any heat. I would wake up sweating bullets. These sheets make me want to retire my sateens instantly. In fact, one night on these sheets and I ordered another this morning.
The best I've ever had, and unbelievable price.

by Joaniepc Falling apart!
I loved these sheets when I first received them. Yes, they crackle, but that didn't bother me. They soon became soft. After several washings, little holes started appearing, which grew larger with each wash. Both the pillow cases and the sheets now have large holes. I get angry every time I look at the holes. While these were not the very best sheets I could have purchased, they still should have lasted a lot longer than they did! They weren't cheap! Would not recommend!
