Rated 3 out of 5 by LomboFromNL Looks like a quality Product
Great quality as is usually the case with L.L.Bean . Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to actually use it yet do to weather conditions in the northeast. My only problem is that two weeks after I purchased this item, it was on sale at 20% less than what I paid for it. Wish I had known.

This is a terrific outfit for those who travel a lot or just want to have a rod / fly rod handy in a vehicle. I rated this 4 stars instead of 5 stars only because the spin cast reel is a bit smaller than expected, however having said this, the quality and performance of the reel is very good. The fly rod is very responsive for a 6-piece. The fly reel is basic, but again, the performance and the quality is good for the price. This will certainly allow you to fish during your travels. Great case, well padded, so don't hesitate to throw it in your suit case and fly off and enjoy fishing where ever you travel...one of the better travel dual kits out there. Thanks L. L. Bean.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Drizzle88 Great for impromptu fishing and beginners
This is a great kit for the fisherman or woman who may find themselves with the sudden desire to drop a line in transit. Both rods disassemble nicely and store well in the container. They also have pretty good action and are of excellent quality as per most L.L.Bean items.
I have used the spin rod to fish for sunfish, bass, perch, pike, and various other lake fish in north-central Minnesota. I am still learning to wield the fly rod in an effective manner, but so far have caught one smallmouth bass--great fun! I am moving to Idaho soon and I am very excited to get in some trout and possibly salmon fishing while I am there.
I would highly recommend this kit to anyone who does not have a lot of room to store a rod and reel in their vehicle and anyone who may be interested in getting into fishing but may not have an extensive knowledge of the sport.
The only "complaints" I have are very minimal. The travel container is of good quality, but I wish the vinyl cover would have been replaced with a canvas one. I can foresee the day when the cover breaks well before it should. The addition of an introductory "fishing manual" would make this a perfect beginner's kit, complete with a few flies and some tackle.
The biggest complaint I have is with the delivery service provider used by L.L.Bean. It took 3 weeks for my order to arrive, when it should have only taken 4-7 business days. I can only say I preferred it when a certain public entity was the primary delivery service. Needless to say, such a delay would not have happened.

Ever since my trusty pack rod rolled rolled off the gunwales of my solo canoe in Minnesota's boundary waters I've veen looking for a decent combo that won't break the bank. Last weekend I got to try the fly rod in this kit on some brook trout streams and ponds in northern Maine. The fly rod has a decent action and a light, large-arbor reel, and with 6 peieces it will fit in a small tube. If you're a lefty like me the reel is reversible too.
I found the fly line had a defect about 15 feet back from the tip, and when I returned from the trip Bean's put on a new line for me no questions aksed. I live near Freeport so it was easy to go to the store, but of course they would replace the whole outfit if it was a mail order situation. Can't beat the guarantee.
The spinning rod has decent backbone for an ultralight and the reel has nice balance and smooth action.
The case has a flexible plastic zip top, so I leave it open or partly zipped for awhile if I put a rod away with wet line. The case is great for a vehicle. Keep some flies and lures in the 2 small boxes that come in the case and you'r ready to go any time. The case is too heavy and bulky for for backcounty trips, so I suggest some light PVC tubing in that situation and carry your reel in a small cloth bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by gamhines Excellent fly spin combo. great value
Bought this because I wanted a compact out fit for camping and the ability to use both fly and spin. After the 4th trip out I broke the spin rod tip while fishing. Called customer service to get the tip replaced. They sent me a complete new out fit. Now that's customer service. The spin out fit is a light weight that I caught a 20" brown trout on. I am sure it's not designed for a fish that big. It worked fantastic. I have tried the fly rod and it casts better then some of the more expensive rods I have tried. Thanks LL Bean for the great!! service.

Rated 5 out of 5 by CVinton Good for its intended purpose
I bought the kit during a sale to shove under my truck seat so that I could hit the fishing holes when ever I found myself with spare time.
The case is a good fit, and the small tackle boxes are quality and have the capacity for the bare-bones flies and lures to pursue your intended game fish. (Bass, Bluegill, occasional trout). I'n not a huge fan of the clear lid, but it helps to show off the merchandise.
I've yet to play with the spin rod to any extent. The cork handle is of high quality, the finish is nice, and the reel is of acceptable quality. Its not one of your heavy hitter rods for long days on the lake, but I feel comfortable with it. The mono that comes with it has to go though.
The fly rod has landed about 2 dozen bluegill and bass so far and is the main reason I bought the kit. I'm a huge fan of the cork handles. It comes with 5 weight floating line and is very versatile. I'll be hitting the creeks again this weekend most likely with it.
Overall, an excellent buy for sale price. If you're a die hard spin fisher of fly fisher, save your money and spend it on a higher quality reel and rod. Otherwise, pick this up and let the conditions dictate your methods.
