This bag is gorgeous, the leather is of high quality and is built to last a lifetime. As other reviewers have said it is heavy, but if you want a heavy duty leather rucksack that is tough, you can expect it to have some weight to it. Its beauty far outweighed me worrying about the excess ounces. What really worries me about it is that the magnetic clasp that is supposed to hold the top shut does not do that. Every time I pick the bag up it unlatches. Nothing is in jeopardy of falling out but I don't like traveling with a bag that is open. This seems to be the main problem with the bag, although I am having one other problem. On the smaller pockets there is a zipper and a flap with a magnetic closure. One of the magnets somehow came loose and is floating around inside the bag and now this flap also doesn't stay shut. This is all after very minimal use, six to ten days of use at home and two week long work trips. The bag sat in the room after I got to my destination, it was only used when I was actually traveling to and from, so it has not taken very much abuse. For better functionality, I would love to see straps and buckles on this bag like they have on the Maine Guide Rucksack (minus the quick release buckles underneath, seems like those would eventually break). Another reviewer said they took it to a leather worker to put straps on it, I'm also thinking of doing that. I'd love to see a picture of what his bag looks like now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Planepassenger1983 A Lifetime Bag But.......
I will like to start off and say this is a beautiful crafted bag. The color is just a little lighter than what the picture shows. It has a lot of room inside the bag. I usually fit my ipad which has a compartment of its own, a pair of jeans, shirt, undergarments and a pair of shoes in the bag so that can give u a idea of how roomy the bag is. The downside to the bag is just what other reviews have been saying the magnetic clamp doesn't stay closed at all. I had to bring the bag to a leather shop and add to straps on the flap so i know the bag would always be closed. Besides that problem which LL Bean needs to fix the bag would be flawless.

I echo the views of another reviewer who criticized the magnetic clasp used for the top closure. In every other respect a well made and attractive product. Please do yourself and all of us customers a favor by replacing the magnetic clasp with one that holds firm when engaged. Without this major flaw, the product would earn a top rating.

If you looking for a beautiful leather rucksack, great leather quality and detailing this bag may be of interest to you. Certainly the price it is being offered at compared to other luxury leather rucksacks stands out. Unfortunately, I found some drawbacks that were problematic. First, and most important is that the magnetic clasp for the top compartment wasn't strong enough to stay closed. I loaded the pack up with a Mac Book Air, (nice separate compartment for the computer) some cables, and some files and some reference material (loaded but not "stuffed") and I found that the clasp would not stay closed causing the pack to droop greatly on my back. A quick-release plastic or metal snap-clip would do the trick and could be hidden under the flap.
The other problem I found was the weight. While I can appreciate the quality of the leather producing weight the pack comes in at a few ounces shy of 5 lbs, quite heavy when you compare it to the Mulholland Brothers version at slightly over 2 lbs. Unfortunately, I ended up returning the pack to go with an alternate product that avoided these problems.
I'm sure L.L. Bean will continue to improve on this product in the future.

I wanted a 'heavy leather' backpack with good finish, quality construction and no shortcuts. That's exactly what I got. Its got the features you'd expect to get for an expensive piece. On the back of my Harley, on the train or anywhere I take it, its got a lot of style. I've seen pieces that are far from this quality and costs as much or more. I'm buying the other pieces of the same line
