I finally have just the bag I want. It is top notch quality, the perfect size for two nights, really attractive, durable, very well made zippers, functional with the exterior pockets, and, honestly, not cheap. I have purchased 7 other bags in the past, some from LL, but this is by far the best design and size - the shoe pocket is unique. This will last forever, and I am extremely pleased to have found it.

We bought this for our son for Christmas. He requested a vintage looking, leather duffel bag and this seemed to fit the bill. He is very impressed with the bag. His only complaint is that it would have been nicer in a bit larger size to carry more, and still fit in the airplane overhead.

I have not had this duffle very long and have only used it once so far but I can tell you the quality of this bag is superior to any other leather duffle that I've owned, very soft and supple leather, high quality zippers and pulls. If there were any drawbacks it would be that the magnets that hold the outside pocket flap closed and the one for the main compartment closure could be a little more "magnetized", this in no way detracts from this duffle though because these magnet closures are not really even needed but its a nice option to have. I wish I would have found this bag sooner because of the $ wasted on others of far less quality, this will be the only duffle that I will ever own from now on.

Right off the bat let me say that overall this is a fantastic bag. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is for some minor design flaws/preferences that may or may not be of concern to most buyers. For the price of this bag, however, I think it's fair to point them out.
This bag is so stylish it hurts. If you value quality luggage and don't mind paying a premium for such a classic item you will not regret it. Walk into work/airport/hotel with this slung on your shoulder and you realize you are immediately on another level. You will get compliments on it regularly. If you want techy fabrics with pouches, straps, carabiners and flashy colors you are in the wrong place. This is a rugged classy bag purpose-built for a man. You will have it for life as probably will the person that inherits it from you. Well thought out size, top opening feature is distinctly convenient, just enough pockets and storage without overdoing it, quality constructed and comfortable to carry. I cannot overstate how classy this bag is when in use. This is the type of bag carried by serious people.
THE NOT SO GOOD:
Pricey - no doubt about it. If you are looking at this bag and can afford it, it is an easy decision to buy. If you are on the fence and not sure a 'gym' bag is worth $350, I don't blame you, and I would advise you take a close look at the canvas version which I think is a great value alternative.
Magnet Closures - they confuse me. I get the idea but they are not executed well, especially with such stiff leather. The flaps, well, flap around; and only in the fully packed condition do they work as designed. It might get better with more break-in but that could take years (decades?). Button snaps or hook closures would serve the purpose better, or honestly, remove the flaps altogether (pending zipper issue, below).
Pouch Zippers - there should be 2 per pouch instead of 1 per pouch. To be fair, the shoe pouch actually has 2 zippers, which work brilliantly, however, this pouch is the least likely to actually need the 2 zippers because it is used infrequently. If the rear and side pouches had 2 zippers items would not fall out of them (the magnets don't really hold things in) and you could get rid of the magnet flaps all together. I mean, seriously LL Bean, shorting us 2 zippers on a $350 bag? I bet you get this right on the next version.
Pouch Orientation - I know this is picky but as soon as you sling this bag on you will know exactly what I mean. If you are right handed your preference is to carry the bag on your right, strong side, shoulder. To do this comfortably the side pouch needs to face out so as not to be against your hip and make it very uncomfortable to walk (think airport scramble). In that orientation, the shoe pouch is facing forward for easy access and the small rear pouch, where you are likely to be storing needed small items, is facing toward your rear. This is backwards to what it should be and inconvenient (unless of course you are left handed, in that case, it is perfect). For example, I never need to grab a pair of shoes while on the move, but an iPod or plane tickets or snacks? Definitely. Secondly, if the small pouch is behind you it is hard to keep an eye on all the time and there is the potential for someone to open it up and remove any of these items without knowing.
As I mentioned previously, this is a very classy, distinctive and timeless bag. It grows on me every time I pick it up. It is pricey but it reeks of quality and style. After owning this, or even holding it in the store, you will never look at luggage the same way.

Rated 5 out of 5 by MuskyGuide Value for the Money--Exceeds Expectations
I purchased the Rangeley Leather Duffle because my other carry-on slightly exceeded the specifications of some Vancouver, B.C.-bound aircraft. The wheels and one hand strap pushed the limit.
Another factor made me opt for leather: My other carry-on, made of tough canvas, has begun to tear along the seams. And the wheels have lost their "tires." Usable, but strained after 15 years' fidelity.
If I remember correctly, the Rangeley Leather Duffle is billed as it should be--a weekender, 2-3 days.
But I packed *four* days' worth of business formal attire!
Yes, *four* days of business formal attire.
The items included a paperback book, a Kindle HD, its charger and one for my smart phone, toiletries, meds, over-the-calf stockings, briefs and tees, ties, a second pair of size 12 shoes, four shirts, and *two* suits!
Wrinkle free, the shirts and suits, I might add.
Except for the suits, all other articles were rolled tightly and held in place with rubber bands. The suits were layered.
Not only is the Rangeley Leather Duffle value for the money, it exceeds expectations.
And sure to please other air travelers.

If you are even considering buying this bag, do it! You will not be disappointed. I thought about buying this duffle for a while before I went ahead and purchased it. It is a bit on the pricy side, but well worth it. The leather feels great and the bag is clearly made with a lot of forethought and quality. I have no doubt that I will have this bag for the rest of my life. I also bought the matching briefcase and couldn?t be happier with it either.

Rated 3 out of 5 by EventHorizon Hopefully overtime it will wear in?
I have had my eye on this duffle for some time. When I bought it I knew what to expect in part. For instance it is clearly fashioned out of pigskin which is not necessarily a bad thing as pigskin is more durable than some other leathers. However pigskin is still considered a ?lesser? leather and as such is considerably less expensive than other leathers. I wanted durability though and thought pigskin could be a good choice. Upon receiving this bag this is my impression. The zippers are heavy duty but ?catch? easily especially when trying to open the main compartment. I have to hope that with time they will wear in and become smoother because right now as it is, they are simply annoying. The magnets on the flaps do not work well but I assume that as the leather becomes more pliable with time the magnets will do a better job at holding the flaps closed. The magnets really serve no practical purpose that I can tell and seem more intended to keep the flaps closed for ascetic reasons. I personally think heavy duty buttons would have been a better choice.
I think this bag is heirloom quality in that it will potentially last (several?) lifetimes with care. I just think the idea of that is really cool. Imagine a family member saying, ?This was your (great?) Grandfather?s leather bag or coat??
In the end I think this bag will do as intended, which is to hold up to whatever is thrown at it or whatever it is thrown at. Hopefully it will see Tibet, Africa, space? you never know. I just think that for the price we could have done a little better with things like the zippers and magnets LLBean?
