LouisianaKingfish Ultimate Cargo Shorts
These probably are as close to the ultimate cargo shorts one can get with durable cloth and plenty of pockets for functional use in carrying personal items. I bought several pairs. I, too, desire velcro pockets instead of buttoned pockets since one can achieve speedy access with less difficulty using velcro pockets that are as secure as button pockets. It takes too long and is tiresome to always button and unbutton the pockets that present a challenge when driving or walking. The other negative is the heavy weight of the shorts. The material is durable and ruggged, but also is too heavy. Its a trade off. You really know that you are wearing these boogers with their weight. The upside, though, is that the material is very durable and rugged for long wear.

The buttons on these shorts are of poor quality. First time wearing the waist button popped. The webbing between the holes cracked.

The cargo pockets of these and the light weight shorts are all but useless because the buttons are impossible to secure and release. I don't understand why they don't use velcro so pockets could be used quickly.
These are beautifully made garments but this needs correcting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by VWtriguy No Button problems
Bought a pair about 5 weeks ago and wore them a lot on vacation in Florida - all sorts of activities and NO button problem. I see the reviews that cite this are all dated 2012. Has LLBean upgraded as a result? Buy with confidence...

Rated 5 out of 5 by Shikantaza Fabulous, but a little gotcha...
I got a pair of the Allagash shorts in loden (dark khaki brown/green) and I love 'em. The fit is great, and they appear to be pretty rugged.
The gotcha: as I was getting out of my truck this morning, the waist button popped. Not the thread, but the webbing between the holes blew out. (Note to LL: use stouter buttons!)

Rated 4 out of 5 by ShoestringBay Comfortable but big
Just received my shorts, found them:
-comfortable and heavy fabric
-plenty of pockets
-room for iPhone
-BUT THEY ARE WAY TO BIG ! I am a true 34 waist, I ordered a 33 and they are huge. Back they go for an exchange. I notified LL Bean, .....vanity sizing for men?

Rated 3 out of 5 by mwfromva A little short...
I'm 6'3" and I'm used to my cargo shorts coming down to my knee. These don't quite make it. I really would like to see LLBean make some shorts with a little more than a 10" inseam as these don't quite make it. They're really nice shorts, they just...come up short.

Rated 5 out of 5 by justuskids3 GREAT SHORTS!
I bought a few different styles of cargo shorts for my husband for the summer. These were his favorite, by far. He loved the fit and style. I wish they came in more colors!

Rated 1 out of 5 by Healdsburger A rare lemon from Bean
Bought these shorts at an end-of-season sale, and ended up not wearing them for several months. The third time I wore them, the waist button broke. The thread was fine, but the middle of the button snapped clean through. We sewed on the supplied spare button, and it also broke within two wearings. I was not engaged in any strenuous activity; I was sitting at a table. The shorts fit fine, though I agree with other reviewers that the fabric is a bit heavy for a warm California summer. I would also prefer Velcro closures over buttons-beneath-flaps for the cargo pockets; you need two hands to get the flaps open. I returned them as defective.

Rated 3 out of 5 by DaveTheNerd Heavy but functional, buttons constantly break
I have 3 pairs of these shorts. They're definitely functional, and I like the safety of the zipper pockets for my billfold and any small items I don't want to lose.
However, these shorts are VERY heavy (ridiculously so), and I also find that the front buttons are very cheap. Every single pair I've had I've popped the button off of, and not while bending or stretching them, but just standing. The thread remains in tact (!!) but the middle of the button just crumbles and falls off. I'd love to love these, but... too heavy and bad buttons.
