Nicely crafted. Simple design, perfect. I do not get to fish a lot so when I do I need to be able to assemble my equipment and get fishing fast. I need reliable equipment and this and the 6'10" pocket water rod fit the bill.

I was looking for a simple click and pawl reel for Midwestern trout fishing and, when I found this on sale, I snapped it up. For years I've used several drag reels for trout--and over those years never had to use the drag (beyond the minimum setting). I palm the reel when I have caught a bigger trout. This is all I need. I can't speak yet about the durability of the reel, but the design, weight, and function are perfect.

Perfect match in size and weight for my 6'10" Pocket Water Rod. Drag has low inertia to protect light tippet. Love that sound when a larger fish runs.

You cannot go wrong with this reel for majority of trout fishing situations that require a size 4 line or smaller.
It changes from left to right-hand retrieve very easily and has an externally-adjustable drag, if you want to use.
I am very impressed with the quality, performance and look of this reel, especially for the price.

Rated 3 out of 5 by ttc413 had to return
After fishing for the first time for less than an hour the reel developed a very bad wobble where the spool moved so much that the flange was rubbing against the housing. I called Bean and after describing the problem to several, increasingly informed customer service people, I was sent a new one and a label for free return of the defective reel. So a typical Bean review of a defective product, unhappy with the defect but very satisfied with the service.
BTW the replacement is working fine with only one flaw, I have yet to catch a fish!

The perfect little reel for getting into the small streams and brooks around my home. I love the old school sound of the click and pawl.

Rated 1 out of 5 by jamesb drag broke on first trip
put this on a a 6'6" 3wt fiberglass rod and took it to the smokies for trout. worked great for a day, then the drag broke 2nd day out. the metal tension bar bent so the pawl would not engage the spool. also, the clip that attached the tension bar to the drag knob snapped. great looking reel and good balance for the rod, but that's not good enough. customer service was subperb, however.

Rated 5 out of 5 by flyman1861 Beautiful reel, but need more size options than #1
Spring and Pawl design in machined aluminum is great. Well designed and manufactured. My only disappointment is that the only size offered is the #1. For my purposes, I prefer a larger reel allowing me to load the reel with a minimum of 100 yards of backing with a WF4 line and a size larger than that for WF6 + minimum of 100 yards of backing. I bought two of the #1 reels and will be returning them due to size. As soon as LL Bean comes out with the larger sizes I will be buying at least two of them. If the smaller size works for others, then I highly recommend. Otherwise, wait for the larger sizes to be offered, then be sure to buy some of these reels. The only improvement I could suggest is to increase the "overhang" or "lip" of the spool to give me something to grab when removing the spool. Otherwise, the reel really seems to be perfect. Good job LL Bean.

Rated 5 out of 5 by TeddyBear76 A Great Click and Pawl
It is very refreshing that LL Bean has chosen to bring back the click and pawl reel. For smaller rods and lines, and fishing smaller waters, it's an historical moment when one has needed a disc drag. Additionally, a click and pawl does a better job of balancing smaller rods.
At 3.9 ounces, the reel balances well with my 7 to 7.5 foot rods perfectly. The reel is accurately rated for 3-5 weight. I loaded it with a DT 4 weight and a small amount of 20lb backing. I strongly suspect there wouldn't be enough room for DT 5, but WF 5 would be no problem.
For some, the click may be annoying, but I found it enjoyable. It harkons to the days of glass and boo.
Now, if only LL Bean would bring back the fiberglass rod. Then we might have the ultimate pocket water combination.
