I really wanted to like these shorts (in Madras). They looked so cute on the website, and when I received them I liked the look and softness of the fabric. And then I put them on. The waist fit nicely, but there is too much fabric in the hips and the pockets stick out. This creates a really unattractive, unflattering flair at the hips. I read this complaint in another review but thought these shorts might work for me because I am wider in the hips than the waist. Alas, they did not. I am returning them.

Nice plaid. The waist was small for a size 14. I usually order a 12/14, or L, depending. I kept them anyways, but would definitely order up due to waist.

I love these shorts! These were one of my first purchases from LL Bean and I swear I have worn them as much as I can already (I have only had them since the end of June) I wear them as fast as I wash them. VERY comfortable and adorable in pink. These have been great with the unusually hot summer we have had.

I ordered these in oxford cloth and I am very happy with them. They are well made and true to size. The fabric is great for the hot summer we are having. My only complaint is is that they are a bit too long for short people like me and I had to have them taken up. I usually get petites but they were not available in this particular style.

These are very nice shorts however the hip seam is sewn so that the hip area where the pocket lies juts out enough that I had to put them on my sewing machine to correct the problem. A size smaller would not have fit so this was my only solution.
Other than that the size 8 was a true size 8.

I normally where a 10-12 but I've reordered these in an 8 as I probably had an extra 3-4 inches too much in the waist. That being said, I loved the material and overall I hope the new size works.

I consider myself slightly overweight, but to my dismay find that the LL Bean sizes are quite a bit too big in general. These shorts and an almost identical pair that I bought last year fit very nicely from the hips down, but the waist was 4 or 5 inches too big, although size 14 fit perfectly otherwise. From the picture of the shorts on a model it looks as though they are meant to sit at the waist, which is what I wanted. It also looks as though the waist tapers up from the hips across the top of the pockets. However, I had to take these shorts to a dress maker, who had to open the waist band and significantly taper the back. I am not thin and need size 14 to be loose over the hips.

I ordered these shorts in the pink madras plaid, and they fit like a dream. The madras plaid colors are soft; not too loud at all in faded blues and pink/washed reds. I'm 5'8" tall and the shorts hit me just above the knee -- nice length for a middle-aged lady like me. Will wear them with a tank and light cardigan.

GOOD: Colors worked well together in the blue plaid pattern, nice lightweight fabric, good for warmer climates. Excellent matching of plaid lines at front and back seams, good fastenings. Good rise in back half of short. BAD: The side-seam matches on the plaid lines were awful. One side off by about 1/2 inch, the other off by at least an inch. Made the shorts look very cheap. The short sits lower on the waist, but I found the front rise "off". I got a large pocket of fabric below the zipper anytime I didn't stand perfectly straight. Almost like the spec allowed extra room to fit a male.
