Rated 5 out of 5 by awegner my take on the sizing issue
I have wanted these boots for a year but always backed away after reading reviews about sizing--they really seem to vary with some people wearing their size while others wear 1/2 to 1 size smaller than normal. The average seemed to be a half size, but I wear a whole size so that didn't help. So, here is my experience:
I wear a true woman's 9m in most shoes--though one foot is a little smaller. Against my gut feeling I ordered an 8 in these boots. I have tried them on with a variety of sock--right up to my thick Bean Cresta wool socks--and surprisingly they fit perfectly! I am very pleased with them.
So long story short--for this reviewer, ordering a WHOLE SIZE smaller worked. Even with thick socks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by trentintx Greatest boot purchase I've made to date!
I absolutely adore these boots: they're comfortable, great for cold and wet weather, the color of the leather is stunning + the red soles provide a really nice contrast. I opted for this style of Bean Boot because I live in north Texas, so insulation isn't as necessary as waterproofing, plus I liked the appearance of the bison leather. The boots held up perfectly when we had a patch of cold and icy weather last December, but thick socks were definitely necessary for warmth.
Pay heed to the sizing warnings, you WILL want at least a 1/2 size smaller, unless you plan to wear 3+ pairs of thick socks all at once.
100% recommend this boot to anyone considering a purchase. I only regret living in too hot a climate to wear them weekly. But when it rains, I reach for these and am totally set. :)

I have another pair of Bean Boots so I knew they'd be comfortable but these are also beautiful and classic looking. Price is good, quality is outstanding and for a kicker the brick red soles give some style and punch! All that said I am in my 60's so not really a style princess. The leather is comfortable and most importantly my feet are DRY

I love the boots. Worth the wait. LL Bean advised upfront that the boots were backordered so I knew I had to wait. Well worth the wait... great boots. Fit exactly to size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by OneLuckyOne Bison boots = dry feet, but sizing is tricky
I bought these to wear while walking my dog during wet spring weather. As recommended by the friendly folks at LL Bean and the reviews, I ordered a size down (I wear a 9 and ordered an 8). I waited nearly 2 months for my boots, since they were backordered. I was so excited when they arrived and was sadly disappointed that they were too small. I tried them on with smartwool socks - I could get them on, but my toe was right up at the end. Even barefooted, they would have been too small. I was able to get a size 9 with only a week's wait. They are PERFECT. I've worn them with smarwool socks as well as cotton socks.
As noted by other reviewers, they are not an easy slip on/off because the tongue is stitched all the way to the opening. It's not awful, but not easily done while standing in the parking lot. The advantage, however, is that they are perfectly waterproof right up to the top, and I've tested this while walking on spring-flooded trails by the river.
I love the brown color and the orangey red soles add some style to what are otherwise truly functional boots. They are as comfortable as a boot of this sort can be. The leather is reasonably soft and I hope that it will soften more with wear. That said, I've walked miles in them right out of the box.

Bought these because american made. Why spend this much money to buy shoes made in country that doesn't like us? Turned out to be most comfortable boots I ever owned. As a horse owner, I have had alot of different brands of all price ranges. Use them to muck horse and goat stalls, garden, muck in woods with kids. Spray off with hose and they are clean for running errands on rainy days. Love these boots. Would buy again and will buy for my 3 girls.

These boots are great. While they are a little tough to get on at first- the tongue is attached on both sides- they are very comfortable. I recently wore them on a rainy night and danced the night away with no discomfort. They are also grippy on the bottom so no slipping and sliding in inclement weather. They look great and feel great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by toandfro On my second pair and loving them!
I recognize that each foot is different but lets call mine "average". Average in shape, width and use. That being said, I absolutely could not be happier with these boots. I knew I was instantly satisfied with the fit on my first pair (purchased three years ago) but I'd forgotten how wonderful they felt right out of the box until I put my new pair on a few days ago. I wear them with a mid-weight merino wool sock and nylon liner comfortably all day for days on end. The size was what I expected and my feet stay dry when tromping through shin-high grass every morning at work. I actually started wearing these as an everyday shoe for all types of activities and the chain-link soul pattern has been stable on every surface I've worked on from concrete to mud to a hot tin roof. I've even done a few hiking trips in them. I'm already thinking of buying another pair so I can have one for work and one for play. The only breaking-in needed is the tongue and, as long as you treat the leather with a conditioner, that shouldn't take more than two or three days of wearing them a few hours at a time. I wanted something I could slip on quickly and I had ordered a pair of the rubber mocs but the smallest size was still too loose so I exchanged them for a pair of the gum shoes since they lace up. Those fit great and I'm happy with them but I can't wear them all day because the top of the boot lands right on the ball of my ankle so I find that I still grab my 8" boots no matter how quick/short a trip I make. I am on my feet all day so I put gel inserts in and haven't had any problems. With other boots the first thing I'd do at the end of the day was tear them off my feet. Not these. I've noticed myself wearing them until I get ready for bed! I highly recommend these boots. I don't typically order "fit-specific" items online but with L.L. Beans return/exchange policy I decided to give it a try and I'm sure glad I did.
