I am also replacing an old version of this coat- which I love dearly. It has just gotten too grubby to wear in public anymore. This one is definitely less well made- no mesh vents, no interior drawstring, the lining isn't all wool so it's much bulkier. And and the exterior fabric is no where near as nice- much noisier, more plastic and wrinkles more. The other stuffed in overhead bins and came out just fine. This one I'm not so sure. And they changed the length of the lining as well as the way the zipper runs so I can't use my old lining :-(
So maybe if you've never had one of these coats before you'll like it. but for me, it's just a shadow of it's former self. It is still a nice long coat with a zip out lining.

This is a nice, long coat that will keep you dry well below the knees. It has a thin wool lining that will be good on cool/cold days, not sure if it is warm enough for -15F though. I would think not for me. Otherwise, it is roomy enough for an extra sweater underneath and it is very comfortable. I like the accent belt in the back because it gives it a little shape. This coat is great for walking the dogs in the rain. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Rated 2 out of 5áby JanB49 So disappointing compared to prior versions
My old version of this coat is too big for me now so I thought I'd treat myself to a new, smaller one. I read the negative reviews before purchasing, but was not deterred. Sadly, the negative reviews are accurate. This coat is a very dumbed-down version of its older self. The old funnel collar that zipped up to the chin has been replaced by a spread collar that zips only up to the collarbone, and there is no button tab on the collar to allow it to be turned up and closed. The liner is thinner, and the sleeves of the liner have no insulation whatsoever--the old one had insulated sleeves in the liner. The old one had a very attractive cape back; the new one has a flat back with a strange half-"belt" insert with the ugliest plastic button trim I've ever seen. The old hood had a visor--very helpful in wet weather. The new hood lacks a visor, so if you don't have an umbrella, your face will be rained on. The old fabric had a sueded feel; the new one has a slick plastic feel. Even the pockets on the new one are less commodious. All in all, a huge disappointment for this life-long Bean fan. It's been returned. Instead of putting expense into useless items like that half-belt in back, Bean should bring back a functional raincoat.

Rated 1 out of 5áby CCCSLP I hate this coat!!!!!
This is the third of these coats that I have owned. The best was the first one that had a gusset in the back and quality snaps. When it wore out, I ordered a green one. It comes unsnapped periodically and is no longer water repellent. So, I ordered this coat last spring (full price) in mallard blue knowing I was getting a quality coat. Boy, was I mistaken! The sleeve snaps don't stay snapped. The front snaps don't stay snapped. When I zip it? The zipper opens from the bottom as I zip it up. I wish I had my old red one back. The first model of this coat was worth it. This model is awful!

Rated 3 out of 5áby Ohmmoose No way this coat is suitable in -15 weather
I bought this coat for cold Nebraska fall days. I was a bit dubious about the comfort rating of -15, but bought the coat because I needed something warm and dry. I have a non-lined version of this coat that I bought several years ago. Like many other reviewers, I like the old version better.
While well made, the lining is only insulated on the top. The arms are only lined, not insulated. From the waist down the lining changes from a quilted puffy insulating material to a single layer of what appears to be suiting weight wool or similar material.
I wore this coat to work this morning, it was 25 and no wind. From the short walk from my car to the office my arms were getting cold. I cannot imagine that this coat will offer much in the way of warmth/protection in a bad storm/strong wind or bitter winter cold.
I'm keeping it, and give it a rating of 3 stars, as it will suffice as an early fall raincoat. But I would ask LL Bean to reconsider their comfort rating of -15, as I feel it is extremely inaccurate and misleading. If you are looking for a warm winter coat, this isn't it.
I've been a fan of LL Bean outerwear for years. I have a down filled coat I've had for 13 years that is still in good shape, despite being worn daily during the winter, but it seems as if their quality is slipping in recent years.

Rated 5 out of 5áby kegrev Excellent Stylish Coat for Rainy Climates
I live in the Pacific Northwest Coast of Canada, and like to walk and take public transit so I was looking for a great water proof coat that was also warm and yet stylish. I loved this coat from the outset. The material has a great texture, and is lightweight with a handy hood. I like to pair it with a gortex hat. The beautiful wool lining of this coat zips in so can be optional depending on the temperatures. I am able to wear it until the bitterest cold days. But best of all, it has proven to be 100% waterproof even in the heaviest of downpours. I've had it for three years now and it's still going strong. Did I mention you can take the lining out and wash it in the washer!! Just a fabulous addition to your outerwear

The coat feels like is more vinyl. It might be a good coat for rain but it looks cheap and not worth the $215 I paid for it. I expected more from LL Bean.

Rated 3 out of 5áby fuschia13 It used to be the perfect raincoat
I'm writing this review with the hope that the perfect raincoat will come back. The new version is fine, but most of the changes make me miss my old coat. The old coat's high collar worked very well with the hood, was stylish, and comfortable--the new shirt collar style flips up when the hood is up and doesn't stay down well at other times either--very annoying. The hood design on the old coat had more of a bill definition and stayed on well due to the high collar w/o having to use the closure ties--the new hood is not as nice. The old coat had nice deep pockets with a pocket opening that closed in on itself so it was harder for items to fall out--the new coat pockets are much shallower and the pocket isn't as low profile on the lines of the coat. I even preferred the original back--the coat hung nicely and was roomier for wearing blazers and bulky sweaters underneath. The zipper on my new coat doesn't work as well and doesn't seem to be as high of quality as the zipper on my old coat. I'm pleased the hidden pocket inside still exists, but the glasses pocket is gone which is something I also used on the old coat. My hope is that by the time I need a new raincoat many of the features of the old raincoat will have reappeared.

Rated 2 out of 5áby TexasJayhawk2 Bring Back the Old Version of This Raincoat
The raincoat arrived yesterday afternoon so I have only had time to try it on and look it over. It fits well, and I like the color, mallard teal. The price was right. It was on sale, I got an additional 15% discount because I have the LL Bean Visa card and a $10 gift card went with this purchase. If I had not got such a good price and if I knew where to buy a better raincoat, this one would be on its way back to LL Bean.
The reason for my dissatisfaction is I bought two of these coats in 1997. One was the mesh-lined version and the other has the wool zipped lining. I would give both of those coats five plus stars. After 16 years and many trips through the washing machine, the coats no longer repel rain. Otherwise they look like new. As noted in other reviews, so many details have been changed that cheapen the new coat. It is still the fine H2Off fabric and they are still made in Thialand but the stitching is not of the same quality. The seams pucker. The zip out lining is much thinner and the sleeves are not insulated. There are no buttons sewn on the inside cuff to hold the lining sleeves in place. The large collar does not work with the hood. The cute little bill on the hood that keeps the rain off my face is gone. The old coat with the lining had a caplet effect that was not sewn down in the back. The upper back of the nylon lining of the old coat was mesh so some air could get into the coat while the insulated zip lining still keeps me warm. There is no ventilation in the new coat and I am afraid under very humid conditions the inside of the coat will get much too steamy.
The snaps on the new coat are hidden inside the placket on the front of the coat. This makes it difficult to quickly close the coat. The zipper pulls and fasteners on the hood drawstring are of much lower quality. The big button snaps on the sleeves, at the neck and at the little belt on the back are ugly. There is a very small vent at the bottom back of the coat. The old coats had an inverted pleat on the back of the coat that went from the bottom to the caplet. This gave the coat a fullness that made it easier to climb steps.
Contrary to some of the other reviews the new coat does have a zippered inner pocket. All I can add is my wish that LL Bean will heed the comments and bring back the quality raincoat of old. Its styling was timeless and so functional.

I am 5'9" and an XL. the length and size is great. I was very waterproof in a freezing rain while watching soccer. My arms were a little chilly, but not bad. Hangs just over rainboot length so I was completely dry. Very Happy!
