Excellent Gore-tex value. Stow-away-hood, knee length, perfect fit (small) and great for the climate I am visiting in the British Isles. Love the extra pockets and the ease of zipper use. I ordered the black and it feels as though I am wearing a very light weight dressy top coat.

LLB sent me the new raincoat about a week ago. It was exactly what I ordered. Unfortunately, for the last 15 years I have had the predecessor of this raincoat -- a Goretex coated rain coat.
What I noticed immediately about the new one was that the quality of workmanship was dramatically worse. The zipper was cheapened into a single movement from an two way opener that my old raincoat had. The stitching of the new one was really inferior: double stitching replaced with single stitching; much larger stitches on the the new one.
I think that the price of my new raincoat was not very much more than what I paid for the old one about 15 years ago. Clearly LLB cheapened the product to maintain price. I definitely would have preferred to pay considerably more to get a top quality product.

I live in Alaska and use the this raincoat for wilderness hiking ......where my life may be dependent on my raincoat. I wear out one Gore-Tex raincoat every year. I have purchased quite a few of these raincoats from LLBean over the years. A knee length raincoat offers better protection than standard waist length raincoats. LLBean is the only company I know of that currently offers a knee length Gore-Tex rain coat. They have been doing so for at least 20 years. The current raincoat is generally well made but they have one serious design flaw and that is with the front zipper. Years ago, these LLBean raincoats were perfect. Then someone got the bright idea that they should monkey with the zipper design - maybe to save a couple of bucks on manufacturing costs. They redesigned the zipper so that it is too short and it has only a one-way slider.....the end result is that you can't seal up the front of the raincoat all the way to the bottom when needed. Another change is that they put the "storm baffle" underneath the zipper (instead of on the top side of the zipper like Helly Hansen and most other raincoat manufacturers would do) which makes the zipper less waterproof in driving rain. They deleted most of the snaps on the outer storm flap and replaced them with Velcro........ at intervals that are now too far apart.
In recent years, I have had to install snaps in between the existing Velcro on the front zipper closure. Then I have to sew an additional 10-inch long zipper underneath the existing zipper.... so that I can close up the front of the raincoat all the way to the bottom during high winds and driven rain.
LLBean, why don't you fix the front closure on this raincoat and be done with it? Then this would be a good back packing raincoat.

I have had a Stowaway raincoat for many years. It has served me very well. Although, over time, the Gore-Tex wears down and becomes less effective. Perhaps newer versions of the technology will yield better. I just purchased a Stowaway raincoat and noticed a couple of things that have changed since my original purchase. It seems the overall length is slightly shorter, and the hand-pocket placement has been changed. I like the old version pockets much better. They are in a more practical place, they are oriented more vertical which is better for holding items, and the flaps over the top are better. Needless to say, I don't like the newer version pockets. For me, this is an important feature as I carry things in them.

My husband loves this coat. He walks during his lunch hour; we live in the wet, messy Pacific NW. This jacket is keeping him very warm, dry and comfortable on his walks. He happily tells everyone where he got his coat. Thank you for another great item!

Rated 2 out of 5 by Robfoll Lack of a 2 way zipper is a big inconvenience!
I have had this raincoat for about 3 months, and I agree with other reviewers, the fact that there is not a 2 way zipper, is surprising, and extremely inconvenient. A real pain to get into the car, with a wet raincoat, and then have to unzip from the top down. Also, as another reviewer noted, the velcro gets in the way when you are trying to zip up. Not well designed for a fairly expensive item. Disappointed. Plan on returning.
