Rated 5 out of 5 by hikermomof3 Must have for winter hiking
These are great. I have used them on icy trails and hard packed snow trails. I feel very secure and safe. They are easy to put on and I like the extra Velcro strap across the foot. This was an excellent purchase for winter. I expect they will get a lot of use over the years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Hjalmer Even better than anticipated
I use the Hillsound Trail Compounds to hike and run off-road trails in the winter in MT. The crampons are outstanding. They work very well on trails with packed snow, ice and mud. They work equally well going uphill and downhill and do not move around on your shoes. I wear men sizes 12 to 12 1/2 and the XL crampon fits just fine. The quality appears to be even better than I had hoped after reading many positive reviews. I would not use them for running on icy hard surfaces (asphalt or concrete roadways). Another product with a shorter spike would probably be better. I have not used them in deep unpacked snow - snowshoes might be better for those conditions..

As you descend into the Grand Canyon in winter, the trail turns from snow, to solid ice, to rocky slush, to thick red mud. These crampons handled all those conditions with ease. I was worried the rubber would be too hard to get onto my boots in below-freezing temps, but they remained flexible enough to slip right onto my boots, even with my gloves on. Once secured they stayed put and didn't budge at all, which gave me the confidence to hike into the icy Grand Canyon with no fear of falling.
The first time I hiked down into the GC, I struggled with small instep crampons that kept sliding off my boots. When I finished my backpacking trip my legs were like jelly from the strain of trying to keep my footing on the ice.
The second time I backpacked the Grand Canyon in winter I had a pair of Hillshound crampons and they made an amazing difference. I walked up and down the icy trails like they were dry. The traction was perfect, and the spikes didn't pick up snow. After a while I didn't realize I had them on my feet, which is amazing on steep rugged trails like South Kaibab and Bright Angel in wintertime. There was no slip, no hot spots, and no drag. When I finished my hike my legs were fresh, like I had been hiking on an easy dry trail. I can't recommend these enough. I bought a separate storage pouch and store them off-season with a very thin layer of WD-40 coating to prevent rust.

Rated 5 out of 5 by TEsce Light weight, durable, and great value!
Used over the weekend to climb Big Slide in the Adirondacks and they worked great! Several in our party had the micro-spikes, and the trail crampons worked as good, if not better?and they are less expensive! I especially liked the Velcro strap. I would recommend to anyone for winter hiking/mountaineering!

L.L. Bean had the best price, was exactly as I ordered. Shipped and arrived exactly as promised. If you have weed eating or landscaping to do on an incline these crampons are a life saver. You should order a size smaller than the size chart recommends.

It is summer and of course I am not wearing the crampons while hiking!
The Hillsounds appear to be well-made and will be a good, snug fit over my winter shoes,
Thank you LL bean for offering this product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by CrazyForWinter A must have for winter hiking
My wife and I both have these Trail Crampons and absolutely love them. We take them on every winter hike. We bought these for my brother and his wife. These fit perfectly over winter boots, and the larger metal "spikes" are large enough to be very effective on both ice and crusty snow. Don't settle for the smaller spikes. These are worth the extra $$$. Sturdy construction and the rubber straps make for easy on & off. These fit true to size, although be careful if you wear larger boots with a thick sole or cleat. You may have to order the next larger size if you are borderline. Highly recommended!!

After buying a cheap pair of crampons that were lost during my first outing, I finally decided to bite the bullet and invest in a decent pair for local hikes (flat to moderately hilly terrain). I wanted a fairly inexpensive but quality pair, and these are exactly what I was looking for. I've had them on 3 outings so far and LOVE them. Very easy to put on--my size 7 was at the bottom of one size range (Small) and at the top of the other (Extra Small). Since my original pair had fallen off, I took the chance with the Extra Small, so I would have a secure fit. I do--but they were actually easier to put on than my first pair, which was obviously looser. Go figure. The fit is snug, and the rubber wide enough so that the top velcro strap that fits around it won't break it. The top strap is actually secured on one side with a metal loop, which sold two other hiking friends on replacing their old crampons with this set. A big thank you to all the other people who reviewed these, because it was your feedback that led me to purchase these, and I am very pleased!

We used these for the first time this weekend. We went snowshoeing but switched over to the crampons because the trails were well worn and ice in spots. They were easy to put on and take off and they worked really well. This sizes also seem to be pretty accurate to the shoes size. Good fit!!
