Rated 4 out of 5áby SpartanBeanShopper Great bag for a busy grad student
I have had this bag for about a month, and I really enjoy using it. I am a grad student and having my laptop, phone, lunch, keys, etc. with me during my daily commute is essential. The LL Bean Expedition Tote Bag helps to keep all of my things within reach.
I especially like the large pocket in the front of the bag. I usually store my keys, phone, gum, and other loose items in this large pocket. There is a smaller zippered pocket along the side, and this is where I put my identification card and/or small change. There is a daisy chain along the front of the bag, but I have not had the chance to attach a carabiner yet.
The feature that I really love about the bag is the material that it's constructed from. The material is thick, but not too heavy. It is very durable. The shoulder straps are padded as well, so it makes heavier loads easier to manage and not uncomfortable or painful. I bought both the Carbon and the Mariner Blue colors. I feel that the Carbon color is a more "professional" color and would recommend the color for office use.
Inside of the bag, there is a Velcro-secured compartment for a laptop. I have a 15" Dell XPS and it fits perfectly. I wish there was a key fob and smaller organization pockets inside, though. A small zippered compartment inside would be helpful.
There are also shoulder straps to convert the bag into a backpack, but I have not used this feature yet. I also have not take it onto an airplane, but I will soon.
Finally, there are two water bottle pockets-- one mesh and one that is elastic. I use one of the two pockets for my bottle of hand sanitizer and the other for my 32 oz. Nalgene water bottle. I'm so happy that my Nalgene fits perfectly into the elastic holder!
Overall, this is a wonderful and very practical bag for everyday use. It might help to make the bag a little less heavy, however. It does tend to get heavy if there are too many things inside. However, its large capacity--you can pack a change of clothes inside--more than makes up for its minor flaws.
This bag is great for grad students, busy professionals, people who have children or pets, or if you're planning on taking a road trip or a short vacation. I would highly recommend it.

The Expedition Tote Bag is wonderful! The quality of the product is top-notch. It is roomy, has a lot of pockets and is not bulky. I love that the top can be zipped,or just left open. I work in a school library and can carry plenty of books and supplies. When my daughter saw mine she requested one also. As a teacher, she too carries lots of papers, supplies, etc. I would highly recommend this product!!!

As a teacher I needed a large bag that would hold my laptop as well as piles of papers to grade and my lunch. This does the trick. It is in fact a bit too big, but it would be perfect for travel. My only problem with it is that it is not waterproof.

I was looking for something sturdy and large enough (but not too large) to carry back and forth to work. This fits my ultrabook, external disk player, purse, datebook and much more. It fits comfortably over my shoulder ( I am short) and distributes the weight well. I have been looking for quite some time and finally found just the right tote.

* I ordered this bag because it was convertible to a backpack. The straps must have been designed for a giant! The straps don't adjust to tighten to my shoulders and the bag hangs farther from my back than I would prefer. I thought that this would be a perfect bag for a biker, but it would flop all over.
* The shoulder pads on the backpack straps move constantly.
* The backpack straps seemed to have been an afterthought that wasn't thought through completely.
* They should have designed the bag with hooks inside for keys or mesh pockets on the inside. Things can get lost pretty easily.
* As other reviews have mentioned, the bag is HUGE. It is bigger than I expected, but have no complaints about that. I mainly use it as my gym bag, so I am able to carry my sneakers, gym clothes, my book, and another bag with smaller things in it (keys, wallet, etc.)

I love the bag. It gives me the versatility I want for commuting in a big city. However, there are two things I would change and these items were provided in earlier reviews. There has to be a better way for the padding on the back pack straps not to spin around and slide up and down and a neater way to tuck in the straps from the tote bag. I still love the space and can easily fit my laptop, lunch and anything else I might want into the bag.

I work as an ER nurse, I searched for a bag that could meet the needs of my work items as well as extra in the event of unplanned overtime. This tote is perfect! Comfortable to sling over one shoulder, easily fit everything I need and more. Accommodates my everyday needs and can still fit in a fleece jacket as needed for colder days.
I used travel zip pouches to organize the inside so there wasn't a bunch of loose items to dig through. It handles my many pens, stethoscope, gadgets etc as well as many personal toiletries so I can stay prepared for anything. Even on its fullest day, with extra clothes etc, it remains very easy to handle/carry. I've never used it as a backpack truth is, the shoulder strap is plenty big to disperse the weight of it comfortably.
I have also used this as my carryon when flying. iPads, chargers, snacks, books, my purse, etc, all fits under the seat without any issue.
My bag is orange, I love it! I get many compliments on it also.
Well worth the money!!

Rated 5 out of 5áby Madhatter61 Terrific travel tote!
I ordered this bag about a month before a planned trip and was disappointed that it was on back order. The excellent folks in Customer Service worked some magic, however, and my bag was delivered the day before my departure. It was even better than I expected. It held my purse, computer, cosmetics, medications, jewelry, reading material, and travel documents. All were easy to retrieve, as needed. It's lightweight and attractive--from now on, my travel tote of choice.

I'm writing this review based only on looks since it arrived late and I didn't get to use it yet for a trip. It's bigger than any of my other carry-on bags, just what I was looking for. Now I have to hope it will be accepted on to a plane and fits under a seat. It's plenty roomy and I'm expecting to pack a lot into it. It's a sturdy bag, good color, don't know if I'll use the back straps - if not, they just get in the way and I may cut them off. So overall, I'm very pleased with the bag and that's before I've even used it.

Rated 4 out of 5 Just as expected
Even way before I decided to order this item, I've always intended for this bag to be a traveling 'helper' for me, my husband & our twin boys (now 3 y/o). I'm going to try and make this review quick and clear.
+++ Plentiful capacity, color (I have the orange one), sturdy and high quality material, good quality on each and all of the stitching. This is going to be a great travel gear!
--- Way too large for my 5'2" frame, the backpack straps sit funny on me but I think it's mainly because I'm short?, 1 zipper pull (instead of 2) for the main compartment, no zipper at all on the large front pocket.
The few cons I wrote is either subjective and/or could easily be fixed or altered. Overall I love this bag, it's just as I had expected it to be. Thanks LL Bean! This was my first LL Bean item ever and i' won't stop here!
