I was looking for at tote bag to be an airplane carry on that would accommodate the items I usually carry on. This bag does that plus has the nap sack straps to use for other purposes as well. I look forward to many good years of service from this bag.

I am not into camping and back packs. I like this tote bag because it is softly padded and large enough to put a 17" laptop. This is perfect for my business travel through airports. The laptop is somewhat protected and waterproofed because of the padding and there is still room to put files and books and lunch. The side pockets for water bottles is always good to have, The zipper on top is also important to me and it slings on the shoulder real well. The extra straps I will never use but I understand with those you can strap it on your back.

I bought this bag for a cross-country flight and was able to fill it with everything I needed - and more - for the trip. There is a great slot for the computer and pockets for drinks and other doo-dads. It was nice not to have to carry two separate bags for technology and other items.

Rated 4 out of 5 by SpartanBeanShopper Great bag for a busy grad student
I have had this bag for about a month, and I really enjoy using it. I am a grad student and having my laptop, phone, lunch, keys, etc. with me during my daily commute is essential. The LL Bean Expedition Tote Bag helps to keep all of my things within reach.
I especially like the large pocket in the front of the bag. I usually store my keys, phone, gum, and other loose items in this large pocket. There is a smaller zippered pocket along the side, and this is where I put my identification card and/or small change. There is a daisy chain along the front of the bag, but I have not had the chance to attach a carabiner yet.
The feature that I really love about the bag is the material that it's constructed from. The material is thick, but not too heavy. It is very durable. The shoulder straps are padded as well, so it makes heavier loads easier to manage and not uncomfortable or painful. I bought both the Carbon and the Mariner Blue colors. I feel that the Carbon color is a more "professional" color and would recommend the color for office use.
Inside of the bag, there is a Velcro-secured compartment for a laptop. I have a 15" Dell XPS and it fits perfectly. I wish there was a key fob and smaller organization pockets inside, though. A small zippered compartment inside would be helpful.
There are also shoulder straps to convert the bag into a backpack, but I have not used this feature yet. I also have not take it onto an airplane, but I will soon.
Finally, there are two water bottle pockets-- one mesh and one that is elastic. I use one of the two pockets for my bottle of hand sanitizer and the other for my 32 oz. Nalgene water bottle. I'm so happy that my Nalgene fits perfectly into the elastic holder!
Overall, this is a wonderful and very practical bag for everyday use. It might help to make the bag a little less heavy, however. It does tend to get heavy if there are too many things inside. However, its large capacity--you can pack a change of clothes inside--more than makes up for its minor flaws.
This bag is great for grad students, busy professionals, people who have children or pets, or if you're planning on taking a road trip or a short vacation. I would highly recommend it.

The Expedition Tote Bag is wonderful! The quality of the product is top-notch. It is roomy, has a lot of pockets and is not bulky. I love that the top can be zipped,or just left open. I work in a school library and can carry plenty of books and supplies. When my daughter saw mine she requested one also. As a teacher, she too carries lots of papers, supplies, etc. I would highly recommend this product!!!

As a teacher I needed a large bag that would hold my laptop as well as piles of papers to grade and my lunch. This does the trick. It is in fact a bit too big, but it would be perfect for travel. My only problem with it is that it is not waterproof.

I was looking for something sturdy and large enough (but not too large) to carry back and forth to work. This fits my ultrabook, external disk player, purse, datebook and much more. It fits comfortably over my shoulder ( I am short) and distributes the weight well. I have been looking for quite some time and finally found just the right tote.

Rated 3 out of 5 by smp531 Poorly designed backpack
* I ordered this bag because it was convertible to a backpack. The straps must have been designed for a giant! The straps don't adjust to tighten to my shoulders and the bag hangs farther from my back than I would prefer. I thought that this would be a perfect bag for a biker, but it would flop all over.
* The shoulder pads on the backpack straps move constantly.
* The backpack straps seemed to have been an afterthought that wasn't thought through completely.
* They should have designed the bag with hooks inside for keys or mesh pockets on the inside. Things can get lost pretty easily.
* As other reviews have mentioned, the bag is HUGE. It is bigger than I expected, but have no complaints about that. I mainly use it as my gym bag, so I am able to carry my sneakers, gym clothes, my book, and another bag with smaller things in it (keys, wallet, etc.)

I love the bag. It gives me the versatility I want for commuting in a big city. However, there are two things I would change and these items were provided in earlier reviews. There has to be a better way for the padding on the back pack straps not to spin around and slide up and down and a neater way to tuck in the straps from the tote bag. I still love the space and can easily fit my laptop, lunch and anything else I might want into the bag.
