Rated 5 out of 5 by Finnishboy Follow-Up Review - 1 year later
I just returned from a 13 day Spring bear hunt(in a tent) on Kodiak Island, Alaska. The weather was wet(snow, sleet, rain), cold(25F - 40F) and windy(25-35 mph) 24/7. These boots performed excellent. My feet were warm and dry. The BOA lace system worked great. Normal laces would have been wet and frozen in that harsh environment. These boots took a beaten and still look great...with a little more character now. I highly recommend these to anyone who requires a serious hunting boot for extreme conditions.

these boots are better than I expected. just got them couple weeks ago, but I have worn them several hours in & outside. no breaking in or any other things some reviews said. feet did not sweat inside or walking. wearing mid weight socks.
I know I'm going to really like them. the BOA system and insulation is why I chose these boots. with some back problems it can be hard to tighten laces & tie.also with big loop in back it's easy to slip on. even the toes have extra outer protection. no question they will be great, and fit perfect thanks to the BEAN support people on phone. Thank you!

Rated 3 out of 5 by MinnDeerHunter Boots R great - Laces R not so good.
I hated giving these boots only 3 stars because the boots are dry, comfortable and warm enough. The laces, however, are not durable at all. I had my doubts about these "wind-up, non-replaceable" laces but LL Bean assured me that if anything went wrong I could have them replaced. Well, guess what....... the plastic coating on the steel cable laces started shreding and won't go into the winder anymore. If I try to force the winder tighter then the plastic shreds even more so the problem exacerbates.
I'm going to try to exchange the boots tomorrow for a different style with regular laces. If I don't write an addendum to this review within 5 days then you'll know that the exchange went well. I'll only add another review if things go south.

These boots are fantastic. I love the BOA Closure. Just got back from a pheasant hunting trip in IA and wasm extremely pleased with the performance of these boots. Feet stayed very very warm despite the temps being in the teens. Very sturdy on even terain. Feet never got tired and felt gret at night. Setting the BOA closures to the appropriate tightness is very easy and not having your shoes ever come untied or loose was wonderful.

Gotta say I've had these boots for a year, and they're pretty darn comfortable. Time will tell about the durability of the lacing system, but it works well, and is pretty easy to use. Not sure what a few of the reviewers don't like about the comfort, but it probably comes down to individual feet issues. Perhaps if you're sitting in a stand, or not moving around much, they might not be warm. But I really can't see that. I use them for snow shoeing among other things, and for me they're perfect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by GWSloan Great Boots!!
These are the first boots I have owned that had Thinsulate insulation, and I will never own hunting boots without it again. Very, very comfortable boots and the removable insoles are well padded. The lacing system is extremely easy to use.

2 hunting seasons in the snows and hills of central Montana. Absolutely great fit, dryness and warmth. No problems what so ever with them!

Rated 5 out of 5 by moonsurfer 5 stars for what they were designed to do
This is a boot that I chose as a compromise between $400 mountain hunting boots, and $100 "1-2 year throwaway" hunting "boots" that feel like athletic shoes with no break in period. It appears that LL Bean designed well, because at the $199 price point, it is an incredible value for being able to accommodate a wide range of hunting environments. The boot will not feel like the ~$100 boots that you find at a big box store - they have a much stiffer sole, which is useful for rugged terrain, but will feel awkward at first if you're not used to walking in these types of boots. Also the rocker is aggressive, so you will feel a roll when walking.. Stay with them and get used to these characteristics, and you will learn to love these boots and appreciate the price point and wide diversity of hunting environments that this boot can accommodate. Note: for very cold tree stand hunting, I change my socks upon reaching/climbing my tree stand; also I wrap my boots in boot covers made by Arctic Shield. I do this because I can't stand the 1000+ fill boots that are, IMO, appropriate for sitting still and not much else; your feet will sweat immediately upon actually walking anywhere.

Have had these boots about 2 weeks and used them three times. Twice around the house, then yesterday, all day outside. They are very warm, comfortable insoles and lots of up front room for heavy socks. Fit is perfect. The cable lacing system is unique and has operated flawlessly so far. The only reason for rating it 4 stars is that the boots are stiff, like one reviewer said, kind of like as ski boot. I imagine w/sufficient wear, they will loosen up. If they do, then 5 stars. Will report back after my elk hunt in northern New Mexico next month. The cable system should be tried on all leather boots.

Felt like I was walking on stilts, for this price a shoe should fit like a glove--poorly designed.
