Rated 5 out of 5 by WisconsinSubZero Nice and Toasty
Got this coat for the coldest parts of our Wisconsin winters. So far at low teens and light wind, it is plenty warm and protects against the wind. It seems like it will be sufficient for below zero temps as well. The hood is also very nice. This may be the first hooded jacket I've had where I could actually wear the hood (without it flopping over your eyes, looking ridiculous, etc,). If you zip it all the way up, there's also good coverage for your lower face and mouth, which is really nice when it's so cold. I only wish it was just a little bit longer (only covers part of your behind), and was available in more, better colors.

Bought one for my wife, she loved it warm and light. Her appreciation for the jacket made me buy one for myself. Wear it with a T-shirt in January and are plenty warm. Great fitting and warm hood also.

Yesterday we had our first snow and a really cold day. When I came home from work, my jacket had been delivered. Later I put it on and took the dogs for a walk in the cold and snow. Okay, here's the critique: the jacket is immeasurably light and warm. The wind does not push through it. The fit was perfect in a medium with my sweater underneath it ( I am 5' 6" and 122lbs). However, my first irritation was with the zipper having to be zipped by the left hand instead of the right hand and you should stop making these kinds of sexist functions on active gear especially. Somebody is NOT really thinking that women want just the same level of function from their gear as the men, and personally, your company is behind the time on this issue with this jacket especially. Another issue I have is with the internal zip pocket, which should be there but one also needs to be on the outside breast area like you put on many of the men's jackets. It is just ridiculous to think that women who are outside in the cold in this good down jacket would want to continuously unzip the front to get to that one inside zip pocket! I suspect that no outdoors woman had a say in designing this jacket? The fleece lined exterior zip hand pockets are nice but common expectations on a jacket of this kind. The final issue I have is with the hood. Although it fits well, it should zip off and it should have an extra bulk of down in a bigger and warmer collar area. The collar is almost non-existent in this jacket as if you thought the permanent hood
might make up for an almost invisible warm collar. Not true when the hood is down. Overall, some women may really like this jacket for what it is, but for $300, or a bit more, some women may want to look at other types of winter jackets with more functional features for the money.

The last time I owned an LLBean down jacket was easily 10 years ago. It took a long time for me to purchase another one, because that one and subsequent attempts at jackets, all which were returned, were too large. I am 5'2'', 111 pounds and small framed, with a 32" chest. It is very difficult to find an LLBean jacket of any material or style that doesn't swim on me.
I took a risk with this jacket because the weather has been so cold that down became necessary to have. (Am allergic to wool.) This jacket fits comfortably, with room for a sweater underneath, but with or without a sweater the fit is fine. The cinches at the sides keep the cold air from seeping up; the down is cozy; the cut is more aligned to my form; the color is more subdued than I expected (which I like); and the back covers my tush (which is something I wanted). Would have ordered the smallest size petite but it was out of stock so purchased the smallest size regular.
This is the most money I have ever spent on a coat (usually spend about $100) and I am happy as can be with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Shadfly Warm and comfortable jacket
I am 5'5" tall and I weigh 110 lbs. I ordered the XS in Darkest Violet and it fits very comfortably (not too tight) with room for a sweater underneath. I am one of these people who wear long sleeves in July, so warmth is very important to me! This jacket certainly fits the bill. I was out in the backyard for a few hours with the kids building a snow fort and I was toasty warm the entire time. The hood is the best-fitting hood I have ever had on a jacket. It stays up and does not slip off. The zipped up hood comes up right under the chin. If you have the hood down, it is a little more comfortable if you unzip the zipper at the top slightly to give yourself a bit more freedom of movement. This does not bother me as I usually wear a scarf anyway. The purple is a nice colour and is exactly as shown on the website. I think the reason why this jacket only comes in dark colours is because it is marketed as a jacket for winter camping and ice fishing. I can imagine that lighter colours would not be practical! I intend on using my jacket for downhill skiing so I also bought a pair of XS North Ridge Sport Pants. I am very satisfied with how the jacket fits over these snow pants.

That jacket is super warm and fits true to size. The slightly shaped design is more flattering than most down jackets on the market. I love how light it is.
I wish the hood was either detachable or at least partially separated cuz when coat is fully zipped up, it's uncomfortable to have the hood down. I'd rather have an outside zip pocked like men's so I wouldn't have to open the coat to get to inside pocket.
I agree with other reviewers regarding more color options and slightly longer length.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Jesmd Wonderful Coat but Dreary Colors
I just received this coat and love everything about it ?except for the color. I ordered the darkest violet, which is a very dark purple. It also comes in black. These colors are just too dark for me, so it is going back. I am envious that the mens? version comes in such a pretty shade of blue. Please offer this coat in brighter colors.

This is a great coat. I love everything about it. Just the right weight and size to keep me warm in our damp, cold climate. I really like the length of the coat too, because it hits below the hip, but is not too long. Two-way zipper is great.

Love this coat! I bought 3 different coats at the same time - this one, and two other high-end brand names - and this Bean coat is the one that kept me the most warm and dry. Very good sizing. Purchased my "true size" and still have room for a sweater underneath (perfect arm length). Highly recommend!

I've been Beans customer for years, but this is my first review. Had to say how much I love the Ascent Down jacket. So lightweight, toasty warm and rather flattering for a puffy jacket. Hood fits nicely over ski helmet. I've now skied with it on a variety of temperature days and windy, and it's just great. Plenty of room to layer, but it's so lightweight that you move easily. Just love it!
