This coat is great. It fits well, is very warm, and versatile. Sure it is heavy, but it is warm, long, and has handy features. I wish I had had it for past winters.

I had been searching for a knee-length warm coat for those cold winter days in Chicago for some time. The LL Bean Nor'easter Commuter Coat with Gore-Tex, Knee Length was a perfect match and when it came on sale (40% off) a few months ago, buying it was a no-brainer. The coat kept me warm and dry the past few months.
I'm 6'3", 200lbs (and wear 42L slim fit blazers) and the Large Tall fits me very well (the coat comes down slighly below my knee).
The only downside is that it is very, very heavy (I think the FedEx online tracking said the package weighed 8lbs) and bulky (I don't like wearing it when driving). Some reviewers complained about the zipper, but I haven't had any problems with it whatsoever.

I ordered the black spruce in tall and I received two darkgreen colored coats. Other then that I see some complaining about the zipper, the zipper has double headers on it which makes it a little challenging. I like the coat but both of the colors look the same when I ordered them. Nice coat I'm 6'3" @ 240 lbs. I wish more companies produced L.L.bean quality goods. Thanks guys

I ordered this hoping to use it as my winter rain coat. Unfortunately the mens xxl was wide enough but was too long in the arms and the pockets were past my waist. Great coat, would love to get one in a womens 3x as it was warm and secure. I recommend this.

Pros
Very Warm, Gore-Tex shell, lots of pockets, below knee length, nice hood, I'm a medium and it fits well
Cons
A bit stiff at first, zipper is tricky at first but it works fine now, it's a bit bulky if worn while sitting on a bus or train, attracts lint
Overall
I had a much earlier version of this coat and loved it. I replaced it with this one and I am very pleased.

The winters in Chicago demand a coat that can keep you warm when the wind kicks up and stays at 10-15 mph all day. I've had this coat for 2 weeks now and am heading into my 2nd snow storm expecting 6" of wet snow and steady winds. So far its been great. The Goretex shell is as good as ever and the wet snow or rain just rolls right off. This coat actually falls below the knee on my.....nearly mid-calf. I take the CTA so thats a nice bonus when waiting in wet and cold weather. The think the tempeture rating on this one is a little optimistic more like 25/ -20 degrees.
I've got that Baxter State Down parka and this one is not match for that in the warmth department. But it is a great coat for exactly what I needed. Very happy with it.

This is the warmest and best made Nor'easter I've bought from LL Bean. I had the 2 before this one but the latest is easily the best.and very well constructed. The 2 buttons at the top keeps the neck warm and protected. The knee length protects against those stubborn winds. The body and sleeves are very warm even on the coldest days. I love the 3 inside pockets especially the one that can hold a folded newspaper. The hand warmer pockets are right where they should be but not sure they needed zippers. All in all, this is the perfect winter coat.

I just purchased this coat during the Winter sale. It would have been too pricey for me at full price.
I am over 6' 3" tall and weigh approx. 215 pounds. 44" chest and 38" waist. I usually wear a 35" sleeve on the Bean shirts that I buy. Another customer, who described himself as 6' 3" but slimmer than I, wrote that the Large-Tall felt a bit tight in the chest, even with just a shirt on. Wanting to wear the coat over a sweater or work blazer, I ordered both the XL and XL-Tall for comparison. Neither felt 100% perfect on my body, but I kept the XL-Tall and returned the XL. Comments:
The coat falls well below my knees. Fittingly, I like this cut for commuting to/from work.
The sleeves fit just right. I can raise my arms up and down (like I'm trying to fly), without lifting the hem of the coat up and down (annoys me when that happens). I could not do the same in the XL.
The coat feels heavy and stiff, but that is not entirely a bad thing. It feels comforting to me, like being under a heavy, warm blanket on a cold night (rather than the feel of a super-light down comforter). When moving about, however, the stiffness is a bit annoying. I hope that, with wear, some of the stiffness will work itself out.
The inside of the XL-Tall is "puffier" than was the inside of the XL. Even the wool/nylon fabric seems to be fuzzier than what was in the XL. The upper-back and arms of the coat appear to bunch up more than in the XL, making it more difficult to insert the sleeves of a work blazer. It seems as though the cut of the fabric for the liner was too generous. Even the insulation does not seem as uniform and smooth as what I found in the XL.
I really like the snap closures, instead of hook and loop. It adds to the feeling of substance and security that the fabric provides
Have worn it in a light rain, and it seemed to perform acceptably.
I will give the coat a workout next Winter to see if it performs acceptably. If I come across another XL-Tall in a Bean store, I will try it on, to see if mine was just poorly cut/assembled. If they all are like mine, then I would suggest doing the following: Tighten up the weave on the wool/nylon and make sure the arm openings and fabric have enough girth and heft to easily allow insertion of jacket sleeves. Also, replace the Thinsulate with Primaloft, and replace the Gore-Tex with Tek2 (the Primaloft will cost more, but the Tek2 will cost less).

After a year of postponing the purchase, I made the plunge - and not one bit disappointed. The jacket is heavy, no doubt, but once you wear it for about 10 min, you get used to it - and doesnt seem to be a bother. what you will continue noticing is that you dont feel cold - not one bit. The jacket is a bit roomy for me (5'11'', on the thinner side) but that allows for ample movement during shoveling and snowblowing... the big sized pockets may seem odd - but you quickly realize that other jackets may not be able to accommodate your hands with gloves.... water proof nature of the jacket is fantastic - 28 inches of snowblowing - and not a single trace of dampness on the clothes.
Confused about some of the comments on the zippers - they are sturdy and work totally fine. the buttons allow for an even more snuggier fit - overall a great design.
Wearing it over a suit may be a challenge, however. While it would be fine with layers and thick sweaters, suits may result in some bundling up when you remove the jacket.
I wish I had purchased this earlier.... and now I am going to have LLBean as a top choice for fall-winter apparel needs... well worth the money. I hope they are as durable as they are advertised to be....

This is a beautiful heavy winter coat and I love it. I bought it at the LLBean store so I was able to try it on first. Here is what I learned:
1. The photos are deceiving. It is much more like a full-length parka than a rain coat or topcoat. Heavy coarse fabric with thick puffy insulation. Very long, very warm, and somewhat stiff and bulky. I bought it to wear as a cold & wet weather parka when working outside, and it's perfect.
2. I am 6' - 185 with long arms and legs. LLBean's Large Tall fits me perfectly, and so this does as well. However, I can see where it would be snug and uncomfortable in the shoulders and arms over a suit or sport coat (for which it was intended). You may need to go up a size if that is how you'll wear it.
3. The zipper is fitful, but it can be conquered: after you insert the left side tab down into the right side slider, move your hands apart so you are gripping ONLY fabric. Pull apart gently then down with your left hand and the tab will pop into the lower slider. (If you're in a big hurry, there are plenty of snaps.)
I got it on sale and am extremely happy with it. I've no doubt it will last me forever.
