Rated 2 out of 5 by LEGALBEAGLEWAREAGLE1 TOO WIDE AT HEEL
This is the only product I ever bought from Bean that was less than satisfactory. The overall quality on this boot is fine. But the back of the boot is too loose and does not make for a good fit. It slips way too easily.
Everything else I ever bought at BEAN is superior.

My overall experience with LL BEAN is very great. However, these canvas upper boots fail to meet the normal standards of excellence I have had with Bean.
The heel on the canvas model is awfully loose and the boot slips around like a loafer too wide. I had a shoe repair shop sew a pad in the back of the heel to make it fit; and while much better, it still is not quite right. My strong recommendation is to stay with the leather Bean boots. They are fantastic!
The canvas just ain't the same !

The shoe is great and looks great. The Fitting is as describe if you wear thin to medium thick socks then a 1/2 size smaller.

Rated 4 out of 5 by GT3Guy Great looking but hard to get in
I didn't follow the size guide and ordered my regular size. It was roomy but fine, however.... as others mentioned, the tongue of the boot is sewn together with the rest of the boot so it's tough to put your foot in. Also, these are not winter boots so your feet will get cold. Consider yourself warned. You want warm boots, get the thinsulate/gore tex version. These just look way cool so I'll deal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by eastwoods Mount Le Conte
On November 7 of this year I hiked Mt. Le Conte in the smoky mountains a 6,0000+ ft. mountain. The terrain varied from snow to mud, ice, ice covered rocks, flat to severe incline, there were creeks to cross over and several temperature changes. I figured I would put my Maine hunting shoes to the test with a 35/40 pound pack on. I must say they passed with flying colors, my feet were dry and warm the entire hike and I finished the hike with no blisters or pain of any kind. I wore thick wool socks with them. These shoes don't offer a lot of ankle support but I had no problems going up or down, I also wore them walking around town weeks before and days after and have yet to experience and sort of discomfort. If you have a large body frame to carry around these may not be for you, but if you are average athletically built body frame you could go anywhere in these shoes.

While I can understand where others are coming from when they say the boot is difficult to put on, I haven't experienced the same issue. I typically wear these boots in the spring or fall, hence, no bulky socks. These boots have been great!

Rated 4 out of 5 by Bostonbound Great once they're on
These boots look great and are very comfortable for extended wear/walking around. They've kept my feet dry during some torrential downpours.
One thing to consider with these boots is that they're tricky to get on. They require a good amount of manipulation to get your foot fully in. If they were easier to put on, they'd be a 5 star boot.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Polesacat Great shoe with major flaw
This is the first L.L. Bean product I bought that I have found lacking in fundamental design. A beautiful looking shoe, it has a major flaw, which is the extreme difficulty of getting one's foot inside it. Unlike other Bean Boots this shoe has an extremely narrow opening which leaves the wearer fighting with the shoe to get the foot in. Once the foot is in, the fit is fine. Surprising that something so fundamentally flawed was put on the market and sold.

What can you say about the Maine Hunting Shoe that hasn't already been written. They are fantastic.
I ONLY wish they still make the slip on version of the Maine Hunting Shoe. I like the MHS better than the Bean Boot.

Great look, but even with heavy wool socks, I find these boots do not keep my feet warm.
