Rated 4 out of 5 by JZinnie Great Quality Piece!..
This is a really great and classic piece from LL Bean. The quality is very much comparable to similar items that are double the price from other makes (nice, heavy wool). My only gripe is that the whole jacket (including the sleeve's) is unlined. This becomes problematic when layering a wool sweater or flannel shirt underneath, the sleeve's tend to bunch up and not slide down because of the unlined wool, this makes for a awkward moment when putting on and removing the jacket. I hope LL Bean brings back more items like this from their archive!

I am a hunter and also I am very particular about the clothing that I purchase. I purchased this item for big game hunting in Pennsylvania. I formally purchased many item from Beam, one which was a very similar coat. I needed a new hunting jacket because the other had interior sleeve elastic cuffs, which restricted my arm movement.
The Northwoods Wool Parka is lightweight but warm. The fit seems true and the coat looks good. I hunted in this jacket for two weeks during rain, ice, snow and sunshine. Temperature fluctuated between 40 and 17 F.
Overall, this Wool Parka performed well, provided warmth, enough pockets, unrestricted movement, and looks great. For warmth, it is a great top layer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by MaineSam I?m truly impressed!
This purchace was to replace my worn out 35 year old Melton wool jacket and chore coat. After ample time researching my choices the LL Bean parka was the clear winner. I prefer wool for a 3+ season jacket for all the reasons stated in the product description. To say I?m very stasified would not fairly illustrate my opinion of this parka. I?m impressed.
Field testing was conducted most of yesterday in weather with a wind chill of 8º. While wearing a tee shirt and light turtle neck underneath I was very comfortable. There are ample pockets for tools and gear, overall a well thought design for the outdoors person. Being one who does not let the weather slow me down, I truly recommend this parka.

I live in Australia. This is the first product I have bought from L.L. Bean.
I bought this jacket to wear in the high country on deer hunting trips over the winter months. I chose this jacket because of 2 features: First, it does not have a lining or extra insulation which means that you can move around in it without getting too hot. Second, the jacket does not have those press stud fasteners which can be noisy and could spook a deer in the bush. The jacket arrived quicker than I expected. When I took it out of the bag I was really suprised by the quality and value of this jacket. The material and construction is first rate. I also like the muted red and black plaid wool fabric. I found the jacket a little oversize which provides enough room to wear a sweater underneath if you want. What more can I say? I am looking forward to my next purchase from L.L. Bean.

Upon receipt I was delighted with the quality of this wool coat. The plaid is just as shown in the image. It is not too bulky or heavy for the kind of hunting I do in the Adirondacks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by MaxwellG Nearly perfect for my needs
I'm very picky about my clothes, and it's rare that I find something that is simply perfect for me. But this coat is very close. In fact it's so close I still gave it five stars. Anticipating LL Bean's tendency to size clothing for multiple layers, and knowing I rarely wear many layers, I ordered down a size and got the small. In a sport coat I generally wear a 40-42, and this small fits me well. I like my clothing to fit fairly closely to my body, and it's just right. If I wore thick wool sweaters or heavy vests , I probably would need a medium. Likewise, if you prefer your outerwear a little loose, I'd suggest you order your normal size.
As the review before mine mentions, wind can indeed blow right through this coat, and it's unlined and un-insulated. It's basically just a shell of fairly thick wool. The pockets are great, though I, too, find myself wishing for at least one interior breast pocket. It does have an enormous inner pocket that's great for quickly stowing letters, a newspaper, etc. And the back pocket is unusual but can be handy if you run out of room up front. For me, the collar is the perfect size. It doesn't look enormous but it's large enough that I can flip it up when the wind starts blowing and it'll keep my neck warm. A chinstrap underneath the collar would be nice, though.
One reason I bought this jacket is because here in the Pacific Northwest we get a lot of misty drizzle. I hate rain coats and this coat has quickly proven itself to me for our particular brand of rain. I've walked quite a few miles in the drizzle wearing this coat, and I was perfectly comfortable the whole time. Of course, for harder showers I still have to break out my old raincoat, but this coat works great in the rain 95% of the time. In 40 degrees and a light drizzle/mist, this coat is a joy for me to use.
Overall, it's functional, not too heavy, and (at least in the charcoal color I bought) quite classy looking. I haven't had it very long yet, but it seems to be extremely well made. Time will tell. If you live somewhere colder but still want wool, you might instead look at the Maine Guide Parka. Similar look and feel, but much heavier and warmer.

Rated 3 out of 5 by ruglette407 Wool Hunting Jacket
I chose this jacket in dark green because it was wool, quiet, and excellent camo for our spruce woods. It is not a "parka" though. It is much lighter than expected. The wind blows through it, and it would be much better with a liner. I also found it a little small in the arms; I cannot put a heavy sweater on in under it as I had wanted. It could really be enhanced with a couple of features like cartidge and shell loops on the inside pockets, and a couple of inside breast pockets. This jacket is more like a hunters "dress" jacket, to where to the mall. I will keep it, but I am disappointed.
