Rated 5 out of 5 by greatlakestrout BEST JACKET EVER!!! A MUST FOR OUTDOORSMEN
Seeing how I'm 28 and grew up in a time where man made materials ruled the market I was never exposed to wool that much or knew a lot about it. In my research I found it was the only material that could keep you warm when it was wet. Not to mention that it's very very strong, fire proof, and many other things.
SIZING! - I'm 5'10" tall, 175 pounds, athletic build, longer arms and legs for my build, and I had to return whatever size I originally got for a regular small. LL Bean said they size these for layers under the jacket. That being said, I can still wear 2 sweat shirts, a light jacket, put my bibs on, and still put this jacket on over all of that. It is a little tight at that point in time. I don't do that often, only when the wind chills are -30 and I have to SIT in the woods all day during deer season.
On to the jacket itself. I live in northern Wisconsin, and this jacket is all I need to stay warm, I just grab it and go. Unless it's gun season (where I just sit out in the woods for 12 hours) and it is unusually cold and windy, then I need another light coat underneath it. It has plenty of pockets. I always keep hand and feet warmers, cliff bars, lighters, gloves, and a neck / face warmer in mine, and I barely notice I have any of those things with me when I go places. Those are just good things to have on you when you venture off without notice. ( I do that a lot, spur of the moment fishing and hunting )
I got the red flannel version, I really wanted the cammo one, but I'm glad I went with the red flannel. Yeah I look like Almer Fudd at times, but it looks decent enough to go to church or out to eat vs cammo.
If I ever need to replace this for whatever reason, Ill be getting the exact same thing.

I love the fabric of this coat, the fit of the body is a bit on the slim-fit side. I am 5'4", 150 lbs & the large fit just fine in the body, although the sleeve length was too long for me. I like the coat enough that I am having those altered. Great for walking in the woods!

Rated 5 out of 5 by TheraP Wow! Wonderful Jacket!
Just "test drove" my new jacket. Roomy but can be narrowed through waist. Great pockets. Amazing strong zipper. Was warm enough over a light shirt and light vest. With plenty of room to layer if I want to. Nice and long over the hips. Love the plaid!
One thing I also loved. You can go into a store and not feel overly warm. This thing goes from hot to cold with no need for taking it on and off.
So many nice features. I should add that I'll be 70 in March and I think this is a jacket for ANY age! I expect this to last me the rest of my life. And enable winter walks and errands alike. I love it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by BrooklineGal great coat for winter in New England
I hate down, and it is nice to see primaloft used instead of torturing little animals. This coat is warm, heavy, and great for Boston weather. It looks retro-1950's woodsy girly kind of style. I bought a retro looking hat at goorin.com which goes with this very nicely. Great buy. I am 5'2" and around 140 pounds, and well proportioned, I bought a small (smallest size they have) and it is a bit large on me. Wish they had had a XS, but all in all I really like it.

A beautiful red plaid jacket just as it was described. Felt it would fit better if it had been sized different. The length of the jacket and sleeves were perfect but chest size and the fit in the arms were snug, not being able to have a long sleeve t-shirt underneath. I loved the look of this jacket as I had been looking for something like this for a while, but had to return it but didn't reorder the next size as I felt it would have been way to big and bulky.

Seeking the "White Christmas" 1940's classic era look- I bought this in small. It is a fashionable (see Burberry winter line) boxy cut. As a petite the jacket hits at mid thigh and the sleeves are generously long. I had the sleeves altered at the elbow for length- yes and it looks sharp. Thank you LLBean for remembering we ladies BUY timeless classics well made and adorable.

Rated 2 out of 5 by mbmarks Not what i expected
This coat wasn't what i expected. I ordered a small and it was huge. I'm not a tiny person- 5'4 and about 135/140lbs. I was swimming in it, an it was very boxy, it didn't have any kind of feminine fit to it at all. Also it was very long. I was sad i had to return it because i really wanted a good plaid coat.

WOW!!! What a beautifully constructed, well designed, comfortable, warm jacket. It is honest and looks like what it is--a winter coat made to wear in the coldest weather; not a piece of chunky fluff trying to look like it belongs in Florida. Given the increase in winters bitter cold, this could become the most popular jacket in North America. I moved to Maine two years ago from NYC. and would feel very "top style" wearing this coat while walking down Fifth or Madison. Glad to get back to wool and away from polyester. Thank you LLBean.

I have been reading the descriptions and reviews of all the winter jackets and coats, looking for something that would work for me without negatives that seemed to be problems. From the comments, this jacket stood out - and its Primaloft fill was a big plus. It just arrived, and I am delighted with it. The attention to detail is wonderful, the material is very high end, the zipper is sturdy and works easily (unlike with other Bean outerwear I have owned) and, though it isn't meant to be stylish, it has a very cool, retro look. It is clearly very warm, and constructed to be snug. I am set for another miserable winter if we are slammed again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by BrooklineGal love this coat
It was 12 degrees this morning when I first wore this coat. It kept me nice and warm. Love that it's mostly natural, with a primaloft fill. That is hard to find. It is a bit heavy, but it's well made. Love the brass ONE way zipper. I hate the two way zippers, they have no function other that total frustration when they stop working. I do have two bits of advice; MAKE A HOOD! How silly to make such a fine functional coat with no hood, and perhaps in a second color like a dark blue and black plaid. Otherwise I really love this coat, I hope it does well in the snow and rain.
