This is the most reliable filter on the market. Yes, it is heavier than the fully plastic ones and yes the finer filtering medium in it means that you may have to clean it more often. That being said, when your only water source within ten miles is of questionable quality this one will not break on you. I do wish the optional charcoal filter came with it, but you have to buy it separately. It's not required, but makes the water taste better and the charcoal will help remove any pesticides or insecticides in the water. Take care of the filtering medium and follow the storage directions that come with it. The replacement cartridges are kinda pricy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Brianboy It takes out all the gunk.
I wish I had this during all of my scouting years. This filter water and kills the microbes with the silver in it. I know that hospitals use silver because of its sanitary properties. That helps me know that I can trust it.

Unbelievably, this filter weighs 1 pound 3 ounces. It costs $350. This might be good for an outfitter who needs a long-lasting filter and pumps the clients' water for them, but it's overkill for the average lone backpacker.
