I was wanting a starter outfit but wanted a quality product, rod and reel to help in the learning process of fly fishing. I picked this Angler II Fly Rod outfit 8' 6wt. I had the opportunity to fish with this fly rod and reel combo and it worked great. Being very new to fly fishing I had my struggling moments but at the end I began to cast fairly well and the presentation and ability to work the rod and reel combo paid off.
I caught numerous fish including some nice small mouth bass. I was fishing a very historical river in Virginia with old locks and Civil War History. The outfit worked really nice and having a drag on the reel was nice for me as a beginner. I feel it will work even better for me as I advance.Great Product from L L Bean.

Rated 4 out of 5 by WPaFlyFisherman Outstanding First Time Rod/Reel combo
Picked this combo up after fly fishing for the first time. Have used it consitently for about 2 years now. Overall a very good combination for the price. I would recommend this one as an outstanding starter combo, use it, get comfortable then consider an upgrade in a few years. Then gift this one to another new fly fisherman or add to your inventory.

I lost one piece of my 4pc travel rod.Talked to Bean's rod repair. They said it was possible they may have the missing piece. They called me saying no luck but they were sending a Angler 2 kit( 7.3/5wt) with reel (arrived broken foot). However the two pc 7.5/5wt rod-felt like the stiffest thing ever. I put one of my 5wt reels on tho rod. What a surprise! This stiff little rod was a dream to shoot lots of line with good feel. Would recomend this rod to anyone.

This rod and reel are almost enough... actually you can fish with it but then not all that well. The rod ok for creek fishing but that is about it. Too short and probably should have been a three or four part unit and called it a travel rod. My real beef is with the reel. About to use for the third time and the little spring that makes the 'clicker' thing work is broken. While this will not change my using it on a different rod... Can't say much for the quality of the materials in the reel. Should have lasted for years. Disappointed. Don't tell everyone... this was a gift.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Victim7 Wow what a set!
I started fly fishing for the first time a year ago. After the first time I was the one that was hooked! I shopped around everywhere for the best deal, I don't like to spend until I've thoroughly done my research. I was surprised to see this set for such a cheap price, and I was attracted by their satisfaction guarantee. I figured worse case, I send it back! I've been fly fishing with this outfit for a year now and it's awesome! It performed in rivers, wading in streams, I even used the rod lake fishing, of course I had to change the reel since this line is a floating line and I needed an intermediate sinking line. The line is also not tapered, it's leveled, however the design is so good I don't notice a difference from when I used mine verses my friends who's been a die hard angler for awhile! The other day i actually caught more than he did. In fact he always tells me as I'm lugging in a big one "man, that's a nice rod!". Especially if you a starting out this is the one to get, you can't beat the price or the ease of using it! The drag works just fine.

You can spend a ton getting into fly fishing, but with this outfit you don't have to. Picked this up to try my hand at winter steelheading and am enjoying the rod a great deal. The reel is probably the weakest link, but that shouldn't surprise anyone with an outfit this affordable. My drag has intermittent problems, so I will return it and probably upgrade to the Streamlight Ultra, but I wouldn't let that stop you from trying the Angler II outfit first.

This is the fly fishing outfit I use for all my beginning fly fishing clinics at AMC's Maine Lodges. It is perfect in both price and usability for anyone who is just starting out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by DrTuck Fly rod and Reel starter outfit
I have had this rod and reel for over a year now. I have used it fishing for bass, white bass, wipers, trout, blue gill, perch and walleye. It has stood the test and I really like it. Yes, it is a starter outift and I am very glad that I bought it as a package deal. It responds exceptionally well and I have had no trouble with either the rod, reel or fly line. I would recommend this package deal to anyone who is just starting out to learn to fly fish.
