If you read my reviews you can see that last year I bought the 8ft 5 wt. It worked great. I fish big water as well as small remote woodland streams , and that's exactly what I will use this rod for (3wt.) I like to swap rod sizes on the same waters I fish some times. I also use my kayak to get to remote spots and fish that way . I have all the confidence in the world in all bean rods I own, that now number 4. I have been using Bean rods for over 20 yrs . Excellent service and the best guarantee in the fly fishing world. Go buy one and try it out, If you don't like it, send it back. I'm betting you will keep it.

Having previous purchase a Streamlight 9? 8 weight with pleasing results, I purchased a Streamlight 6?11? 4 weight rod with a Streamlight reel to fish for native trout in Western North Carolina The rod has a moderate action and performs very well in tight spaces. While I have other higher priced rods, the Streamlight for the money is a top value buy. Moreover, my confidence in purchasing from LL Bean is that they have the best service in business.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Phillip79 Cost effective for technical small stream fishing
I purchased the 2 piece ---6'6"---3-weight package earlier this year for fishing the small streams of Western North Carolina.
First off let me say that LL Bean continues to have the best customer service in the industry. They were able to make a short term change to my rig and get it to me quickly. Always first class.
Second, construction of this piece is not noteworthy, but for the price it is absolutely first rate. A similar rod from Sage or Hardy will be three times the price, so bear that in mind. The reel is solid but clearly its mass produced. The rod case leaves little to be desired for and I will be replacing with an aluminum tube from another vendor.
Third, I have fished this rod for about two weeks on the waters in question. I found the action to be a little less forgiving than I would have hoped but good enough for making presentations up to about 25 feet with a reasonable degree of accuracy. After about 35 feet its pretty unwieldy. All in all, it was the correct rod configuration for the area, and this rod was more than capable.
I would recommend this for a person looking for a destination rod where the destination might give you an opportunity to fish a small stream. Its a good second rod if your 5-weight is a high caliber rod as well. Would not make this my primary unless it just lived in your mountain cabin all year round.

I have several fly rods, and the SL Ultra's are hands-down my favorites. I have the two-piece models in both 4- and 5-weight, with Scientific Anglers pro-series fly line and Umpqua leaders.
The SL Ultra's have, in my opinion, the best balance of any of my rods. The taper seems just right; they're workable but with enough heft to throw streamers, etc.
Some have mentioned the volume of the "click" in the reel. I actually prefer this, as I can hear how much line is coming off the reel while I pull on each cast.
All in all, the SL Ultra is a great outfit at a great price. I would certainly buy a third if I needed another weight.

I got this rod for fishing small streams and creeks in VA, MD, and PA and I absolutely LOVE it. The outfit is balanced well, great quality, and very attractive. I had only ever fished with 6-8 weights before I got this rod so it took a little while to get used to, but after that I was shocked at the accuracy and control I had with the rod. The 3 wt can even handle heavier buggers within the 20'-30' range. The reel could be better looking, but it has sustained a lot of abuse and a wide range of conditions and never given me a problem in 2 years. This outfit could probably be sold for $200 and be a good bargain- that LL Bean is selling it for half that is insane.
If you are a beginner or intermediate fly fisherman you NEED to have this rod in your collection!

by jrossignol24 Unreal outfit for the price
Just totally exceeded all my expectations for a 170 dollar 5 wt. Great casts, awesome and smooth reel. Fly line is also of decent quality. I am more than happy with my purchase and pulled up my biggest wild Northern Maine brookie of the season with it on the first day with the rod. Cant recommend this package enough. Also was shipped to me in 3 days. Perfect big brother to my Pocket water 3 wt outfit which I also love.

I've had this for a couple of years now but decided this year I was going to get serious about fly fishing. I fly fish on small streams in NE Iowa and this combo can't be beat. Spent a week with my wife at our summer place and fished every day, catching a variety of Rainbow, Brown, and even a 17" Brookie with this rod. Wouldn't suggest it for larger water as it is hard to cast more than a few yards but on small streams it works great.
