Rated 3 out of 5 by MikeInFrederick Looks and works great, except for one big flaw
The build quality seems to be wonderful. That's the three stars.
I got the red one, which appears to no longer be for sale. The "wear" marks that come on the bag don't really look so much like high-end vintage wear marks as they look like splotchy areas where the ink didn't take. Instead of looking "vintage" it looks "ruined".
Really disappointed. I'd never owned a bag this expensive and thought this would make a nice foray into a higher-end bag, but I'm just disappointed.

Great bag! As a self described diva, I do wish the bag was bigger for more of my things but it's still a great great bag! Very durable!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by Pipette The photo looks better than the bag.
It looks like the right size and seems to be a useful bag. But, I cannot stand the shabby appearance of the material, and therefore mailed it back. The idea may have been that it should look used and broken in, but I prefer the "distressed look" on furniture and not on clothing or such a bag. I picked instead another bag with a brand new appearance of the material and with time, it will look used by itself.
This bag is roomy and well designed, but please, not that shabby look - that was the deal breaker.

Par for the course, LLBean has delivered an excellent, quality product in a timely fashion at a value price. This duffle is perfect for my planned getaway...sturdy, well made and quite handsome. Thanks LLBean for your consistency!

This bag is the perfect size, and looks extremely nice. It can easily hold 3 days of clothes with plenty of room for more. The leather accents adds a nice classy touch to the bag. Can't say much about the durability yet.
My only grip is the 'worn' marks on the bag. It's a love or hate thing and personally I think I would of preferred them not to have it. I don't think it shows it very clear on the picture, so I at first thought I got a defective bag. The bag is a little pricey for what it is, but you always plan on LLBean products lasting a lifetime so its worth it.

Love this bag! I feel like I am Bret Maverick boarding the all night express around the turn of the century (1900s) from Albuquerque to Dallas. This is a great over night traveling bag. For most folk it is a weekend bag, and for some who know how to travel light, you could go for a week. Excellent authentic turn of the century look and feel to the material, and I just love the color. Well constructed and the main zipper is heavy duty and glides easily. I do not see this bag as a gym bag as it is too classy looking for such mundane use. Go for it!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by MacDuffle Great bag
I have had these bags for most of my half-century.
They're tough, they're stylish in their woodsy way, they carry a stunning amount of kindling and campfire wood, they even float a while if they're empty.
I've lately been using the newer version but once I found the historically accurate recreations they're all I carry. I just can't seem to find a small one.
Unless your next assignment involves a tux, or you can't bear the curious looks from the staff at The Pierre, this is the best bag you'll ever own. Get one.

My son absolutely loves this bag. He is using it in Ireland as a weekend bag as he travels. And has suggest that we get another one for his brother! The bag is very durable and light weight.

by RuletheProust Done after second use...
I had high hopes for this duffle and, upon seeing it, I thought that it was everything I was looking for: maximum airline carry-on specs, minimalist style, and seemingly durable construction. The canvas material the bag is constructed of is, to me, the perfect balance of weight and strength.
On my second use (and in the middle of a trip) two weeks after receiving the bag, however, one of the leather tabs that attaches the shoulder strap to the bag began to tear off. And no, I wasn't carrying bricks or lead weights.
The bag is of course covered by LL Bean's warranty, but I wish I received a functional bag instead of having to deal with the hassle of a return. I am not certain a replacement will remedy the problem given that the defect appears to stem from a design flaw; the leather tab is not double reinforced and simply too thin and flimsy to be dependable.
