Rated 1 out of 5 by RapidRC Keep Tearing in Rear
4 out 6 pair that I own have torn on the corner of the left rear pocket or with one pair, the entire back end split open. I love the design with 8 pockets. I wear them mostly to go shopping or casual wear, never for working or hiking, which would put some stress on the material. I have owned 6 pair since 2014, and as of today, I am returning or have returned 4 pair, all with the same defect. I am actually afraid to wear the remaining two pair. I would expect better quality from LL Bean.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Oceanlizzie Husband's favorite shorts
Not an easy man to please with clothes, my husband really likes these shorts. I admit I bought the coral plaid because they were on sale, and was surprised at how awesome they look and fit on him! Since they're 100% cotton, I'll most likely wash in cold and hang to dry, although drying in low would probably be ok (just don't want to risk it!)
He especially likes the thickness (pretty heavy) and lots of pockets. We go to the beach often so good pockets to keep things sand-free and secure is an important feature.
I was worried the coral would appear pinkish but it does not. The offer of the odd 35" waist is nice too.
He's very pleased so more will be ordered!

Rated 1 out of 5 by Texheavy Pocket seam torn after handful of wears
Bought these shorts to replace a pair of LL Bean cargo shorts I bought back in 2008 and wore everywhere (including multiple trips to SE Asia) with only the loss of the main button. After all those years of heavy wear, the cuffs finally started to fray and the material just wore too thin in the front thighs.
This new pair is of a different kind of material. Doesn't feel as durable. The zippered pockets have small pulls, one of which was torn off the zipper as I squeezed through a small doorway on the second or third wear. Then, a few wears later, I noticed a hole opening at the corner of one of the rear pocket seams.
Not sure what to do, since I go to LL Bean for durability, but that doesn't seem to be a factor anymore.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Goldsboro So sad...
I bought these and loved them.
Then I washed them.
Now one has an inseam of about 8 inches, and the other about 7.
Maybe my daughter can wear them...

Rated 3 out of 5 by desertdawg A rare miss
It's rare that I get something at L.L. Bean that I regret buying. This is one of those purchases. The material is heavy and stiff, not very comfortable. Worse, the dye of my British Khaki color item was not even over the shorts. Here and there, there are small splotches that appeared after washing. I washed exactly according to instruction. The fit was true, so that's a plus. Disappointed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Stanziola Pocket Zippers that Close Bottom to Top
I love everything about these shorts except for one thing that is very problematic. The side pocket zippers close from the bottom to the top, which renders the pockets useless for securing things. Gravity gradually causes the zippers to fall, opening the pockets. I don't know who decided to change zippers in recent years to closing upward vs. closing downward, but this isn't a problem with just these shorts, it's a problem with zippers on jackets, pants, etc. Please LLBean, ask all of your clothing manufacturers to change zippers back to the old design.

I've had to return these shorts 3 times because the button keeps breaking. Love the shorts otherwise, but the cheap buttons are a deal-killer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Beedapox Nice Design But Poor Longevity
While I really like the design of these shorts, I am finding that they simply do not wear well and are not worth the purchase price. Every single pair that I own have torn on the corner of the left rear pocket. The newest pair is only a couple of months old and are now relegated to "yard work" because of the holes that have formed. Given the price of these shorts, one would expect them to last a lot longer and wear much better than that. These observations seem to be limited to the Allagash shorts since other items I have purchased have not had the same issues.

Rated 3 out of 5 by TonyDC Weak Stitching, Tight Zipper Pockets
This is the second summer that I've worn these shorts. I have 2 pair, and both are comfy and fit well. The zipper pockets are handy to have, but the opening is a bit snug for my large hands. Like other reviewers, I've had problems with the button on the waist. They didn't break, but the stitching frazzled and the buttons fell off. Also, on one pair, the stitching on the fly has come loose. The fabric seems quite sturdy and should last for years, but the stitching will probably wear out long before the fabric does.
