Bought two pair of these in tan and sage. Both pair fit exactly right in 35" waist and 32" inseam. Love the buttons instead of velcro for the pockets. Was concerned about only 5 belt loops as I usually look for pants with 7 belt loops to keep the waistband from curling and sagging when bending or doing other physical work on my job, but the well built waistband on these pants prevent any of those issues. I also like the gusseted crotch because of the increased freedom of movement. I wash these pants in an automatic washer with hot water and then just hang them on pant hangers to dry; keeps the wrinkles and shrinkage down. I plan on getting the asphalt color and maybe a couple pair of shorts for spring/summer/fall hiking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by squarefootgardner Awesome pants - for real work or students
My 6'1", 16 year old son LOVES these pants. The cloth feels great on and to the hand. It is light, but feels sturdy. He likes the contrasting orange button holes on the gray. Others might not. The belt loops are wide enough to take a wide leather or webbing belt. He is slim and they fit fantastically well on him. He measures a 29 or 30" waist by the tape measure. I bought him a 31" and they fit perfectly. They are an old-fashioned, traditional cut, so ride high on the hips (2" or so under the navel). For this reason, if you have a bit of a pot belly, these are NOT a good choice for you. If you are slim, they look great.
There are lots of useful pockets (they're cargo pants, after all). I had not expected the two zipped wallet pockets. Those are very useful both in the city, but also when you're doing serious outdoor work, rolling around, and don't want things to drop out in the dirt. Some less expensive cargo pants have many pockets that don't actually hold that much. These are generous and well designed so actually do. He was out working with the chickens and immediately stuffed them with tools, his keys, and his phone, and they took them beautifully.
All back and lower leg pockets are double buttoned. At first he was surprised that the flaps covered the buttons. This is, admittedly, more awkward than an open flap or velcro. However, they don't catch lint like velcro does. More importantly, it means that when it's really dusty or raining, water or dirt doesn't drip through the button holes.
He is thrilled with them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Francis42 The way to save back pockets
Lately with some pairs of LLBean pants which I have bought the back pocket wears out from keeping my wallet stored back there. I bought a few of these pants with cargo pockets and simply keep my wallet put away in there and have no further problems with wear and tear to my back pockets. Not only that but when driving on a long road trip my bottom no longer gets sore from sitting on my wallet. I am really sold on cargo pockets.

Rated 1 out of 5 by length Too short.
Waist is fine. I normally fit a 38x34. these do not fir me however. I need a 38x36, and they don't make them in that length. These are a legit pair of pants, but unlike other pants they make, THEY DON'T ADD THE 2 Inches.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Goldsboro Love the Pants, and love the Buttons!
I bought these after trying a competitors version. The other pants were too much like skinny pants, and the bottoms looked slight bell shaped.
THESE, on the other hand, fit like a man's pants should. They are well constructed, and the stitching is solid. The cargo pockets are roomy, and they stay closed.
I love the buttons! They are very similar to the buttons on the pockets of the BDU's and MCU's I have worn. If you are one of those people who wrongly believe that velcro is better, then you can still add it, as the buttons connect to a secondary flap. Velcro could be added to that flap without changing the look or function of the pocket.
The extra zip-up pockets are perfect for my needs, as I often visit places where it is wise to keep your valuables in a secure pocket.
The material is soft, and yet it appears to be tough enough. The only downside I can see to these, is that the waist is slightly tight compared to other pants I have in the same size. The length is spot on though.
I like earth tones, and the color is good on these. Even color throughout, and no fading on the initial wash.
I bought three pair, and all three are equally well made and comfortable. Casual enough for a night out, without looking like I just came from the farm.

I bought two pair of these for a trip to Europe. I wanted a pant that would be durable and had carrying capacity. I read the chorus about the button difficulties. I actually wanted something that would help deter pick pockets. I figured difficult buttons could help and that I could get used to them. That is exactly what happened, The capacity, fit and pants were very good. The buttons are not easy to open, but after a while I figured out the technique and it became very easy for me to use them. As far as I know no one tried to pick me so what I wanted, I got. I especially liken the two side zip pockets. There I could keep my passport and cards in an RFID holder and they fit well. The pockets are NOT intrusive yet you can feel the presence of what you put into them so that helps. I think it would be difficult for anyone to pick them. Your natural arm/hand position is over the pockets. Yes you might be upset at first with the buttons, but soon that becomes old hat and not hat bad. Getting through airport security was not delayed beyond the normal. As to breaking the buttons I do not know yet. We plan to wash them buttoned and we'll see. That would be a second add on review.

Rated 2 out of 5 by nottoday These pants do not hold up very well
LL Bean products used to hold up for a few years of normal use. These pants, which I consider expensive as casual pants go, do not hold up to anything but casual wear. They definitely will not hold up to hiking or casual yard work.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Elizabeth111 Poor quality, don't wear well.
My husband bought three pairs of these pants about a year ago. These are used for casual wear, NOT hiking, etc. And, they aren't worn everyday. Today, as I took them out of the wash, I noticed that the edges of the waist bands and the bottoms of the hems are fraying and they look horrible. LL Bean clothes used to last for years, through hard wear. Don't buy these pants if you are looking for quality.

Rated 2 out of 5 by almunday60 llbean quality has slowly done down
I've been an llbean customer for almost 30yrs....pants quality has gone down each year. These pants sit low on the waist, pants are too shallow and you need to be careful otherwise thinngs may fall out.
cargo pockets are too awkward to open with both buttons used.
stress points have to be sewn because they started to give.
llbean needs to go back to old school --- pants with long rise, deeper front pockets...cargo pockets too baggy...do not buy

Rated 3 out of 5 by OwnLotsBeanStuff Fastening of pocket flaps!!!!
Both the cargo pockets and back pockets use a 2 button fastening system between two flaps that cannot be described here. In a real pinch you may be able to undo a back pocket, but I doubt anyone has ever successfully re-buttoned one without taking the pants off, which is difficult and embarrassing in winter, or in a public place. Personally, I couldn't even unbutton the cargo pockets with one hand, but I may not be as skilled as some. These must be designed for bungee jumping to assure that your stuff doesn't fall out.
If you need extra buttons, I'm cutting 8 off the pants that I'd gladly give away.
