I purchased one collar to use for two dogs. Great product! I put it on one dog for a half hour, then the other. After collar is removed, there is still no barking all day!

We have an Icelandic sheepdog....they are a very barky breed but, also, very smart. After one day with the collar on the lowest setting she got the idea. We only use the collar during times we really need quiet. But she is in general much quieter when she isn't wearing the collar. I tried all kinds of training methods first...nothing worked. Much more peace in our family!

Rated 4 out of 5áby DogPack Effective but lacking one key feature and info
First off, the value of this collar and any e-collar is the ability to give an immediate correction that the dog does not associate with you. The dog learns to associate the correction with the behavior rather that with you. This is the problem with many other training techniques. The dog just learns not to do it when you're there. This collar is not for punishment or use out of frustration.
I've found this collar to be effective at stopping our young bird dog from barking incessantly when she wants something. She is rather determined and stubborn about getting her way. It only took 2 uses to subside the barking, but please read my experience so you can make an informed use of this tool
The first thing I did after charging this unit up is put it on myself. I believe in understanding what I'm doing to my dog. On the lowest level, it was more of a tickle than a shock. The second level is like a good rubber band snap. The third level got me to yelp, and I took it off after the fourth. I really wouldn't want the highest level shocks. I say this just so you know what you're inflicting on your dog...you should always use the lowest setting that the dog responds to.
The collar comes with three settings. The progressive setting starts with the lowest shock and moves up until the dog stops barking. The temperament trainer is similiar but it will start off at whatever level you set it to incase your dog doesn't respond to the lower settings. The third setting lets you select a fixed level of stimulation.
The fault with this product is the fact that the progressive and temperament trainer settings don't allow you to set a maximum stimulation level. If your dog doesn't have the understanding yet that bark=zap or they are crying in true distress, this collar can severely an unnecessarily shock a dog. Remember, you only need to stimulate the dog at the lowest level to which they respond, and the higher levels of shocking should only be used for dogs that understand and disobey.
The collar instructions recommend training your dog with the progressive training mode. This is BAD advice. Your dog needs to understand the association with bark and shock before you increase the intensity. Otherwise, it is just punishment without learning, and it is cruel.
The initial time we used this collar, we set it to progressive training as recommended. My dog bark, got shocked, barked again, shocked and so on. She couldn't understand that continued barking meant continued shocks, and she became very distressed. I immediately took it off of her, but the experience was traumatic and I am upset the instructions neglect to account for this. Remember that correction without understanding does not equal learning, no matter how severe the correction is.
I waited several days and set the collar to a manually selected level "1". I put it on the dog. She barked, paused with this confused look on her face, I could see the gears turning in her head, she gave another very experimental bark to identify cause and effect, associated the barking with the correction, and stopped barking. It was very easy this way. Not even a yelp or a wince. This is how you should at least initially train the dog. Start with the lowest setting manually, and progress up to a level they respond. If they respond to a lower stimulation, their is no value in increasing the shock.
This is a good product, but I do not like the instructions they give for initialy training. The product is well built, and charge lasts for almost a month, and it does work when used appropriately. Do understand that this tool inflicts pain at the higher level, and use it appropriately. Monitor your dogs, and treat them gently.
I just ordered a sportdog remote controlled trainer to fix some other behaviors. THe bark collar is good for barking because it immediately corrects faster than you ever could with a remote, but it is only good for barking. Seeing how fast my dog learned, I would just buy a remote collar and manually use it for barking, because the remote collars are more versatile. But, now I have both collars, and that isn't a bad thing.

Rated 5 out of 5áby LuckyLab Works great, best buy here at LLBean.
I have 2 Labs that love to make noise. These collars are very effective. When we put it on them now they never bark. Happy neighbors.
I had a problem almost a year later and LL Bean replaced it no questions asked. Does it get any better than this? Happy Customer.

The product caused severe burns on my dogs neck. It was used only when someone was home and on the lowest setting in the morning when he went out and for our walks. Please just watch your dog, should you purchase this product

This device has made my border collie mix a calmer dog. He no longer feels the need to react to everything. 3 days of timed use. Morning (when he gets let out and wants to attack every squirrel) for about 3 hours. Evening about 2 hours when he is out walking and would like to stop every skateboarder. Brilliant device..

Dog is no longer a backyard nuisance. She took about one day to respond; about 4 days overall to really quiet down. Sweet dog that I always knew was there is now evident :)

Rated 4 out of 5áby MaineCoastPirates 4 days in and the dog is quiet
Bought this for an excitable family pet who barked at anything passing by the house, especially people and other dogs. We opted to use the standard training mode which each time the dog barks, the stimulus increases until the dog is quiet for over 30 seconds when the stim level returns to 1.
The first time the dog barked repeatedly, he barked 3 or 4 times, gave a quick yelp from the stim sensation and ran to find his owners. It was several hours later that he barked again at the neighbor's dog, but stopped after 3 quick barks.
It's now 4 or 5 days since we first put this device on our dog and everyone is doing great. The humans are enjoying the normal sounds of the neighborhood and even our dog does not seem as stressed about dogs or people outside the yard.
The plastic collar is very long which can be cut to a more practical length for the individual dog. The on/off/mode button is hard to press and we are using a pen cap to press it hard enough. Lastly, there was no DVD in our box as indicated in LL Bean's product description.
