I consider myself pear-shaped (27-inch waist and 37.5-inch hip) and at first I was hesitant to order it because of the reviews mentioning the skirt would not look good on somebody who is curvy. However I love wool material and thought the color of the skirt was pretty, so I ordered the size 4 Indigo when it went on sale. When I received it, at first I was disappointed, because on the website, I thought it was a purple skirt with gray undertone. However what I saw in person was a gray skirt with pink stripes. I left it in the closet for about three weeks, waiting to return it to the store. But right before I did, I decided to put it on, at least giving it a try. I'm very glad I did, because it fits perfectly! I usually wear an Oxford shirt tucked in and tights when I wear wool skirts in the winter anyways, so I haven't felt the scratchiness of the wool while wearing it. Also the material is thicker than my other wool skirts. I have to mention that because of the wide waist band on the skirt, it would be more comfortable on somebody who has flat abs, which I have, but it gets a bit tight right after meals.

Rated 4 out of 5 by XS115 Waist Runs Large
I ordered this skirt in the black and white plaid, petite size 4. I am just under 5'4", about 107 lbs. and normally wear between a size 2-4. The size/fit chart said it should fit waist 26 1/2 and hips 36 1/2, which should have fit me. However, the waist was a good FOUR inches too big. It was a well-made skirt, beautifully lined with a quality zipper, and the petite length was perfect. (I am long-waisted, shorter in the leg.) I decided to have the skirt professionally altered. This added about $35 to the cost because the side zipper increased the complexity of bringing in the waist, but it is a beautiful skirt and now fits me perfectly. If you are willing to pay extra to alter this skirt, I'd recommend it. Otherwise, be aware the waist did not run true to the size chart.

This skirt is made of wool, has a straight fit, rides just below the natural waist and comes to the knees. All of this information is available in the description offered by L.L. Bean. After reading the copious reviews complaining about scratchy fabric and troubles with the fit, I was quite worried that this skirt might be a problem but I really wanted a nice, plaid, wool skirt. So, I gave it a chance.
Upon receipt of the skirt, I was delighted to find that my normal size fit me perfectly and that the fabric was just what one expects of a woven wool. I always experience itching whenever wearing wool, even of the highest quality. I have found that the lining in this skirt takes care of the naturally scratchy nature of the fabric.
Although I am larger than the average woman, I don't have any "problem" areas in my figure. Everything is in proportion resulting in an hourglass figure. I am taller than most, broader than most but not fatter than most. In my normal size, this skirt fits me just as it should around the waist and hips. For me, it hits a bit above the knees but, being 4 inches taller than most women, that is what I expect.
If you have a problem spot with your figure, thick waist, wide hips, generous saddlebags, flabby tummy, etc, you need to stay away from any straight cut skirt. This just isn't the skirt for you. If, however, your hips and waist are in proportion, be honest with yourself about your size, and you will be pleased with this skirt.

I love this skirt. It really is very flattering and the colors are beautiful. I initially got the one with the purple plaid and then asked for the Tartan for Christmas. I am quite pleased with both. My teenaged daughter liked it so well that she asked for one for Christmas too. At 5'4" with short legs, the petite sizing was just right for us. The only thing wrong is that the wool at the top of the waistband is itchy, so I always wear the skirt with a camisole tucked in and then a sweater or blouse over the top.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Tollerlover great quality, style, had to add belt loops
Like the above knee length ( 5' 5"), but had to add belt loops since I am between sizes. Wool is scratchy on the outside but the lining fixes the inside. great with tights and boots. price is high, though, and they never seem to have a good sale.

I like the skirt, and I disagree with some of the reviews that it doesn't look good on curvy figures. I am very curvy, and once I sized up it looked perfect on me. However, the wool is so scratchy! I'm not one to be bothered by that, either, but holy cannoli! The lining doesn't help that much with it. I'm keeping because I like the skirt that much, but those with sensitive skin, beware! This is NOT the skirt for you. Also, the regular length is perfect, if not a tad bit long on me. For reference, I'm 5'9" tall with long legs and a round tush, and I usually wear an 8, but I got this in a 10 in this. I ordered the same skirt (different colors) for my mom in an 18?fit her perfectly as well but I don't know her measurements. :)

Rated 1 out of 5 by JennyO90 Really scratchy and frumpy
This skirt looked terrible on me. I am a size 14 and i went up a size when ordering the skirt so it wouldn't be to tight on my waist. The skirt had no shape to it and looked so frumpy on me. I can see this skirt looking better on someone who is tall and thin maybe and likes to dress modest. The material was REALLY scratchy on the outside. I am returning this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Calwashere Perfect, quality wool skirt
Substantial fabric makes makes me feel like I'm investing in a wardrobe that will last. Sizing is off for me because my hip and waist measurement is the same. I had to bring in the sides by two inches and I also hemmed it an inch. After alterations, it was perfect. I can't blame ll bean for my lack of hips.
I see the variety of comments about the wool.... I think it's substantial and the weight is perfect for Maine winters. Good pair of tights and it'll be a classy winter outfit. Add the ll bean cashmere crew neck and it's a true indulgence in luxury.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Ashevillian Nice knee-length wool blend skirt
I purchased the Sable & Indigo in a petite 6 (5'2" 130 lbs).
The Indigo was a full inch shorter and 3/4" smaller in the hips/waist than the Sable in the same size! Also, the Indigo skirt had what looked like burlap threads stuck in the fabric. I've pulled most of them out but the fabric is still very coarse and scratchy.
Both skirts are very nice, well made, itchiness is mitigated by lining...but due to the sizing differences I had to go 4 instead of 5 stars.
I like that even though these are dry clean only, you can press out the wrinkles with a warm iron at home.

Rated 3 out of 5 by mere819 not for me
I wanted to LOVE this skirt because it's wool, very nice looking and warm for winter, but even in a petite, the length is just too long for me. I had hoped to wear with my tall boots, but there isn't enough room between the top of my boot and the bottom of the skirt to make it look good.
