Rated 3 out of 5 by fred1234 Not a base layer
This shirt is more like a light sweater or midlayer. The fabric is a nice "next to skin" merino. (I'm a knitter, I know from merino.) It's not remotely itchy. That is ruined by the seams. Structurally, most of them are flat, but are sown with a course, rough thread. There is one long seam on each side that is not flat, but particularly irritating. I tried to turn the shirt inside out, but the placket for the zipper makes that look awful.
Luckily for me, I didn't intend to use it as a real base layer, but will always have one of my Rambouillet wool undershirts on under it. Still, the seams are a bit annoying for the first few minutes. However, the fabric is nice, and the fit is good. At this price, I will keep it for a light sweater.

I was so excited about this product, because I have the expedition weight shirts in 2 colors and love them! Unfortunately, when I tried this shirt on, it was super itchy! I was weary about the wool, but other reviews were great, so I thought it would be fine. I'm sorry to say that it would only work in a larger size as an outer layer, but would probably still be itchy around the neck.

Soft, comfortable and true sizing. I wear it over a light running shirt or sports top to stay warm after exercise. Confident it would excel under a wind breaker or warm up jacket on cold days.

Great as a base layer or to take the chill off. I wore this with a tee under it everyday on a recent vacation. It took the chill out of the mornings and evenings. It even kept me warm when a drizzle started during a hike.

Rated 5 out of 5 by SophieNY Perfect for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing!
Remarkably soft fabric; feels great against the skin, better than the clingy silk I've worn for years. Perfect under a lightweight jacket for vigorous exercise (snowshoeing and X-country skiing) at 20F to 5F; haven't had the opportunity to test it at colder temps yet. Medium fits my 5'8" 130 lb long-armed frame perfectly, though I don't use the thumbholes. After multiple outings with it in upstate NY, ordered another as a gift and the matching bottoms (mens tall to get the length I need) for myself.

I've purchased a number of merino base layers. This one is a great deal. It's warm, quite long, and the thumb holes are an added bonus. Too bad it doesn't come in a larger variety of colors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Bergenandbeyond Soft and warm with no itch
I purchased this on line and read the other reviews before ordering as I find them to be quite helpful on sizing. I ordered a small which was loose out of the bag, but when washed and dried on low heat the fabric tightened up a lot and now the top fits like a small. I love it and like others wished LLBean made it in other colors.

Definitely going to buy more of these tops. Super comfy, warm and easily can wear 2 days without washing, so great for overnight trips. Washed great on a cool cycle and low tumble dry- didn't shrink. Love the thumb holes as well. All around A++....

Rated 5 out of 5 by RevuGuru Comfortable, warm, looks good
This top has worked great for running and cross-country skiing in Northern Minnesota. It fits good and provides enough warmth for active sports in below zero temps. The black/blue color is vibrant and the thumb holds on the sleeves come in very handy.
