Rated 4 out of 5 by Aimo Just the layer I was looking for.
I can't comment on quality/size vs. previous because this is my first purchase, but I am enjoying it. I am 5'2.5" and range from 140-145 lbs. The small is a great fit on me. I find the layer to be soft and not itchy. It is my first Merino wool top (I just discovered bottoms recently), so it's been keeping me warmer than my other workout clothes this winter. I will say the finishing in places is not very robust. The zipper cover is silly. And the neck flops when not zipped so it needs to get tucked UNDER. Would have gotten the crew, but I liked the Daily Markdown price on this one.

I love the Cresta base layers, but sadly they are thinner and not as warm as the originals. I hope L.L. Bean will consider bringing the quality up to where it was a few years ago. I would be happy to pay more. I still have the first one I bought and wear it all the time so it was easy to compare the old with the new.
Also the tops are getting larger. I am 5'9" and 125 lbs. My new Extra Small is a bit too large! I have found that one has to order all Bean clothes a size smaller than that indicated on the size chart.
Still this is one of the best merino wool tops out there.

Rated 1 out of 5 by StillGettingWet Very Disappointed!
I have bought several of these over the past few years - in various styles, colors, and sizes. They are some of my favorite items of clothing. Recently, I ordered a new black quarter-zip style to replace one which I'd accidentally put a hole in. I was stunned when I received the top because it appears to be a very different item from the others I own - the material feels very different, the weight is not nearly as heavy, and the sizing is much larger. At first, I thought that it was the wrong item, but when checked closely, it appears to be correct - or, at least, it's the correct item in name. It is definitely not the correct or same item that it used to be. I am very disappointed in LL Bean for changing it so significantly. I am sending it back.

Rated 3 out of 5 by 3Riversmom Fits looser than my old black one
i purchased a small black Cresta quarter zip about 4 years ago...love it!! I was so excited that LLBean brought out a pattern Cresta. Put it on Christmas Day and found it to be so loose in the arms and body. I have since washed it twice and the last time with warmer water to try to tighten the fabric hoping it would shrink up a little as I remember my black one did. No luck. I think the cut is just larger now and I find it so frustrating with LLBean that their sizing is not consistent.
I may return for an XS, which I really am not with a 34DD cup.

Rated 5 out of 5 by winterharbor Great Base Layer
I've been wearing this for several hours at home to test it out - the last base layer I purchased from Bean (same style, but synthetic) was scratchy and uncomfortable. But the wool version is great - it's soft, warm, lightweight, and not at all itchy. I tried it briefly outdoors and it seems comparable to other merino wool turtlenecks I have. The sleeves are plenty long enough and I love the zipper - great for activities like skiing where you might need to "vent." I like it so much I'm planning to ask for the pants for my birthday.

Bought one for my girlfriend and myself. We both wear them constantly. Love the soft merino wool and cut of this piece.

poor quality merino wool. Very itchy on your body, even if I put a shirt underneath. returning my order.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Mac232 Great looking but not usual llbean construction
I love the look of this item but after wearing it only twice, it's showing signs of pilling on the sleeves. Also the stiching on the sleeve and hem is unravelling already - not up to usual llbean standards. That said, it is comfortable and warm without adding bulk. If it weren't for Canadian duties/taxes lost, I would likely return this item and trade it in for the lightweight Merino wool base layer that I have previously purchased and LOVE to this day.

The second time I wore this sweater the zipper broke. Very flimsy construction on the zipper area in general, I envision it fraying very soon. Also, I do not understand the purpose of so many seams on the shoulders - there are 5 or 6 of them on each shoulder, they are quite thick and very annoying, when one seam would be more than enough. Alas, the best merino wool sportswear I've ever owned was made in the Soviet Union, too bad it got destroyed and they do not produce those suits any more, otherwise I'd stock up for the rest of my life. Nothing I saw in North America comes even close to those wool sports suits in quality, durability and value. This is who L.L.Bean should learn from.

What not to love. A wool shirt that is not itchy. A zipper for easy on and off of a turtleneck. Length that works for tucked or untucked. Hidden thumb holes for extra hand warmth. A new favorite.
