poor quality merino wool. Very itchy on your body, even if I put a shirt underneath. returning my order.

I love the look of this item but after wearing it only twice, it's showing signs of pilling on the sleeves. Also the stiching on the sleeve and hem is unravelling already - not up to usual llbean standards. That said, it is comfortable and warm without adding bulk. If it weren't for Canadian duties/taxes lost, I would likely return this item and trade it in for the lightweight Merino wool base layer that I have previously purchased and LOVE to this day.

The second time I wore this sweater the zipper broke. Very flimsy construction on the zipper area in general, I envision it fraying very soon. Also, I do not understand the purpose of so many seams on the shoulders - there are 5 or 6 of them on each shoulder, they are quite thick and very annoying, when one seam would be more than enough. Alas, the best merino wool sportswear I've ever owned was made in the Soviet Union, too bad it got destroyed and they do not produce those suits any more, otherwise I'd stock up for the rest of my life. Nothing I saw in North America comes even close to those wool sports suits in quality, durability and value. This is who L.L.Bean should learn from.

What not to love. A wool shirt that is not itchy. A zipper for easy on and off of a turtleneck. Length that works for tucked or untucked. Hidden thumb holes for extra hand warmth. A new favorite.

I really love this shirt. I have it in both the quarter zip version as well as the crew - in several colors and sizes. I wear the zip one over a smaller-sized crew during the winter when walking my dog - it is a great way to layer and keep warm. These tops are very soft - and, I don't find them itchy at all. I often wear my black quarter zip with a t-shirt underneath when working at home or doing errands - it is my "go to" top when it's even slightly cold and I don't know what else to wear. I love the long sleeves with the thumb hole.. My only real complaint would be that the grey version seems to be a little lighter weight than the black and does not look as nice to wear other than for exercise. I would really like to see these in other solid colors - something neutral - like loden green, dark purple, a dark heather grey, or even a cream color. I would definitely buy this in other colors to wear for exercise and dog-walking as well as for just wearing around instead of a light-weight fleece.

Have one from 5 years ago and loved it, ordered this year and fabric seems thinner and scratchier. Tolerable but don't enjoy wearing like before.

Very nice quality. Fits well. Length is just below waist, a tad longer in the back. Sleeves are great and have thumb holes to keep in place.
Washed well, hung to dry.
I will be getting a crew neck version as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Ride4TheBrand Excellent product!
Attractive, warm & very comfortable for all-day wear as baselayer or alone. No odor or itch---ever.
True to size, it washes well & retains its shape even after repeated washings.
Ample sleeve length provides good hand coverage.
Beautiful in black, but other color choices would be welcomed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by fred1234 Not a base layer
This shirt is more like a light sweater or midlayer. The fabric is a nice "next to skin" merino. (I'm a knitter, I know from merino.) It's not remotely itchy. That is ruined by the seams. Structurally, most of them are flat, but are sown with a course, rough thread. There is one long seam on each side that is not flat, but particularly irritating. I tried to turn the shirt inside out, but the placket for the zipper makes that look awful.
Luckily for me, I didn't intend to use it as a real base layer, but will always have one of my Rambouillet wool undershirts on under it. Still, the seams are a bit annoying for the first few minutes. However, the fabric is nice, and the fit is good. At this price, I will keep it for a light sweater.

I was so excited about this product, because I have the expedition weight shirts in 2 colors and love them! Unfortunately, when I tried this shirt on, it was super itchy! I was weary about the wool, but other reviews were great, so I thought it would be fine. I'm sorry to say that it would only work in a larger size as an outer layer, but would probably still be itchy around the neck.
