I love my new barn coat! I ordered the red color and it is great. I first ordered a medium and it was a little snug in my shoulders. I returned it and ordered a large. It is perfect. I can wear layers and bulky sweaters under it and still feel like I can move around in it. It will be my every day jacket for running errands, buying groceries, etc. I love the pockets for my keys and lists. I am really happy w/my new barn coat.

L.L. Adirondack Barn Coats have been a mainstay of my wardrobe for many years, but this latest version is far inferior to the three other L.L. Bean barn jackets that I have. I purchased one to replace one I had for many years that was torn at the dog park.
The fit of this current item is all wrong; too boxy and the button down pockets are not practical if one uses the jacket for activities like hiking or dog walking.
In addition, the slit pocket it far too shallow, much less deep than in previous reincarnations of this jacket.
In the past there were three versions of the jacket, a flannel lined, a heavier version, and a lighter version. I particularly liked that I had one for each season, but now the lighter version in no longer offered, another disappointment.
I will not be purchasing another of these jackets anytime soon, even though I'd like to replace my "aging" ones.
It is beyond me why Bean decided to tamper with perfection!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Nana61 My favorite winter jacket
This has become my favorite winter jacket! It fits well and looks good for most of my needs. I've worn it to exercise class, church, out to dinner with the girls and to the city for a theater matinee. Can't get more versatile than that!
The handwarmer pockets are great. I'll have to get another one in a different color next year, so please don't stop selling them!

I have an older barn jacket that has a fit for working outside. This one - a princess fit - is just odd. The shoulders are huge yet the more fitted style across the back is like a straight jacket. I wish I had sent it back as it sits unused in my closet. Call it something other than a barn jacket because you won't be using this one if you want to do more than look like a stylish linebacker.

Rated 5 out of 5 by livesinthehaight Very nice looking coat, and practical, too
I bought the small loden colored coat and it fits perfectly. (I normally wear medium sized coats.) It is a smidgen boxy, but not enough to complain about. If I could add any improvements, it would be to have an inside pocket, and to have the upper pockets just a little bigger. The coat has a nice feel, and oh, is MILES better looking than the junk I see in stores! And believe me, I went all over looking for a jacket like this. It would also be nice if it came in brown, but the loden color is very pretty. I also ordered the blue one. The coat is well constructed and looks like it will last a good long time. And I love it that it has pockets!

After reading many reviews, I found I should order a smaller size than I normally do. The reviews were right, a size smaller than usual was just fine for me. Just wish the flannel-lining was removable, as it was on my previous field coat.

Princess seams on a barn coat? Really? You can't move in this jacket, even driving pulls the shoulders and back tight. The button pockets are too shallow to be useful and the lining isn't truly flannel, just a cotton print for looks. Very disappointed.

Rated 2 out of 5 by BloomsburgShopper Disappointing compared to old style.
I've worn L.L.Bean barn coats for over 25 years and have always loved them, but I can't say that anymore. I wear mine for outdoor work and play so like the roomy fit. The new style is much less comfortable. I ordered a red in medium and a stone in large, since I didn't know which size would fit best in the new style. I thought I would get used to the new style but it feels more like the fit of my dress coats. The medium fits nicely but isn't roomy enough to work outside comfortably. The large is too big to look nice if I want to wear it away from home. I hope L.L.Bean decides to go back to the old style.

Rated 3 out of 5 by RobinMac Good looking, but light
I received my new Adirondack Barn Coat today. I followed other reviewers' recommendations and ordered down a size from my usual and it fits fine. I am disappointed that it is a bit light weight - the flannel is very thin and won't provide much warmth at all. I've worn a barn coat from another company for years and was replacing it as it was starting to wear on the cuffs. It was a heavier fabric and the hand pockets were larger and deeper and I have worn it late into the fall and early winter if not too cold. It is much too cold now to wear this coat, but I am looking forward to trying it out in the spring. The elderberry colour is very nice and I got it on sale which is an added bonus.

Rated 3 out of 5 by grandmatina Boxy fit
I actually have a barn coat from LL Bean that I purchased at least 6 or 7 years ago. I am still wearing it, it has a quilted lining and is very warm. What I dislike about it is the fit. It is made more like a coat for a man, wider across the shoulders and narrower over the hip. Very boxy. It doesn't have the sewn in belt in the back. It meets my needs for cold weather but I sure dislike the fit. I was considering buying a new one but once I read reviews about size, I changed my mind. And there are not any other choices that are comparable.
Thanks.
