Rated 4 out of 5 by Sonnyboy2 Sleeve Length
I have five (5) of these very warm, well constructed sweaters.
However, in all five I have found the sleeves to be far too long.
And I mean LONG. My personal fix has been to carefully shrink the lower sleeves. Alas, I ruined the last one by shrinking one time too
many ! In my case sleeve length has always been a problem with
ALL LLBean clothes size small. If my arms were the length of the
sleeves I would look like an ape.....I mean it. Get past the sleeve length and they are terrific.

I purchased one of these sweaters in the Donegal light grey back in September and it's become my favorite sweater. It looks great with jeans on a weekend, but I also wear it to the office with khakis. The wool is soft and while I usually wear it over a long sleeve shirt, it's one of the few wool sweaters I own that I'd be willing to wear over short sleeves. The grey is flecked with brown, tan, black and white spots which add a lot of character and I always get compliments when I wear it.
To answer the common complaints about sleeve length and odor: the sweater fits me great, but its comparable to the long length sweaters I've purchased from L.L. Bean, so it may not work for a shorter person. The sleeves hit right at the base of my thumb, which is fine with me, and there's plenty of room.
As far as odor, well, it's a wool sweater. It did have a stronger odor out of the package, but I washed it once and don't notice anything different from any other wool sweater now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by SupremelySatisfied Just what I was looking for.
I moved from LA to Olympia, WA. this past January and I needed to find a warm wool sweater. All I could find in LA, needless to say, were cotton sweaters. I found this Irish wool sweater at LL Bean and it fits perfectly and is exactly what I was looking for. So warm and comfortable. I have been shopping at Bean off-and-on for years and I have never been dissatisfied with the style or usability, or performance of the merchandise. I always have complete confidence in shopping at Bean.Ol

Rated 5 out of 5 by JVS45 Very warm & comfortable
This sweater is very warm and comfortable and soft. Was recently wearing it under my Baxter state parka in-22* and they both kept me warm. It's a little pricey but made well this is my second one in fifteen years so they do last..

Rated 2 out of 5 by austinpowers Sweater needs to be knit "tighter" closer together
Cut and styling very attractive but the sweater is too "streatchy." It needs to be more tightly woven. Also the dark blue yarn has lighter blue flecks in it which look like pills on the sweater. I found my large to be more extra large. Great price, otherwise.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Davidbean better then its picture
The on-line photo does not do this sweater justice. The color is more of a speckled grey then a solid. The sweater has a loose weave so it will not cook you, but it will keep you warm in chilly weather.

I'm 5' 10" and 160 lbs. The medium was much too large for me so it was returned. The quality of the sweater seemed good and yes is smelled but that's what you get with untreated wool. I ordered a small as soon as it was in stock.

I ordered this sweater knowing that it might be thicker than I typically like. It was. Still it is a beautiful garment but I found it not full enough in the shoulders and chest in the large size. I did not want to exchange for an extra large as I felt that would be too full in the body. I do love the style especially the mock neck with buttons; very classy. The cable knit, while giving it a nice textured look, was a little too textured to my liking. This is the traditional style for the Irish knits and it really is beautifully done. One negative I felt was it was a little too loose in the ribbing around the waste. Again, I attribute that to its unique styling.

Classic, heavy wool sweater. Great present for the dads/brothers/husbands in your life. It's not cheap but the quality is excellent!

After stealing my boyfriends Rag Wool Classic Henley Sweater, I began to think that I could pull off some of the other men's sweaters as I can't find a women's sweater from L.L Bean that's enough, well, sweatery, but I do like Bean's quality. I ordered the white fisherman's sweater in a "s" size and was pleased with the result. I normally wear a small or x-small size top; I am 5'4 size 2 and 115. The color of the sweater is more on the off white/natural side than a true white, but this just means that it matches more of a range of color tones. The look of the sweater is very well-made and I have received several compliments already. My concern with this sweater was that it would be too large for us petite sizes. While the overall appearance would be called "chunky," it is not to the point where it looks off, or just plain comical. The sleeves are slightly longer but when they bother me I cuff them for a quick fix. The fit across the shoulders is generous (for a petite size). I can comfortably wear a light zip-up fleece under this bad boy without my movement being restricted. The material of the sweater is scratchy; I always wear a crew-neck long-sleeve shirt under it. The sweater, however, can be worn comfortably under a normal-fitting winter jacket. The sweater falls down to several inches below my hip, but is not excessively "baggy." Sometimes i flip the bottom hem of the sweater "under,' and it works as a quick sizing fix. All of the fit details being said, this sweater is perfect if you have to spend long periods of time in cold libraries, your friends's barely-heated apartment, a basement office...basically anyplace that is cold and slightly damp. When I wear the sweater I feel super super cozy...like being wrapped in a blanket AND getting a hug from Betty White at the same time!! For petite sizes, the "chunky" appearance of this sweater goes best with a non-loose pair of pants; I like to wear it with a pair of boot-cut jeans and low-profile sneakers, or leggings/skinny jeans and boots. When I initally opened the packaging containing the sweater, there was detectable odor....called lanolin. Lanolin is produced by sheep as a kind of protective coating for their wool. I thought this was pretty awesome as it meant that my sweater really was made of wool. It also meant that the wool from my sweater wasn't over-processed, something that also makes me pleased. Overall: I would recommend the purchase of this sweater, and would hope in the future that Bean would make this in an "xs" size...would buy more!
