I started out last year looking for a good moderate quality mountain bike. I am by no means an expert biker, but I go once or twice a month on the local trails. A few times a year I take my bike with me to get to my far away destinations on the trout streams. I bought the first updated model from a big box store and the first time I rode it, I bent the gears all up. Junk, so I returned it. They hassled me of course. But the assembler told me it was ready to go and they knew it was their mistake? The second, I ordered through the mail. It was a great deal because the shipping was free and the internet price was so much lower than the local bike shop. I learned quick that unless you know what you are doing, these things are a technical nightmare. They need to be tuned initially, like any quality bike. I sold it to the local bike shop as a used model and lost my rear. But I was so frustrated with the gears and brakes. Finally I ended up at the L.L. Bean store in Pittsburgh, Pa. What a blessing. The guy that worked the counter really knew bikes. They fitted me to the right frame, set the bike up and even gave me a chance to take it out and ride it before I bought it. It was amazing, but I put on a helmet and off I went. It's so much smoother and nicer that any of the others. Plus, Bean will tune it for you after you have put some miles on it and recheck everything at no cost! I have had this bike for a while now. Long enough to tell you that it is very tough and will take moderate to heavy terrain with no issues. The tires are not as aggressive as you would find on other models but they work well on the street and dirt. Not a possibility with heavier lugs. It is light weight and built very solid. If you enjoy mountain biking, you should enjoy this bike. Just understand that you need to have a professional get this thing tuned up for you if you plan to really ride it. After that, it will function great! Save yourself the time and money I lost and get a good, quality product. It's worth the price. I ride twice as much now and with ten times the peace of mind knowing that I have the "Legendary Guarantee" backing me up.

I bought this bike thinking it would be like a basic bike. But I was way wrong!!! The ride is extremely smooth. The front shocks take big bumps away. You can't feel them. The gears change very smoothly. Most of the time, you find a gear combination that works for you. You don't have to be worried about running through an intersection- the disc brakes are very sensitive and stop you very fast. This is my favorite bike.

Unfortunately I can't recommend this product. A few years back I bought a bike from Beans that was made by K2 for my daughter & it was & still is a great buy. This bike by Schwinn was not up to Bean's excellent standards.
The 1st problem was the directions that came w/ the bike were of a "generic" type & as such, did me no good in trying to put it together. The instructions were for a standard pulley type brakes but the bike had disc brakes. The disc brakes made a rubbing sound when the wheels spun so after puzzling over it for some time & not having used them before, I called the technical support line. The 2 technicians I spoke to didn't know how to solve the problem. I ended up figuring it out myself & got it working OK on one of the wheels, but the other wheel had the same problem. This time however I couldn't fix it since the disc was out of true & either the wheel would rub or the brakes would need need to be squeezed all the ways to the handlebars to work.
I called customer service & to Bean's credit as they always do, they fully credited back my money & tried to make it right-which is why despite this rather sour experience, I still consider myself a loyal Bean customer.
Maybe Bean needs to go back to more K2s in their bike line.
