Rated 5 out of 5 by Matliff Excellent pack
I have owned this pack for over 10 years. As an avid day hiker, camper, and active full time fireman, I use this pack daily to carry anything that I could get to fit in it from large rocks to my 15lb dogs. Ive used it as a carry-on overnight bag for planes and a change of clothes on overnight hikes. I'm looking to replace it because all the heavy duty things i have transported through the years has caused the waterproof lining to deteriorate. One of the best features is the "shoe/boot" compartment on bottom. It keeps my dirty shoes away from my clean clothes. I am buying the same bag for replacement. just wish they still had it in hunter green

Rated 3 out of 5 Nice size, but inconvenient build
I've been using this backpack for a few weeks now and while I find it very spacious, it is hard to pack in a way that is convenient or ergonomic. The waist strap doesn't seem to fit me very well - it ends up around my stomach, even when the shoulder straps are as long as possible. I'm not all that tall (6 ft); the problem seems to come from the loose build of the pack, i.e. the pack won't stay flush with my back unless I jam something bulky like a sweatshirt in there. I added a makeshift sternum strap (velcro band), which seems to help a little. It's also hard to control where the weight lies inside because it is so spacious: unless you fill it up all the way, the weight shifts towards the front of the pack and all around, so it doesn't matter how you try to distribute things. Straps on the sides to compress the bag when less full would help.

This was purchased as a Father's Day gift for my brother-in-law--returning to college at 42. We are so proud of him and he wanted a nice pack that he could use to take on outings with his 2 young sons after he's done with his education. My sister was very impressed with the quality & heavy duty construction of it. We'll see how he likes it on his big day---I know he will love it. The red is a nice deep color.

Rated 3 out of 5 by saleshoppermom Inner bottom too thin or not secured well
Bought this backpack for HS freshman to replace another LLBean bookpack that had gotten a slice in fabric; lower compartment expected to be useful for sports gear. Unfortunately the inner bottom panel was too thin to hold up to all his textbooks and tore away from the wall. He cut it off but finds he doesn't need the capacity for sophomore year. Is useful for weekend campouts with scouts.

I have been buying my children's backpacks from LL Bean for many years. The only reason I replace them is because the kid's prefer different patterns after a few years. I would highly recommend the LL Bean packs to anyone looking for a no nonsense, well made pack.

Great bag and great LLBean service! Wanted a reliable backpack for travel as well as use on a college campus for laptop. It has multi-use capabilities and is well made.

Rated 5 out of 5 by MostlyHarmless GREAT, versatile, durable bag!
I have an earlier version of this bag. My wife has the current version. It is very durable - mine has many thousands of miles of travel and shows absolutely no signs of wear. It is very roomy - I have even used it as the only luggage for two to three day business-casual trips and it holds everything I need. Lots of pockets make it easy to organize. Even when fully packed, it still slides under all airline seats. Very highly recommended!

Needed a backpack to use as a carryon for plane trips. This backpack serves the purpose very well. With multiple zippered sections I am able to divide my carryon items into certain categories (electronics, reading material, clothing, etc.)that make it easier to access when needed. The straps are very comfortable and don't irritate the shoulders.
