I bought this bag as a travel companion to hold my iPad, eReader, and other gear/snacks for travel or running errands. It does a nice job of that with room to spare! The bag strap also adjusted to my larger frame and I can carry it cross-body too. There is a nice zip pocket on the front flap that is great for stashing your phone so you can get to it fast. The inner zip pocket is good for items you'd normally take in a purse/wallet. There is a back zipper that accesses the laptop storage area without having to undo the front flap buckles also. The quality and material of the bag are nice and the bag, even when fully packed, is balanced load-wise. The buckles are sturdy and you are able to release each with one hand quickly. This bag is a great value for the money and will be used for many years to come!

I like it very much. It's heavy,but easy to carry, and has enough room for all the things I have to take to work: lunch, water cup, paper work, and sundries. I can even tuck my jacket in it.

I use this bag every day to carry my change of clothes, towel and toiletries when I go the yoga studio. The bag holds all my essentials without being bulky or heavy. The bag is canvas so, of course, it is heavier than a nylon messenger bag. However, it does not hurt the neck if it is carried across the body.
I have received many, many compliments on this bag. I love the clasps, they seemed rugged and sturdy. I look forward to many, many years of use from this bag. Thank you LL Bean for making this!

This is a very useful, cool bag. I use it to tote my Macbook Pro around and recently traveled with it as well. It's incredibly roomy and well constructed. Looks great, too.

The reviewers who were surprised with how big this is were right! Laying flat, it measures 18 " on the bottom, 20" on top, and 15" tall! It is such a nice bag but not what I'm looking for. Maybe if I were a student. It is very heavy but that might not be bad across the back. Unfortunately the small version of this really barely holds a book and not really a water bottle.

My daughter who attends middle school uses this bag daily. With her workload she needed something to carry all her books, binders and other girl-stuff to and from school. Having been through several school backpacks, cheap messenger bags the traditional school bags, nothing lasted past a few months.
After watching rather large two boys taking turns carrying each other around with this bag, I knew I found a school bag for my daughter. I bought one for my daughter two years ago and it has lasted vastly better than anything else I had bought. It is easy to clean, ages beautifully and works great at carrying all my daughter's school work. The metal parts are strong and do not bend or twist like other products would.
Now the downside, the shoulder strap could use a little more padding on the pad part. While the strap is very strong, it tends to cut into her neck area.
I highly recommend this bag if you need a bag with a LOT of space and can handle just about anything you can throw at it. While it was very pricey for me, it is worth every cent!

Survivorman26 Great Bag
I bought this bag for a twelve day tour of Israel and Jordan, and it worked great. It's big enough to hold everything I needed for the day plus stuff I didn't need. The material is tough and holds up, and the way the bag is designed it keeps your belongings safe from pick pockets.
The only down side is that the laptop sleeve is too small for the average laptop. It doesn't bother me because I didn't buy it to carry a laptop in.
Overall great bag, easy to carry, and it looks great.

I use this bag frequently, but have found it is most helpful as a carry-on for flights. The easy access to the back pocket (ipad) for movies is awesome and the ear buds nicely tucked in the flap pocket. The main compartment is great for a couple books, the paper and even a sweatshirt. I cannot recommend this bag highly enough!

We purchased this bag as a gift for our son and he really likes it! It is very roomy, with a casually rugged style. Great bag for students, over night stays, city travelers around town. Very reasonably priced too, compared with similar competitors' bags.
For variety, we bought the unisex Sea-Washed canvas "guide bag" as well - one for me, and one for our son - which is equally versatile, although a more compact style and size.
