Rated 3 out of 5 by Montani Sweater opens at seams in the under arms.
My wife bought me one of these sweaters for Christmas a couple years ago. In a few months of wear the seams in the under arms failed and there were holes there. I contacted LL Bean and they replaced the sweater with me paying the difference between their current price and the sale price my wife bought it for. Now the replacement sweater has failed at the same places, under the arms. I am not heavy and I do not exercise in the sweater. I only wear it in my home in the evening. I love the weight and feel of the sweater, but it should not fail with the gentle wear I give it.

My wife ordered this for me. The lambswool sweater sheds. I've laundered it twice and it still leaves small black wool "lint" on my white shirt. It also drops them into the white sink when washing my hands or flossing my teeth. Abby stated that she was concerned if I spent the $6.50 to exchange it, the new one might shred as well.

CONS: I ordered the "Deepwater Blue," thinking it was like the denim color shown on the website, but it's actually a deep teal. Not an attractive hue.
The ribs at the hem of the sweater (ordered XL) kinda stand out instead of fitting close to the body. Looks odd.
The buttonholes are very very tight.
PLUS: Wool is soft.

I have read some negative reviews related to sizing and thickness/weight and feel the need to give others insight into these matters.
I purchased a medium and wore it with my medium Beans' Chino shirt, that shirt fits the same as other medium Beans shirts I own. The sweater is a comfortable fit over that shirt, but, I do not have a belly and I am 5'7" with a medium shoulder width. I would think taller men would consider the cardigan a bit short. The sweater is not a loose fit over the shirt so I could see where someone may consider the sweater smaller than they'd like. My suggestion buy up a size if in doubt.
The weight is medium and the weave is dense. It is a bit heavier than the typical cashmere sweater of today. It is a smooth lambswool. I would consider this an appropriate weight, after all it's not supposed to be an Irish Fishing sweater.

Very impressed with this sweater. Ordered the deep loden and the color is perfect and goes with several of my other Bean shirts (long and short sleeve). The wool is soft not scratchy to skin and size was spot on. Really like the buttons they give a added panche over just regular plastic ones. Added perk is washable not dry clean!!!

I ordered this as a Christmas gift and he loves it. I ordered it in the Russet color, in a Large Tall. It fits him perfectly and looks great & handsome! I assume it's also warm, as he'll go out in it alone without a coat. The russet color is beautiful and soft to cuddle against. I would definitely recommend it and purchase it again if I could.

I received this item as a gift sometime last year and have used it several times. It kept me very warm for layering during a recent trip to Europe.
As a quality comparison note, I found two LL Bean cardigans of the same type from years ago. From the other items in the box, they must be close to 10 years old. Both were marked Made in Scotland. When I compared the old and the new, the only defect from the new is rather small button holes so its hard to button and unbutton.
Frankly I would prefer to have simple matched buttons rather than the thick basket weave but then I can always change them.

Somewhat lightweight yet the tight weave creates a surprisingly warm cardigan that's greatly cozy and soft. I'm 6' 5", 234 pounds. The "tall" sweater fits as though perfectly tailored for me.
Seams are smooth and sturdy. The button holes are properly sized for the very attractive, seeming leather, buttons (extra one furnished.) The two pockets in front are nicely ample and return to flat if stretched, say, all day. The russet color is rich and attracts regular compliments. Simply, I couldn't be more pleasantly satisfied with my fine lambswool cardigan.

This knit is very thin. Advertised as "English" wool, English it may be, but quality it is not.
