I wish it had more metal parts, especially the base. It is mostly plastic. The switch seems to be rather cheap, and feels as if it could fail easily. Otherwise, it does provide adequate light for the intended purpose. It is light in weight, and a metal base may also make it more stable.

My wife ordered this for me for Christmas in November, then we received a post card to say it would be delivered the first week of February so she was going to give it to me for Valentine's Day. Well we received a notice that it would be shipped on February 15th, so now it is a Happy Easter present.
Love the lantern but the high doesn't seem brighter than the low. We were out lights in January but it didn't come in time for the first blackout. We did try it and we liked the fact that it will be really handy in the next blackout. Batteries were easy to install and loved the life time LED light in it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by fantabulous interchangeable batteries
First off, I have just received the lantern and have not yet had an opportunity to use it. I also ordered, separately, the rechargeable battery which I feel will be the most economical. At this point, I would recommend that Coleman offer these two items together and leave the option to the purchaser which to use. The recharger allows one to permanently have it at full capacity as opposed to hoping the batteries still have life in them. Also, the rechargeable battery provides two options for recharging, one electrical plug-in cord and another for the car, which is an excellent option. This seemed, to me, to be an excellent, common sense item to have in the arsenal of emergency preparedness and also when light is needed for camping and such. I have a feeling I will be giving these as gifts. So far, my rating of 4 stars was due to my not having used it yet and the fact that the rechargeable battery has to be purchased separately.

Rated 5 out of 5 by RCaffyn Plenty of light!
Small but mighty, fits this Coleman product. Heavy plastic construction. Battery pack is easily changed. Switch is simple enough. Overall it appears to be well made. Enough light for a large room(would like it a bit brighter). I purchased this lamp and its 6 volt rechargeable battery, partly because of hurricane Sandy. I live in a waterfront community and outages are frequent. Haven't tested the longevity of the battery charge. All in all, I think I may buy one or two more of these. Better to be prepared than not.

Rated 3 out of 5 by LanternUser Somewhat disappointed
Just received the unit. I expected a larger unit but didn't carefully read the site. Not quite up to Coleman standards. Putting batteries in was a little troublesome and took several trial and error tries. Battery case design is poor. Low and high settings put out a similar amount of light (not the 190 and 100 lumens as stated). Reviews say it is good for reading. I am not sure I believe that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Connie56 Great Lantern, Great Price
I just received my lantern,. I read the other reviews and was a little worried about putting in the batteries. I had NO problems at all getting the battery compartment open. Batteries went in easy and the lantern throws off amazing light on high and low. Very pleased with this lantern.

Rated 4 out of 5 by WestCostLLBeaner Very bight
As other reviewers have stated, even the low setting on the light is still very bright. That said it is still a great light and works very well for car camping or hiking into USFS cabins in Alaska. (We started putting a white t-shirt over the top of the light to diffuse it a bit and make it less bright). It worked great for making dinner (at the brighter setting) or playing cards (at the dimmer setting).
I bought the rechargeable battery pack for it and it defiantly makes the lantern much better (chargeable at a normal outlet or in the car!). I'm not sure how much I would like the lantern if I had to buy 4 batteries every time the lantern died.

Just echoing what others said about the battery pack. I can't open it and I'm not feeble. Terrible design. I have never been able to use this lantern or the batteries I bought for it. Really disappointing. Especially with the storms rolling through the Mid-Altantic lately.

One night as we were waiting for my brother and sister-in-law to come for dinner, the electricity went out. Thankfully, the dinner was cooked. We spent the next four hours eating and talking by candlelight. Candles frighten me. Shortly after, Bean's daily special was this wonderful lantern. I didn't know that such a great item existed.
At first we used the lantern with the batteries, until we discovered that you could buy a charger for it. (Actually you get two chargers -- one for the house and one for the car.)
We now have three of these great lanterns --one for the cellar to see in all the dark spots and corners, one for the main floor for emergencies and whenever we need extra light, and one for the car. The one for the car is for car emergencies and for travel. Last fall we were in a hotel and the lights went out and stayed out all night. I was sure glad that we had this lantern with us. As I write this, we are on vacation for a month. I am able to see the lantern on the kitchen table. We use it every night when we eat, since the light in that area of this hugh room is dim. Yesterday, we charged the battery for the first time in months.
I highly recommend this lantern and that you buy the charger for it. I am planning on buying both for at least one Christmas present.
