Rated 5 out of 5�by Yooper Lost O ring I lost the rubber O ring on the inside of the spool knob. I didn't want to return the spool because it would mean taking all the line off of it. I contacted Bean to see if I can get a replacement. I was happy to pay for one. After a phone call and two return calls, I came home to find a package at my door. Inside was a new O ring for my Shearwater #4, no charge. I installed it and now my reel is as good as new. Thank you LL Bean. One happy fly fisherman! March 8, 2013

Rated 1 out of 5�by Glenbow Reel Blew Up I took my new #5 Shearwater to the Florida Keys this April (2012) to fish for Tarpon for the first time. After a couple of days, I managed to finally hook my first Tarpon ever, estimated to be about 140 lbs by my guide. After about 20 minutes fighting this fish, the reel's drag began to get loud and jerky and at about the 30 minute mark it fell apart into many pieces. A number of pieces fell in the water never to be seen again. I had to fight this fish with the reel in the horizontal position and palm the drag so the spool wouldn't fall in the water. In the end I got the leader in the rod and broke the fish off when it went to run again and my palming was too tight. I was very disappointed that the reel actually came apart and failed catastrophically on it's first outing, and first fish. It might be an ok reel for small fish, but this is NOT a Tarpon reel and I would venture to say, not a salt water suitable reel either due to the drag failing. It is possible this example was just a bum reel but I suspect not. April 18, 2012

Rated 4 out of 5�by bmwtn Good value for the money Purchased and used #3 for a recent bone fishing trip with a 7 wt. line. It appears to be well made and it performed well. At first, the drag knob was quite rough and I almost sent it back. After playing with it, it loosened up and turned smoothly. I can't give it a five star rating because it doesn't carry an independent warranty. If fact, there wasn't any warranty info with the reel. I'm also a little concerned about reels that have defined stops on the drag. If the drag wears a bit, it probably would loose some of it's drag capacity as you can only tighten it so far. That said, it did a good job for bone fishing and the price is reasonable. March 1, 2011
