Rated 5 out of 5 by HarpWoman Quality merchandise service & guarentees! Win/win!
I am so impressed with my shopping experience with the L.L. Bean company that I am taking the time to shout it to the world!! I purchased two Carryall Rolling Gear Bags and a Deluxe Rolling Bookpack long ago. After years of use the telescoping handle from the bookpack no longer functioned properly and there was a tear in a top seam. One of the wheels from the Carryall Rolling Gear Bag no longer rolled properly and was flipping from side to side making it a hassle to use. I am a working musician and use these great bags for my gear. I called customer service. They sent me a return shipping label and are replacing both bags free of charge. They are courteous helpful polite and positive. They care about quality and customer relations. They are a pleasure to deal with and I highly recommend this company and their products to everyone. You can not loose, win/win! Rock On L. L. Bean. I should write a happy blues song for them! Octavia Blues

I'm a notorious overpacker so this year I promised my husband it was carry-on or nothing from now on. This bag was the beginning of this pledge. I did some research on the best way to pack for a week or longer with just a carry-on. After reading these reviews and a number of travel websites, I decided a rolling duffel, structured with packing cubes was my best bet. I got this bag in plum, which is a subtle, grown-up purple while still distinguishing my bag from the sea of black ones should I ever need to check it.
I bought this bag for a week-long trip to the lake as its first on-flight trip. It easily fit a week plus of summer clothing for a moderate climate (pants and shorts were needed# plus some workout wear and sneakers. And I overpacked. And it all fit. Granted I did some careful pruning and packing, but I had more than the necessary outfits, plus a light jacket, some stuff for evenings out and four #yes FOUR# pairs of shoes.
Since that trip this little bag has come with me to several marathons and can easily accommodate my serious race overpacking for all weather conditions, my day clothing plus extra running shoes. It doesn't fit into a "puddle hopper" size overhead, #I've been able to gate-check and still skip the fees# but fits easily in regular plane size overheads, even vertically. I love the side pocket which fits running caps, curling irons and extra sandals nicely. I also love the zip pocket at the top which allows me to take out my 311 bag quickly #buy the Sea to Summit one LL Bean sells!# and could store a passport or other necessary documents for an overseas trip.
I should add that I do supplement this bag with a commuter backpack or a large tote as a "personal item" if I need to pack my laptop or any serious reading material #I refuse to Kindle and give away books as I finish#. My only complaint about this bag is it can be rather unstable as you're rolling it, so make sure to keep weight distributed evenly through the bag for easier rolling. I don't think this would work well for a quick plane transfer, but there is a carrying strap for emergencies.
All and all I'm very pleased with this little bag. It's a great quality duffel I see lasting me for years in my new, carry-on only lifestyle. I feel it fits much more than my old, traditional style carry-on bag. My husband liked it so much he got one for himself after seeing how easy it was to pack light with this bag!

Will echo other reviews. Bought this item for my wife before a just completed European vacation. Have not heard her swear as much in a long time! Wheelbase is too narrow - it rolled over on just about anything other than a glass flat tiled floor. It does NOT fit in the overhead compartments on planes we traveled on. On the other hand, I traveled with a "Quick Load Upright Rolling Duffle" which had none of these problems. I'm trading in the carry-all for another Rolling Duffle.

The wheel base is too narrow to roll without falling over. I have tried putting heavy items near the wheels but it doesn't seem to help. My major issue is the bags zippers open too readily. If you grab the bag like by anything other then the handle it unzips and spills your things into the street. This happened everytime I tried to grab my bag out of the trunk of a taxi or off the luggage turnstile at the airport baggage claim. You do get to meet new people but not really a plus for a bag. Also it is quite sporty to see your shoe pass by on the bagge belt followed by your fully/partially opened bag. This bag would make a bishop kick a hole in a stained glass window.

Have used other LLB duffels with great success - like the room and particularly the sled bottom to protect them. They routinely go on two week foreign mission trips into remote country. Only disappointment on this model so far is lack of any compression straps. Like them to keep the bag tight and compact. Will buy a couple web straps and use them outside the bag. Not ideal 'cause it exposes them to wear where the cross the sled, but better than no straps.

We bought these because the web site stated they would work as carry-ons for airplane travel. Forget it. The size of the frame and the height of the bag mean they do not fit, when moderately full, in most airline overhead compartments. We had an embarrassing experience holding up the other passengers while we tried to stuff them in and then had to exit the plane and gate check them. Sending them back.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Schuymer Not quite what I wanted
Overall it's a decent bag and travelled well. My main problem is that it is actually a bit longer than advertised and doesn't quite meet the tight airline specs for carry-on luggage. It does fit in the overhead racks (sometimes sideways) but it poses the risk of having the airline demand that it be checked as luggage and that makes the boarding procedure more stressful.

Rated 2 out of 5 by forshara Pros and cons to this piece of luggage
I recently spent 4 months traveling through Europe with this piece of luggage. The pros are that it was very sturdy and durable over the many cobblestone roads that I traveled along. Also, it easily carried everything that I needed on this trip. The cons: the width made it difficult to navigate through the isles on a train. It was also very difficult to carry, when that was necessary. It would be most helpful to have a side strap that one could pick the luggage up with. The width made it difficult to carry by my side, especially going up narrow stairways in a bed and breakfast or getting on a train. It was very awkward to handle during those times. I was extremely frustrated throughout my trip and will not be using it again on future trips. A side strap would help greatly in navigating with this suitcase, especially when one has 45-50 pounds that they are trying to carry.

I purchased this carry on to go to Maine on vacation. It is NOT a carry on it does not fit in the over head . It cost me $50.00 as a checked bag. Does Not roll right handle twists and wobbles all over.
If I had known this I would never had purchased it
Bag also had damage on the bottom that I didn't see right away because I did not un package it until the day before we left for vacation .had to duck tape the hole.

I purchased this bag around a year ago for a Europe trip.
Leaving for Europe on Sunday and when I started to pack the handle is jammed and will not budge. Now it can't be used.
